There has been a huge spike in holiday searches to Sardinia after fans of The Little Mermaid discovered that the Disney box office hit was filmed on location on the island.

Following the May release of the live-action remake of the iconic 1989 cartoon there was a 216 percent increase in searches for the Mediterranean destination on the easyJet holidays website.

Fans are “streaming online” to book their own aquatic adventure on the Italian island where Halle Bailey, who plays Ariel, was filmed on the shore alongside Jonah Hauer-King, who plays Prince Eric, easyJet Holidays said.

The film follows the adventures of the mermaid princess Ariel who is fascinated by the human world and makes a deal with a treacherous sea witch to exchange her voice for a life above water.

The increase in searches for Sardinia is part of a new ‘set-jetting trend’ with movie buffs taking to the skies in search of ‘destinations that offer TV escapism’, according to easyJet Holidays.

There is an increasing search online for the following hotspots:

  • Sardinia, Italy: The Little Mermaid has driven a 216 percent increase in vacation searches.
  • Sicily, Italy: The White Lotus is behind a 198 percent increase in searches.
  • Turkey: Aftersun has led to a 162 percent increase in search interest.
  • Paris, France: Emily in Paris has encouraged a 143 percent increase.
  • Granada, Spain: House of The Dragon has inspired a 132 percent increase.
  • Greece: Glass Onion led to a 122 percent increase in searches.

The findings indicate a ‘significant year-over-year increase’ in the new trend, which is driven by ‘the prevalence of international settings in popular TV shows and movies’.

The travel site revealed that the second season of the Emmy award-winning drama The White Lotus resulted in a 198 percent tourism spike to Sicily, “as hobos seek vacations like wealthy but miserable romantic Tanya McQuoid-Hunt and her appointed assistant, Portie.”

House of the Dragon’s premiere season, meanwhile, inspired die-hard Thronies, said easyJet Holidays, “to flock to the Spanish city of Granada, where searches are up 132 percent.”

Likewise, a statement said, Paris “sees unwavering interest year after year as hopeful romantics crave their own Emily in Paris experience.” Searches for travel there are up 143 percent.

EasyJet Holidays added that “everyone’s favorite murder mystery of 2022, Glass Onion, has led to a 122 percent increase in searches for the Greek islands,” while coming-of-age drama Aftersun has led to a reported 162 percent increase in searches for the destination where it was shot – Turkey.

This revelation has spawned a new genre of package tours for fans looking to bring TV and movie fantasies to life.

Commercial director Paul Bixby said, “We all look for escape through our screens, so it’s no surprise that our favorite TV shows and movies influence our travel choices.”
