A real estate agent has been reprimanded online after sending a ‘threatening’ email to a tenant who was in arrears.

The message was sent to a tenant by a South Australian estate agent, who later uploaded the content to a Facebook group.

The subject line of the email says, “Do you need to call the mover?”

“Wow, it doesn’t look good at all,” it begins.

“So you’re now five days behind! Let’s hope the landlord extends your lease!’

The tenant, who posted it to the Facebook group Don’t Rent Me, reacted shocked after receiving the sinister email.

“It’s just not right to send an email like that,” they said.

“(I’m a) bit stunned. I’ve organized to pay for this week.”

The tenant explained that they had paid and were ahead of their payments.

They also said they organized a late payment through the property before the broker’s email was sent.

Members of the Facebook group denounced the agent’s email for its threatening nature.

“Aside from the late payment situation, that’s the most passive-aggressive, lazy, poorly written, unprofessional bull*** I’ve seen in a long time,” said one user.

Another said, “Whether or not it’s automated, that’s absolutely disgusting.”

“Let’s just play with people’s lives and emotions like it’s a game.

“God forbid they ever find themselves in a similar position.”

“Very unprofessional and mildly threatening,” a third added.

Others described it as ‘threatening’, ‘disgusting’ and ‘unethical’, with one of them stating that they would file a complaint.

A group member revealed that they received the exact same email from their agent when they fell behind on their rent.

“My real estate agent sent this exact email when I was a few days behind on rent,” they wrote.

The Real Estate Institute of South Australia (REISA) described the email as not “typical”.

“We certainly think it could have been more professional,” says the organization 7News.

It probably could have been worded a little better. Since tenants are struggling with the (housing) crisis, balance is needed.’

The REISA said it’s normal for automated emails to be sent when rent is due, but explained that if it were automated it “definitely wouldn’t be that kind of email.”

“This is extreme,” they added.
