A heavily armed gunman wearing a body armor opened fire Monday evening in southwest Philadelphia, killing four people and injuring four others, police told local media.

At least two of the people shot were youths, but their condition was not immediately known, police said, adding that all victims were taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center, The Philadelphia Inquirer reported.

A man wearing a bulletproof vest was detained by police just before 8:40 p.m., authorities said.

Just before 8:30 p.m., an officer heard gunfire near Kingsessing and found at least one victim near South 56th Street and Chester Avenue, according to police.

Police also received “multiple reports of a man armed with a rifle” shooting in that area, according to The Inquirer.
