Ahmedabad: At least nine people have died in rain-related incidents in the past two days, as heavy monsoon rains continued to ravage various parts of Gujarat over the past 24 hours, inundating low-lying areas in towns and villages and causing flooding. such as the situation in the affected areas, officials said Saturday.
A PTI report quoted officials as saying that the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have been deployed in Kutch, Jamnagar, Junagadh and Navsari, some of the hardest hit districts.
According to officials, areas in many districts in Saurashtra-Kutch and South Gujarat regions experienced extremely heavy rainfall, flooding low-lying areas and inundating villages.
Several areas in the city of Ahmedabad were also flooded, leading to heavy traffic congestion and inconvenience to commuters, they said.
Gandhidham railway station in Kutch was flooded as the district received very heavy rains, while several towns and cities in Junagadh, Jamnagar, Kutch, Valsad, Navsari, Mehsana and Surat were flooded, officials said.
According to the State Emergency Operation Center (SEOC), Visavadar taluka in Junagadh district received extremely heavy rainfall of 398 mm in a 24-hour period ending at 6 am on Saturday.
The SEOC said nine people have died in rain-related incidents in the past two days.
Jamnagar taluka of Jamnagar district (269mm), Kaprada in Valsad (247mm), Anjar in Kutch (239mm) and Khergam in Navsari (222mm) were some of the hardest hit areas, according to the SEOC.
On Friday evening, Prime Minister Bhupendra Patel held an emergency meeting with SEOC officials in Gandhinagar and directed them to focus on rescue and relief efforts, including evacuating people living in low-lying areas.
Patel spoke to collectors from Junagadh and Kutch districts, who briefed him on the rain situation, including flooding in villages in Visavadar taluka, and evacuation of people along with other relief measures, a government statement said.

Monsoon chaos
Heavy rains have ravaged Gujarat since the monsoon arrived in the state on June 27, causing flooding in several areas.
Images shared on social media platforms showed a flood-like situation in many parts of the state due to flooding caused by the heavy downpour.

Another video shows flooding in Junagadh due to an overflowing dam caused by the downpour.
India’s Meteorological Department has forecast that the intensity of rainfall in the state will ease on Saturday and the situation will begin to normalize by Sunday.

However, the department warned of heavy rains in isolated places in northern and southern Gujarat and Saurashtra districts until Sunday morning.
The IMD also said there will be light to moderate rainfall in several parts of the state through Wednesday morning.
