Delhi News: Who invented Butter Chicken and Dal Makhani? The question has been referred to the Delhi High Court for adjudication, with restaurant chain Moti Mahal suing renowned eatery Daryaganj for claiming credit for the two world-famous dishes.

The owners of Moti Mahal have claimed in court that it was their predecessor Late Kundal Lal Gujral who invented Butter Chicken and Dal Makhani, and restaurant chain Daryaganj is “misleading people into believing” that their predecessor was the inventor of the two dishes.

Prosecutors have charged the owners of Daryaganj restaurants alleging a relationship between Daryaganj restaurants and Moti Mahal, whose first branch was opened in Daryaganj area of old Delhi.

The owners of Moti Mahal have tried to dissuade the owners of Daryaganj restaurants from claiming that their predecessor Late Kundan Lal Jaggi was the inventor of these two dishes, which are now world famous, and the slogan 'by the inventors of butter chicken and dal makhani ' to use. on its website www.daryaganj.com and various social media websites, including Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and Twitter, and in print and electronic media.

Justice Sanjeev Narula recently issued summons to the owners of Daryaganj restaurants asking them to file a written statement in response to the suit along with an affidavit of admission or denial of documents of the plaintiffs.

The court listed the case for further hearing on May 29.

For years, the two restaurant chains have claimed that they invented Butter Chicken and Dal Makhani.

In their lawsuit, the owners of Moti Mahal have alleged that their predecessor Gujral created the first Tandoori Chicken and later created Butter Chicken and Dal Makhani and brought them to India after Partition.

They claim that previously, the unsold chicken leftovers could not be stored in the refrigerator and Gujral became concerned about his cooked chicken drying out. So he invented a sauce with which he could rehydrate them.

His invention was 'the makhani' or butter sauce (a gravy with tomatoes, butter, cream and some spices) which is now said to give the dish a spicy and delicious taste.

“The invention of Dal Makhani is closely linked to the invention of Butter Chicken. He (Gujral) applied the same recipe with black lentils and gave birth to Dal Makhani around the same time,” Moti Mahal said in his lawsuit.

During the hearing on Tuesday, counsel for the Daryaganj restaurants vehemently opposed the claims, arguing that the suit was misconceived, without merit and without a cause of action.

Counsel argued that the defendants have not made any false statements or claims, and that the allegations in the lawsuit are far from the truth.

Regarding a photo of the Moti Mahal restaurant in Peshawar, counsel for the defendants said that it was jointly established by predecessors of both parties (Moti Mahal's Gujral and Daryaganj's Jaggi), thereby eliminating any claims of exclusive rights to the image made by the plaintiffs could claim, be declared invalid. .
