A honeymoon should be the most romantic and relaxing getaway you’ll ever have, but things don’t always go according to plan.

Lisa Pickering, who is originally from Britain but moved to Singapore, was one such newlywed whose holiday getaway was plagued by disaster.

She revealed that it had always been her dream to visit Rome and after tying the knot, she had an extensive Italian itinerary planned for her and her husband.

But the former primary school teacher has now candidly explained where it all went wrong.

But they encountered their first stumbling block early on.

Lisa, who discovered she was pregnant just a few weeks before the wedding, opened up Insider: ‘I was exhausted from socializing and dealing with morning sickness… all I wanted to do was sleep – growing a baby is quite exhausting.’

She candidly revealed that since it was her first child, she worried about what she could and could not eat during pregnancy.

This meant that instead of sampling the best food and drink the tourist hotspot had to offer, she only ‘hunted for fruit and vegetables’.

In the days that followed, Lisa and her husband mustered “the energy to go sightseeing” — mostly on foot.

She wrote that it was “challenging to battle nausea during an August heat wave.”

And things went downhill even further after a pickpocket stole her husband’s laptop.

“Spending half a day filing a police report wasn’t the best start to the journey I had imagined all these years,” Lisa admitted.

Lisa and her husband decided to rent a car to admire the scenery in places like Sorrento, Positano and Capri.

But before they left, they drove through the Italian capital to collect their bags from the hotel to check out.

She wrote: ‘Unfortunately we were unaware that we had gone through a restricted traffic zone, a restricted area common in older European cities that requires permission to drive through.

‘We received a hefty fine which we ignored because we thought it was fraud. The collection letters that followed would prove that this was not the case.’

Lisa, who is also a trained music therapist, concluded: ‘I’ve been dreaming of visiting Italy for years, but I think expectations can never quite live up to reality.’
