After a blackout at BravoCon 2023, Shep Rose was forced to face his problems with alcohol.
“I am at a crossroads. I was out of control, drunk in Las Vegas. It scared the hell out of me,” Shep, 44, told his castmates during Part 1 of the series. Southern charm reunion, broadcast on Thursday, January 11. “I blacked out. I can’t even tell you what happened [at BravoCon].”
Host Andy Cohen told Austen Krol “I’m really trying to take care of Shep” over the weekend of November 2023, to which Austen, 36, replied: “That’s not the first time.”
Shep acknowledged that he “appreciated” what Austen did to help and explained that he has since had a “conversation” with his “close friends” at home about his problems.
Craig Conover and Austen, who are both close to Shep, noted that they were invited and chose not to attend Shep. He came to the discussion about Jesus after years of dealing with all his ups and downs.
“This road you’re on ends at a cliff. I can’t sit in that car anymore. That’s why I didn’t go to that meeting,” admitted Craig, 34. “It’s dark after BravoCon, but I thought, ‘He’s going to ruin his life and I have to be okay with that because we’ve been here before.'”
Shep got a little defensive and told both Craig and Austen that they “didn’t owe me anything,” prompting the reality stars to remind Shep that they had his back.
“I’m your best friend. I’m here, dude. I’ve been there for you,” Austen said, to which Shep responded, “I’d always love your support and help. I hear you. … I’m really in a head space like, ‘I need to make some big changes.’”
Shep noted that after BravoCon he realized, “I had nothing. I thought, ‘Who am I? How can I be of value to someone? You’re hurting yourself, brother.” He explained that after decades of working hard in the party scene, he feels like, “My body and my mind are telling me, ‘No, no, no, sir.’ I can’t do it the way I used to.”
Shep admitted that he hasn’t stopped drinking completely. “I just don’t drink liquor. I don’t drink shots. I just drink beer,” he said.
Revealing he was in the same spot a few years ago, Craig said: “I haven’t had liquor in two years, but I had to make a huge change this summer. I’m addicted to that kind of thing.”
The Sewing Down South founder admitted it was “sad” watching Shep get drunk over and over again. Craig noted that he is “sorry” for being so hard on Shep and that he does love him. Shep once again acknowledged that he had heard Craig and added, “I’m going to follow your lead.”
Shep’s ex-girlfriend Taylor-Ann Green also weighed in on his progress, saying: “It makes me happy to hear all this. I know the real Shep. He is an incredible, kind, smart person.”
Elsewhere in the episode, Shep revealed that his infidelity and drinking played a role in his and Taylor’s split in July 2022. However, he said he thinks the TV cameras made things much worse.
“We probably would have gotten married,” Shep claimed when asked if the show ruined their romance. ‘Because then I wouldn’t be so distracted. I would be a different person. I’d say, “I met someone I really care about, and this is it.”
Cohen, 55, pointed out that filming Southern charm may no longer be “healthy” for Shep, but he insisted he thinks he can “do it” and overcome his problems, even with the cameras. “Stay tuned,” Shep teased.
Part 2 of the Southern charm The Season 9 reunion airs on Bravo Thursday, January 18 at 8pm ET.
