The nearest stores for shoppers are now the Curry Dorchester branch or the Poole branch.

A Currys spokesperson previously told The Sun: “We can confirm that our Weymouth store will close on March 1 when the lease expires.

“The colleagues involved have been informed of this decision and will be transferred to local stores such as Dorchester or Poole if they wish.

“We will also support them if they choose to move to another company.”

Local residents shared on Facebook their disappointment upon hearing the news.

One user said: “You can’t fight it. The world has changed.”

“That’s close to another store,” said another Facebook user.

A third user chimed in: “Ghost town.”

“Weymouth will have nothing left,” this user declared.

Someone on Google said, “The staff is friendly.”

Currys is over 130 years old, although its stock in the 19th century was very different to the high technology it sells today; one of the most popular items used to be bicycles.

The retailer was purchased by Dixon’s in 1984 and merged with PC World in 2014.

The retailer has more than 300 stores in the UK and more than 800 in eight different countries.

What happens to the main street?

Many retailers have struggled to make ends meet in recent years.

The pandemic was a heavy blow, as many shops had to close during the lockdown.

Since then, energy costs have risen and more consumers than ever are choosing to order online instead of going to the store.

This leaves some retailers struggling with budgets and having no choice but to close stores to cut costs.

The Body Shop is currently going into administration and has announced plans to close half of its 198 stores, seven of which were closed last week.

Boots revealed it would close 300 stores over the next year as part of plans to develop its brand.

WHSmith told The Sun it has no plans to open any more high street stores as it wants to focus on the travel side of its business.

Struggling fashion brand Superdry has said it is exploring various “cost-cutting options” as it considers a major restructuring including store closures and job cuts.

Major banks have also announced the closure of several branches.

Barclays will begin pulling down the shutters at fourteen locations in England, three in Wales and three in Scotland from April.

Even thrift stores are having a hard time Oxfam confirmed last year that it would close eight of its UK stores.
