Uttar Pradesh: Swami Prasad Maurya resigned as general secretary of the Samajwadi Party on Tuesday. The 70-year-old senior leader wrote a letter to party chief Akhilesh Yadav, regarding his resignation from the post of Samajwadi Party general secretary.

However, he further said that he will remain a member of the party and will actively work to strengthen the party.

The Political Career of Swami Prasad Maurya

Swami Prasad Maurya started his political career as a member of the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP). Maurya was a prominent figure in the BSP and represented Padrauna constituency as a Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA). During the BSP rule in Uttar Pradesh, he also held the post of a minister.

Maurya shocked many people in 2016 when she abruptly left the BSP, citing issues such as ticket sales and internal party corruption as reasons. He then joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), one of India's largest political parties.

Given his influence in the Maurya community, which constitutes a significant part of Uttar Pradesh's voter base, Maurya's induction into the BJP was seen as a notable development. After joining the BJP, Maurya served in the Yogi Adityanath-led government of Uttar Pradesh. minister for several years. Later, Maurya joined the Samajwadi Party in January 2022. He was not given a ticket to flee his stronghold of Padrauna. Instead, he was asked to run from Fazilnagar, which he lost to Surendra Kumar Kushwaha of the BJP in the 2022 Uttar Pradesh Legislative Assembly election.
