Weather in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide: Weekend heat wave hits

A severe heatwave will see temperatures soar across Australia this weekend, with one state bracing for the possibility of a third tropical cyclone.

Large parts of the country will enjoy temperatures in the low 30s this weekend before a cool change comes next week.

It comes as meteorologists say the possibility of a third tropical cyclone making landfall in Queensland as early as Tuesday has increased.

The low-pressure system will strengthen over the Coral Sea for a week before returning to the coast as heavy rain continues to hit parts of the state.

Here, Daily Mail Australia reveals what to expect in your city this weekend.

Sydney

Sydneysiders are in for a dry and hot weekend, with temperatures reaching 28 degrees Celsius on Friday, 27 degrees Celsius on Saturday and 32 degrees Celsius on Sunday.

The Bureau warned that large and strong surf conditions would make activities such as fishing, swimming and surfing dangerous in the affected areas.

Brisbane

Severe thunderstorms, heavy rain and possible flash flooding were forecast for northern Queensland between Port Douglas and Paluma on Friday.

The intense rainfall and strong winds will remain a risk in the state's northeast, where the effects of former Cyclone Kirrily are still being felt.

It comes as the likelihood increases that another tropical cyclone will make landfall on the Queensland coast as soon as next Tuesday.

Weatherzone's Joel Pippard said a low pressure system formed near K'gari, along the subtropical part of the Queensland coast, on Wednesday.

The system is currently classified as a subtropical low and will have to go through several transitions to become a tropical cyclone.

The latest models indicate that the system will strengthen the Coral Sea for a week, directly impacting Caledonia and possibly Vanuatu.

It then heads west to the Queensland coast.

“At this stage there is enough uncertainty to take the tropical cyclone forecast with a large grain of salt,” Pippard said on Thursday.

“It's best to be aware of this system, but not to be alarmed about it.”

The agency said on Thursday there was a 15 percent chance it would become a cyclone. Brisbane will remain warm and sunny this weekend, with highs of 32 degrees Celsius.

Perth

The Bureau said on Thursday there would be a cool change in the south-west of the state this weekend after a sweltering three-day heatwave.

Daytime temperatures reached the low 40s earlier this week, with northern regions of the state such as Gascoyne Junction reaching 47 degrees Celsius.

Scorching temperatures of 39 degrees Celsius were forecast for Perth on Friday, before dropping to 31 degrees Celsius on Saturday and 26 degrees Celsius on Sunday.

It comes as a welcome reprieve for WA residents who were warned earlier this week to prepare for 'extreme heatwave conditions'.

Melbourne

Victorians will enjoy a sweltering weekend on Sunday, when temperatures were initially expected to reach 38 degrees Celsius, making it the hottest day of the year.

Sunday is expected to reach 34 degrees Celsius, with strong winds of up to 50 kilometers per hour.

However, the warm weather is not expected to last. There will be a cool change on Monday, which will drop temperatures next week.

Victoria's balmy weather is a welcome change from the wet and blustery conditions the state has experienced for much of December.

The Bureau has yet to label a single day in Melbourne as 'hot' – when temperatures rise above 35 degrees Celsius this summer.

Adelaide

Temperatures have been steadily rising this week, with temperatures expected to reach 33 degrees Celsius on Saturday and Sunday.

Adelaide will experience a cool change from Monday, with temperatures expected to remain in the low to mid 20s for most of the week.

Warm weather is expected to return on Thursday with temperatures up to 27 degrees Celsius.

Hobart

Hobart is in for a scorching heat on Saturday, with temperatures reaching 27 degrees Celsius.

However, showers and cool winds ensure that the perfect summer weather is short-lived, with a high chance of rain on Sunday and Monday.

Temperatures will remain around 20 degrees for much of the week.

Darwin

The Northern Territory will remain cloudy on Friday, followed by a possible shower or storm on Saturday, when temperatures are expected to reach 33 degrees Celsius.

The Bureau has forecast 40% rain in Darwin and just beyond on Saturday.

More rain could fall on Sunday as it is expected to be warm and cloudy.

Canberra

Clouds will partly clear over Canberra on Thursday, followed by a sunny day on Sunday.

Sunday is also forecast to be the capital's hottest day this week, with a high of 36 degrees Celsius.
