The Duchess of York has revealed her life was saved during breast surgery when a skin specialist insisted moles were checked for signs of cancer.

Sarah Ferguson, 64, who last week revealed she is battling skin cancer, has told friends she owes her life to Dr Catherine Borysiewicz, a dermatologist married to a leading plastic surgeon.

Dr. Borysiewicz, 44, works at the private King Edward VII Hospital in London, where Sarah underwent reconstructive surgery after breast cancer last year.

Dr. Borysiewicz requested that several moles be removed and analyzed at the same time as the surgery.

Sarah then discovered that one mole was malignant and she was diagnosed with skin cancer just before Christmas.

A friend said: 'Sarah feels she owes her life to Catherine. It was purely due to her vigilance that moles were removed when she was in hospital for reconstructive surgery after her mastectomy for breast cancer. Then the skin cancer was discovered.

'If Catherine had not insisted, these moles would not have been checked. We are talking about an aggressive cancer with the potential to spread. Now everyone is praying that it is picked up at the earliest possible stage.”

Dr. Borysiewicz, a former NHS consultant, has been featured in the prestigious Tatler Address Book, a lifestyle guide for the wealthy, where she has been praised for her 'friendly, approachable style'.

She has been married to leading London plastic surgeon Theo Nanidis since 2005 and they have a son and a daughter. Her Instagram page reveals romantic getaways with her husband, enjoying Michelin-starred dinners and sunsets on the island of Santorini, Greece.

Dr. Borysiewicz has collaborated with beauty brand L'Oreal and commented on skin conditions for the Daily Mail and other publications. She is chair of the skin cancer group Royal Marsden Partners and spokesperson for the British Association of Dermatologists.
