Jeddah/Washington: A security guard and the attacker who opened fire outside the United States consulate in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, were killed in a shootout in the Saudi port city on Wednesday.

Saudi Gazette quoted an official Makkah (Mecca) police spokesman as saying that the gunman who attacked the US consulate building in Jeddah on Wednesday was killed in a gunfight. died after being seriously wounded in the firefight, the spokesman said.

Mecca police said security investigations are still ongoing to determine the circumstances of the incident, ANI reported.

“At 6:45 p.m. on Wednesday night, a person in a car pulled up to the US consulate building in Jeddah and got out with a firearm in hand. The security authorities have taken the initiative to deal with him as the situation requires,” the Mecca police said in a statement, according to the Saudi Gazette.

The US State Department confirmed the incident, saying a gunman who opened fire at the US consulate in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and a local security guard who worked at the consulate were killed in a shootout on Wednesday.

After the attack, the consulate went into lockdown when the shooting took place and no Americans or US personnel were injured, the department said, adding that the motive behind the attack was not immediately clear.

The attacker was killed by Saudi security forces, the foreign ministry said, citing Saudi authorities, who said they were investigating.

According to Saudi Arabia’s state news agency, citing Saudi police, the man had exited a vehicle outside the consulate with a gun.

“The authorities have taken the initiative to deal with him as the situation requires,” the news agency said. It said the killed consulate security officer was Nepalese.
