In an interview with Marie Claire AustraliaThe Impossible star revealed she tried to get pregnant at the age of 36 when tests showed she was approaching menopause.

“I almost fell off my chair,” she recalls.

'I'm being told I'm close to menopause, even though I'm just feeling ready to get pregnant. How can those things live together at the same time?'

“The average age for menopause is 51 and I was much earlier than that,” she added. 'No one wants to feel less than average, so I withdrew very quickly and that left me feeling very lonely and very scared.

“And especially being in the industry that I'm in, it felt like a big secret to live with. The shame was great.'

Naomi and her ex-husband Liev Schreiber eventually became pregnant naturally and welcomed their first child, Sasha, now 16, in July 2007 – when Naomi was 39.

In 2008, they welcomed their second child, Kai, who is now 15.

Naomi previously spoke about her experience with menopause on Instagram, saying that at the time no one wanted to talk about it because there was such a stigma.

'In my late thirties, I was finally ready to think about starting a family. Then the M word quickly blew my doors down, it felt like a head-on collision with a Mack truck,” she explained.

'How could I think of this when no one was talking? I was doing it before my peers. My mentors and mother seemed unable to talk about it, I didn't know how to ask for help and they didn't know how to provide…. even doctors had little say. Strangely enough, it seems like an unwritten code of silence: women have to suck it up and deal with it, because that's how generations have done it.'

“Let's overcome the stigma and address the secrecy and shame we've felt and help create a healthier foundation for future generations.

“Becoming a parent is a privilege and a time for us to take pride in our cumulative experiences – to feel unapologetic and unapologetic. I'm excited to be part of a generation of changemakers. You don't have to walk through this alone anymore.'

Naomi, who recently married actor Billy Crudup, previously told The Sunday Times: 'Menopause shouldn't be a dirty word.

'It's such a shame that society has made it this way. We need each other's support, and not to be made to feel sexy, sterile, bad-tempered, and out to pasture.”

She added: “We actually have wisdom and compassion that far outweighs youthful arrogance. Along with some mood swings and floods of tears.'
