Melissa McCarthy Reveals the Worst Part of ‘Gilmore Girls’
She doesn’t smell snow! Melissa McCarthy star up Gilmore Girls for seven seasons — but filming the beloved show wasn’t always an easy feat.
“Sometimes we were crammed into little things with jackets on, but it was actually like 112 degrees in Burbank, [California]. And we were like, ‘Brrr, Connecticut!’” McCarthy, 52, shared Weekly entertainment in an interview published on Monday, June 12. “And I was like, ‘Are we going to explain why I have malaria and why I’m all sweaty?’”
Gilmore Girlswhich aired on The WB (and later The CW) from 2000 to 2007, followed mother-daughter duo Lorelai (Lauren Graham) and Rory Gilmore (Alexis Bledel) as they navigated life in their quirky town of Stars Hollow, Connecticut. While the show was set up north, it filmed in sunny – and hot – California.
“When we made our first poster, someone passed out,” said the Little Mermaid star continued. “As usual [passed] cold because we were all in coats trying to look windy and we were just sweating in weird places and [they were] like, ‘Look cold!’”
McCarthy, for her part, portrayed chef Sookie St. James in the multi-generational drama – Lorelai’s best friend and business partner.
Although McCarthy starred in all seven seasons of the original series, fans speculated that the Emmy winner may not be returning for the 2016 Netflix revival after claiming she was not asked to reprise her role.
“Thanks for the invite, but unfortunately no one has asked me or Sookie to come back to Stars Hollow,” said the Mike & Molly alum wrote via Twitter in February 2016 after a fan asked her to “come back” to Stars Hollow. “Wish them all the best!!”
Gilmore Girls Creator Amy Sherman Palladinomeanwhile told TV line earlier that month she had contacted McCarthy’s team but had heard nothing.
“She’s really super busy. But what I said [to her team] is: ‘Look, if Melissa is available and has an afternoon off, I’ll write her a scene’ Wonderful Mrs. Maisel writer explained. “Melissa was one of us. If she has a spare moment to run about [to the set] — even if it was just for a cameo — we’d be totally wild,” she continued. “And if it happens at the last minute, I’ll sign her up and we’ll work it out. We left it that way.”
However, two months later the Boss star announced she would appear sometime in the four 90-minute episodes — and opened up Us weekly about the emotional experience of returning to the set after so many years.
“I went back and visited about two weeks ago and saw the sets again and everyone on it and it just felt – oh my god I’m getting so sentimental. It felt like the best idea in the world. It was simply delicious. It was just delicious,” she sobbed at the time. “There was the longest time when it just wasn’t going to work out, planning wise, and once we decided, like, ‘Is there a possible way?’ Something big happened to me [and] something has changed for them.”
While Sookie only made a brief appearance in the revival’s “Fall” episode — the last of the four episodes — to help Lorelai and Luke’s (Scott Patterson) wedding cake, McCarthy gave an update Monday on where she thinks her character would be today.
“She has about 42 children. I think they grow weed. I think her and [her husband] Jackson, [portrayed by Jackson Douglas] – she still cooks, but I think [they do] edibles,” she joked to EW. “I think they run a really nice little mom-and-pop business with their 13 kids and she makes delicious edibles.”
