Sandeshkhali: The West Bengal unit of the BJP is planning a three-day dharna marathon in Kolkata from February 27, along with a few women from Sandeshkhali. The party plans to launch protests on the lines of the Nandigram movement, which ended the Left Front’s rule in the state. Suvendu Adhikari was the key figure behind organizing the Nandigram movement as the then Trinamool Congress leader and the BJP leadership now want to use his experience to corner the Mamata Banerjee government.

The women have been protesting in Sandeshkhali for quite some time now, accusing associates of local Trinamool Congress leaders of sexual harassment and violence against them. The demonstration starts on February 27 and lasts until the evening of February 29.

Top BJP leaders take part in demonstration

BJP state president Dr Sukanta Majumdar and Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari will lead the rally along with other senior leaders of the party. The location of the demonstration will be the base of Mahatma Gandhi’s statue in central Kolkata. The decision on this count was taken at a special meeting of the BJP’s state committee convened on Friday morning to finalize the party’s strategy for the Sandeshkhali crisis in the coming days.

“There are clear instructions from the party’s central committee to explore all possible avenues and make every effort to organize movements against the state government and the ruling dispensation over the Sandeshkhali issue.

“There are also instructions to organize movements involving victims, especially the protesting women there. At this point, the idea of organizing a three-day marathon sit-in demonstration involving the protesting women of Sandeshkhali was mooted and accepted,” said a member of the state committee of the BJP.

Meanwhile, party insiders said there are clear instructions from the central leadership that the movement on the Sandeshkhali crisis between 2007 and 2009 should be organized on the lines of the movement against land acquisition in Nandigram in East Midnapore district.

History of the Nandigram Movement

The Nandigram movement is believed to have played a key role in ending the 34-year rule of the Left Front. Notably, Subhendu Adhikari joined the BJP before the 2021 Vidhan Sabha polls and in that election, he was elected from Nandigram after defeating Trinamool Congress candidate and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who went on to be elected in the twin elections from the Bhabanipur Assembly constituency. . Therefore, the BJP leadership now wants to use Adhikari’s successful experience in organizing the Nandigram movement for a movement in Sandeshkhali.
