Queen Letizia stuns in plaid pants as she arrives for sister-in-law Infanta Elena’s 60th birthday celebration (and even disgraced former King Juan Carlos made an appearance)

Queen Letizia cut an elegant figure today as she attended her sister-in-law’s 60th birthday celebrations in Madrid.

The royal, 51, appeared in good spirits as she arrived in the country’s capital with King Felipe at the exclusive Pabú restaurant.

For the family celebration, the mother of two opted for striking green and blue checked trousers.

The stylish royal was pictured wearing a thin leather belt with ornate silver hardware, which perfectly offset the trouser buttons.

Letizia let her statement pants take center stage and paired them with a simple black crew neck sweater and chunky black shoes.

The royal wore her lustrous brown hair straight and was pictured with dangling emerald earrings, bringing out the green in her plaid trousers.

Expecting it to get cooler, the queen was also seen wearing a leather jacket that she had taken off.

King Felipe – her husband of 19 years – looked equally dapper in a dark gray suit.

The royal paired his suit with a light blue shirt, a red patterned tie and maroon patent leather shoes.

The couple were seen happily chatting to staff as they arrived, before later poking their heads around the door to wave to royal fans.

Meanwhile, Felipe’s father Juan Carlos was also seen arriving at the restaurant shortly afterwards for his daughter’s birthday.

The disgraced king has lived in self-imposed exile in Abu Dhabi in recent years after resigning in June 2014 following a corruption scandal.

For the occasion, the ex-king, 85, wore a navy blue suit, white shirt and patterned tie.

After entering, Letizia stepped out of the restaurant to wave to royal fans who had been waiting for their arrival

Royal mother of two Infanta Elena celebrated her 60th birthday today with an intimate family dinner

Infanta Elena was pictured beaming as she drove her car to the restaurant and happily received a bouquet of flowers from photographers.

The royal family – who also goes by the title Duchess of Lugo – has managed to keep a relatively low profile, despite being the king’s sister.

Elena shares her daughter Victoria de Marichalar y Borbón and son Felipe with her ex-husband Jaime de Marichalar.

The couple married in 1995 before divorcing in 2009. At the time, the couple issued a statement saying they “maintain a fluid dialogue on all matters relating to the common interests of their children.”

It is not known whether Felipe and Elena’s sister Infanta Cristina will attend the festivities today – after finding herself at the center of one of the Spanish monarchy’s biggest scandals.

In 2018, the king’s former brother-in-law was jailed for financial crimes.

Businessman and retired handball player Iñaki Urdangarin, 54, was sentenced to five years in prison in 2018 for embezzlement and money laundering of more than £4.5 million through his non-profit organization, the Noos Institute.

Urdangarin married Infanta Cristina in 1997 and the couple share four children together, all in their late teens or early twenties: Juan, Pablo, Miguel and Irene.
