A body has been found on a property and a major police operation is underway against several gunmen after gunshots were fired at cars traveling along a major highway.

The incident is said to have occurred on the Pacific Highway on the NSW north coast after several shots were fired in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Four separate incidents of gunfire were reported between 1:40 a.m. and 5:40 a.m. at multiple locations on the Manning Great Lakes and near Kempsey.

NSW Police have seized a dark black Mercedes-Benz that was seen on the main strip at the time of the alleged incident.

Members of a tactical unit and dog squad had previously searched for the vehicle near the Wayne Park Area, in Port Macquarie, while the ute was found nearby a short time later.

The police are still looking for the occupants of the black Mercedes who are still on the run.

At least two people are believed to be involved in the incident.

NSW Police Acting Deputy Commissioner Scott Tanner urged anyone who encounters any of the residents to contact police.

“We would ask the community not to approach any of these individuals, but to contact us directly,” Deputy Commissioner Tanner said.

Police said the body of a male victim was found during a welfare check Thursday morning at a home on Fernbank Creek Road, near the Pacific Highway.

The gunshots are said to have been fired from the Mercedes ute with other vehicles traveling near Kundabung, north of Port Macquarie and south towards Coolongolook, believed to be the target.

As police tried to stop the car earlier on Fernbank Creek Road, gunfire grazed a male motorist after the shot was fired at the police vehicle.

The male victim was treated by paramedics before being released by emergency services a short time later.

Assistant Commissioner Tanner said additional police resources are being deployed to the area to assist in the hunt for the ute.

The body that was found has not been linked to the alleged shootings that occurred.

Police are still working to identify the alleged shooter and the firearms involved in the alleged incident, while the investigation is ongoing.

Police have asked for help in locating the car, but police have urged people not to approach the vehicle.

More to come.
