Nora Batty-style tights are flying off the shelves as Brits snap them on to keep warm

HILLING Brits are stocking up on Nora Batty-style granny tights to keep warm.

The thickest leg warmers flew off the shelves during last month's cold wave.

As energy bills skyrocket due to the cost of living crisis, it's no fun looking like the terrifying Nora from the BBC sitcom Last of the Summer Wine.

Retailers say sales of 300 denier pantyhose are up 50 percent compared to early 2023.

Anything above 70 denier is generally considered thermal, and 200s also sell well.

Tights owner Allana Loftus, 29, said: “I've seen people wearing them under trousers – they can also be worn as loungewear.

“For people who can't afford to turn on the heating, they are a good alternative because they are warm and cozy.”

She added that some trendy leg warmers are also sheer “so it doesn't look like you're wearing super thick granny pantyhose.”

Britain's most famous thick panty wearer was the character Nora Batty from Last Of The Summer Wine, which ran for 37 years, with the final episode airing in 2010.

Set in the chilly West Yorkshire village of Holmfirth, it followed the antics of Compo, Clegg and Foggy, three down-on-his-luck elderly men and their attempts to find something to do.

Much of the humor came from the interplay between Compo and Nora Batty, played by actress Kathy Staff, and her penchant for wearing thick, rumpled tights.

Allana, from Cramlington, Northumberland, adds: “Tights are also a good option if you can't afford to buy a whole new outfit at the moment. You can purchase a polka dot style that will give a whole new look to your current clothes. “
