Optus is experiencing a nationwide outage affecting millions of customers.

The outage was first reported at 4am on Wednesday, with Optus mobile users saying they were unable to make calls or send texts as the internet network was also down.

Optus users in Brisbane, Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, the ACT, Tasmania and Adelaide have all reported blackouts with the network.

It is understood hospital phone lines in Melbourne have also been cut.

The telco said it is aware of issues being faced by some customers, but has not yet issued a full statement on the matter.

“Our engineers are currently investigating a network error impacting Optus mobile and landline customers,” Optus said on its website.

A spokesperson apologized to customers on Twitter.

‘We are aware of an issue affecting connections for some Optus mobile and landline customers. We understand that connectivity is important and are working to restore services as a priority. We apologize for any inconvenience caused while we resolved the issue,” they said.

Melbourne’s train network was also closed earlier on Wednesday, leaving many commuters stranded.

It is not clear whether this was due to the Optus outage, but Metro Trains has confirmed that services have now resumed and bus replacements are also available.

Many Aussie Optus subscribers have shared their frustration online, with some only able to make SOS calls.

‘How is it possible that the entire country could not have #optus? I have no phone reception at all,” someone tweeted.

‘What’s going on with #Optus this morning. Woke up and the phone wasn’t working. Also no email or communication from the company. Bad form,” said another.

‘Cool, thanks to Optus, the second time I leave the house today I have no reception or data service on my phone. Let’s hope there are no customer emergencies today,” said another.
