Moana and Maui returns to theaters later this year and is expected to make a big splash.
Disney announced on Wednesday, February 7, that the lovable duo, along with a new crew of unlikely seafarers, will return to the big screen for another grand adventure in Moana 2which will be released in theaters on Monday, November 27.
Disney's CEO, Bob Iger, revealed that the sequel's script was actually originally intended for TV, but everything changed after everyone saw it. “We were impressed with what we saw and knew it deserved a theatrical release,” Iger revealed on CNBC on Wednesday, per Variety. “Moana continues to be an incredibly popular franchise, and we can't wait to bring you more of Moana and Maui Moana 2 hits theaters in November.”
This time Moana (Auli'i Cravalho) goes on an epic journey with her friends to the distant seas of Oceania after she receives an unexpected call from her agile ancestors. Along the way, they encounter dangerous, long-lost waters unlike anything they have ever experienced before.
In addition to the film's synopsis, Disney has released another surprise: a first teaser trailer. In it, viewers get a glimpse of an island, where Moana stands on a beautiful tropical beach. Just as the sun sets, she blows a conch as the camera quickly pans out to reveal her beloved boat. Then Maui's (Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson) voice can be heard in the background belting out his signature call: “Cheerhoo!”
The sequel is directed by Dave Derrick Jr. and feature some of the same songwriters from the 2016 film. However, while Lin-Manuel Miranda was behind some of the original film's biggest songs, including “How Far I'll Go” and “You're Welcome,” he is not expected to return for part two. Instead, the duo of Abigail Barlow And Emily Bearlike Opetaia Foa'i And Mark Mancinawho worked on the first film will write the music.
In addition to getting an animated film, you can still expect the live-action Moanastarring Johnson, 51, set for release in 2025.
Moana 2 can be seen in cinemas from Monday 27 November.
