Mumbai announces a public holiday today on ‘Mahaparinirvan Din’, see what’s open and what’s closed

New Delhi: Today, December 6, 2023, is marked as Mahaparinirvan Din as it is the death anniversary of Dalit leader and architect of the Constitution of India, Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar. Thanks to Mahaparinirvan Din, the government of Mumbai has declared a public holiday in the city. An official circular has also been issued for this. Public holiday in Mumbai, see what is open and what is closed

As mentioned earlier, a public holiday has been declared in Mumbai to mark the death anniversary of Dr BR Ambedkar, who is also known as the Mahaparinirvan Din. On this holiday, all educational institutions i.e. both schools and colleges remain closed today in Mumbai city and its suburbs; In addition to the educational institutions, the offices also remain closed. The circular states that this notice is applicable to both government and non-government offices in the suburbs and Mumbai city.

Mahaparinirvan Din: local holiday in Mumbai from 2023

As of 2023, Mahaparinirvan Din has been added to the city’s list of local holidays; this comes after a request to Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde by Varsha Gaikwad, MLA and president of Mumbai Regional Congress Committee. The circular also mentions that Anant Chaturdashi and Dahi Handi were declared local holidays for Mumbai city and its suburbs in 1996 and 2007 respectively.

Traffic restrictions in Noida on Mahaparinirvan Din

Gautam Budh Nagar police have issued a traffic advisory on account of ‘Mahaparinirvan Diwas’, the death anniversary of Dr BR Ambedkar. An HT report quoted Anil Kumar Yadav, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic, as saying: “In case of traffic congestion at Dalit Prerna Sthal on Greater Noida to Noida route, on Noida-Greater Noida Expressway, traffic will be diverted from Mahamaya flyover towards Sector 37. The vehicle coming that way will be able to reach the destination from Sector 37 to Attapir Chowk, Rajnigandha Chowk and Sector 15 Golchakkar Chowk. The diversions include –

  • If there is congestion at Dalit Prerna Sthal Gate No. 4, traffic from Sector 18 will be diverted to Rajnigandha Chowk, Sector 15 Golchakkar Chown or Sector 18 Underpass.
  • Incoming traffic from the DND Flyway and Film City Flyover will be diverted from the Sector 14A Flyover to the Sector 15 roundabout. Traffic will continue to move from Sector 15 Golchakkar Chowk via Rajnigandha Chowk, Attapir Chowk and Sector 37.
