She also said she was busy ‘supervising’ the cleaner and gardener.

The mother said she wanted to focus 100 percent on signing the form, but she didn’t have time to do so before the deadline passed.

She added that her daughter had become very upset when she realized she could not go on the trip, and her father had to go to the school and beg them to let her go.

Reddit users have flooded the comments section of posts to share their thoughts.

Many agreed with the woman that installing the camera was an invasion of her privacy, but also admitted that they thought she was lazy.

In response to this comment, another person said: She spends her days on Reddit complaining about her life as a stay-at-home mom.

Another person said: “Honestly, you sound lazy and unreliable.

There are clever ways to make it shine. . .

GET ON ORDER: Start your spring cleaning journey by decluttering.

Take a garbage bag and walk through each room collecting any unwanted items.

Then move all the ornaments and anything on the top of the surface to the center of the room and work from top to bottom by first dusting the high surfaces, such as lampshades on the ceiling and the tops of cabinets, before moving to the floors .

This prevents dirt from falling onto surfaces that you have already cleaned.

MAKE IT UP: Forget expensive cleaning products and go the budget-friendly DIY way and get excellent results.

Mix vinegar and water in a spray bottle to spray over dirty surfaces. You can also use this to mop floors.

Sprinkle baking soda on carpets and upholstery to remove and remove stains.

Lemon juice diluted with water is a great way to remove kitchen grease and leaves a citrus scent, while shaving cream polished into mirrors and taps will make them sparkle.

ON THE CHEAP: You don’t need fancy gadgets to create an immaculate home.

My inexpensive 2-part paste removes soap scum around your bathtub – my favorite ingredient also removes scuffs

Old toothbrushes dipped in vinegar are perfect for scrubbing grout and hard-to-reach corners, while cut-up T-shirts are an excellent alternative to expensive disposable or microfiber cloths.

If you have a dishwasher, set it to an eco wash at low temperature and fill it with toothbrush holders, toys and even the crisper drawers from your fridge to save time and effort.

GOOD FRAGRANCES: If you have essential oils at home, add a few drops to your homemade cleaning products to make your home smell wonderful.

For a DIY air freshener, mix a few drops of oil with water in a spray bottle or fill an empty perfume bottle with water.

Just shake and spray.

Even her neurotically clean family says her house doesn’t smell.

She shared her tips after seeing a call on Reddit.

“Has anyone figured out the best way to keep your house from smelling like dog?” the Redditor asked.

“So any tips or advice on methods anyone has tried to reduce this?” she wrote.

She couldn’t have asked for a more detailed answer after.

When one woman summed up the extent of her efforts, it seemed she had every angle covered.

No stone was left unturned in her quest to rid her home of dog odors.

Other dog-loving Redditors were quick to share their methods.

But the size of her surpassed all others.

She has gone to great lengths to keep her home fragrant and free of dog odors.

“This is my routine, and honest family members who are neurotic about cleanliness have told me that my house doesn’t stink,” she said.

“This may be OTT for most, but I need a cleaner environment than usual,” she added.

I would never own three dog breeds after working as a trainer – a ‘bad’ type is out for blood and a ‘meat rocket’ to avoid

She summed up her enormous efforts in the field of odor-eating:

  • Provide wooden floors with sealed holes, combined with washable Ruggable carpets
  • Roomba Hoover does its thing every day and mops weekly
  • HEPA filters were left running all the time and the windows creaked all the time
  • The sofa and dog bed have removable covers that are washed weekly
  • All laundry is rinsed in Dettol detergent (antibacterial/viral), just like the Roomba filters
  • Unwashable upholstery sprayed weekly with Dettol surface disinfectant
  • The dog is bathed every two to three weeks, or whenever she rolls in the poop, whichever comes first

Other Redditors also shared their tips.

“I started putting baking soda on the couch once or twice a month at night and vacuuming in the morning. It removes the odors that penetrate deep into the fabric.” one person said.

“I throw a blanket over the couch where they are because it’s easier to wash the blankets than the couch,” said a second person.

Another Redditor suggested using a HEPA purification filter, as well as a few other tips.

“Open the windows to air out the house once a day and wash their toys and bedding regularly,” they said.

“Maintain oral hygiene, brush regularly and before having guests, I open all the windows for an hour and boil water with cinnamon sticks for 30 minutes,” she added.

But for this dog owner, eliminating bad odors started from within.

“I don’t know if there is scientific evidence to back this up, but after I started giving fish oil to my pup, the smell was no longer strong,” they said.

WHEN it comes to cleaning, most of us don’t want to spend our hard-earned money on expensive products.

While you can’t eliminate chores completely, there’s an easier way to prevent limescale from building up around your faucets – and it’s completely free.

If you have unsightly mess on your bathroom or kitchen faucets, you are not alone.

This annoying limescale deposit is common in the south-east of Britain and is the result of calcium and magnesium remaining as hard water evaporates.

While you may think you’ll have to scrub for hours or buy expensive products, you can keep limescale at bay with just a few pennies in your back pocket.

This brilliant tip was originally shared by a cleaning lady on Facebook and we can’t get enough of it.

Originally posted on the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips and Tricks group, they responded to a member who had been struggling to remove the built-up gunk on her taps.

Despite having just moved in, she had discovered that the taps had not been cleaned properly and even shared a photo of them looking crusty.

In the caption, she then asked, “Can anyone help me clean this faucet? What would I use and how? New rental property…just moved.”

While many members suggested using traditional bleach or scrubbing it with a stiff brush, one Facebook user suggested using a wet 2-cent coin to remove years of buildup.

For those tempted to try this at home, the domestic goddess suggested soaking the unsightly faucet first before using this tip.

They wrote: “[Use] Kilrock gel…leave for 5-10 minutes then remove with a copper coin.”

Mrs Hinch shows off the chaos-strewn boot room to show that even cleaning professionals have messy homes

It may sound like an old wives’ tale, but the markings on the coin act as a mild abrasive and help break down the gunk without damaging the taps.

Others even agreed, with another user adding that they would use this household hack for decades.

“That’s what I do…,” they said enthusiastically, adding, “I’ve been doing it for 50 years with different cranes.”

In fact, you can now buy Kilrock spray to help you tackle those taps for just £2.49 at The Range.

Don’t despair if you don’t have it in your local store, though, as you can use simple household items to help remove any remaining limescale.

A third group member even shared how they remove hardened limescale using half a lemon.

“Cut a lemon [in half] and attach it to the tap with a strap,” they told the group, writing: “Leave it as long as possible.

“This will soften the build-up [and then] use a muted 2 cent coin to remove it.

Alternatively, you can also make your taps shine with some kitchen roll and white vinegar.

“[Use a] small sandwich bag, [filled with] paper towel soaked in white vinegar,” another explained, adding that they would place this on the spot and secure it with rubber bands.

Once this is done, you can simply leave it for a few hours before removing the bag and quickly rinsing the tap with clean water.

It sounds like you have no excuse for not having sparkling taps with all this house.

You can also remove limescale with white vinegar or half a lemon

Ellen (@ellentheblogger) has almost 6,000 followers on TikTok, where she shares home inspiration videos.

She revealed how to transform hard-to-clean areas in a now-viral video, which has been viewed more than 278,000 times.

“Top five tips for spring cleaning,” she said.

“First, use baby oil on stainless steel to keep it shiny and fingerprint-free.

“Second, don’t use paper towels to clean your glass or windows, use a squeegee instead, which will save costs.”

She demonstrated the first hack by cleaning her dishwasher with a soft cloth and baby oil.

A small bottle of baby oil is available for just $2.16 at Walmart.

The surface of the dishwasher glistened enough to almost reveal her reflection.

The cleaner then showed off how streak-free her bathroom mirrors looked after wiping them with a squeegee.

The cleaning tool can also be found at Walmart for $6.

“Third, use shaving cream to clean your showers and bathroom,” she continued.

“And to remove any musty odors.

I clean so many places in my house with a super cheap purchase – it also freshens the smell of rooms and clothes –

‘Four: Whiten dirty white clothes with a few drops of Mrs. Steward’s Liquid Blueing.

“And finally, remove any burn marks from pots or pans with the Bar Keeper’s Friend Cleaner.”

Mrs. Stewart’s Liquid Blueing is highly rated on Walmart’s website, where it costs $15.

“This stuff really works! It took on the mild yellow look of my whites,” reads one review.

“My whites are brighter and whiter!! A little goes a long way!”

Shoppers also rave about Bar Keeper’s Friend Cleaner, which costs $6.50 for a pack of two at Walmart.

Delighted customers have given the device a 4.6-star rating and written hundreds of rave reviews.

Ellen’s cleaning supplies

  • Baby oil
  • Suction nozzle
  • Shaving foam
  • Mrs. Stewart’s Liquid Blueing
  • Bar Keeper’s Friend cleaner

“This stuff is amazing,” said one customer. “I like to use it to clean my countertops and my bathtub.

“If they are extra dirty or have coffee stains on them, I pour some bartender friend on them, add a little water and use a paper towel to rub it all around and then let it sit for a few minutes.

“Go back, add more water and wipe everything down.”

Ellen’s jumping hacks video received more than 14,000 likes, with many people thanking her in the comments section for sharing.

  • Cleaning guru Jeeves reveals secret ‘latch’ that opens the washing machine door

Nothing is more annoying and frustrating than the door of your washing machine automatically locking and you urgently need to open it.

You may have realized that you forgot to add something to your laundry, left something important in your pocket, or had to end the cycle early while you were in a hurry. So what can you do to open the door, short of using brute force?

One cleaning expert has left people in awe after revealing a secret button hidden on washing machines that can open the door while the wash is still running.

Jeeves, from New York, USA, who goes by the name Clean Freakz or @jeeves_ny on TikTok, regularly shares cleaning tips and tricks, and in a recent videohe showed how to gain access to the ‘secret lock’.

The cleaning guru said: ‘You should know that there is a secret latch on your washing machine that allows you to open the door in case of an emergency or if your machine is broken and the door won’t unlock.’

Cleaning expert Jeeves has left people in awe after revealing a secret button on washing machines that can open the door while the wash is still running

He added: ‘For example, you lose strength and you don’t want your clothes to get mouldy.’

Demonstrating where the filter is located on his own washing machine, a Miele model, Jeeves continued: ‘It’s right next to the filter that you should clean every few months.’

According to Currys, homeowners should be advised to clean their washing machine filter every four to six weeks.

This is usually located at the very bottom of the machine and you may need to remove a small lid to access it, and place towels on the floor to prevent any leaking water from spilling out once it is opened.

Jeeves then instructed, “Grab something small and slide the bolt to the left. This is literally a string that opens the door. This will immediately end the cycle and open the door.’

However, he stressed: ‘I only recommend it as a last resort if your machine won’t open.’

Many people thanked Jeeves for his advice in the comments section, while others were baffled as they couldn’t find the filter on their own machines.

One person wrote: ‘Not everyone has this, ask me how I know,’ while another said: ‘I don’t have a filter on mine that I can find, nor does it have a magic switch.’

However, some people had alternative suggestions for those looking for a way to open the doors of closed washing machines without a secret button in their filters.

One person advised: ‘Turn the machine off, it will open after a few minutes,’ while a second person wrote: ‘Turn it off and wait 2/3 minutes and it will open.’

The smell is unbearable and the mess is staggering – but a top cleaner says sprucing up hoarder homes like this is the ‘most rewarding’ job she’s ever done.

Arlene Jayne Batefrom Victoria, was forced to quit her corporate job in 2019 and didn’t know where her career would take her.

“I had a bit of a nervous breakdown,” Ms Bate said.

‘I had a burnout and didn’t want to return to the corporate world.’

But eventually she found purpose in helping people who have “lost” control of their homes and have not been able to properly maintain their properties for years.

Many tend to judge hoarders unfairly – because they cannot see beyond the accumulation of dirt and waste – but Ms Bate understands that this is the symptom of a complex mental health problem.

“The general perception is that hoarders are lazy slobs, which is far from the truth,” the cleaning professional said.

‘We’re getting thousands of comments on our social media pages with people calling them ‘filthy pigs’ and all kinds of horrible names.

“But what most people don’t realize is that hoarding is often a condition usually caused by some kind of trauma.”

Such triggers range from a death in the family to physical injury.

Mrs. Bate, running now Mrs. Muscle Cleansinghas worked hard to dismantle harmful stereotypes about hoarders and rebrand them as “hoarders” to alleviate the stigma.

Sometimes collecting is a learned behavior.

For example, Ms. Bate has had clients who grew up in a collector’s home and then became collectors because that’s the only way they can make a living.

“People don’t live this way because they want to, or because they’re lazy,” Ms. Bate said.

Throughout her career, Bate has worked hard to dismantle dangerous stereotypes surrounding hoarding

Ms. Bate gave an example of a young man she helped a few months ago.

‘He lived with his mother and they had agreed that no matter what, he would not send her to an old people’s home. But unfortunately, she developed dementia and it became a challenge to care for her alone.

‘Eventually he decided to put his mother in an assisted living facility, and the first night she was really horrible to him. The mother was not lucid, she was not in the right state of mind – she told him that she hated him and that she would never forgive him.

‘The client went home after the argument and his mother died that same night.

“That traumatic event triggered his hoarding and he started collecting things he thought his mother would like.”

Ms Bate admitted that hoarding can be fatal.

“Hoarders live in an environment that poses a fire hazard,” she said. ‘

Many home fires are not caused by the condition of the home, but because it is messy.’

There are different types of hoarding and patients collect items for different reasons, Ms Bate said.

Sometimes it’s because they have an emotional bond. For example, the cleaners enter a house where there are a lot of baby clothes, even though the residents have no grandchildren.

“They think they’re going to have grandchildren and they want to be prepared,” she explained.

‘It’s difficult to work with the customer in those circumstances, because those things are not necessary now.

‘Then you have those who collect things that might come in handy one day, like jam jars. If someone has an empty one, he cannot throw it away because he can fill it with something in the future and give it away. There is no way to get rid of that item.”

Sometimes customers become obsessive about an item.

“They may have a can of beans, but they want to be able to see all four sides of it, so they buy three more and put them together on a shelf.”

Mrs Muscle Cleaning advises its customers during every step of the process

Sometimes customers just want all the stuff gone and they can start over

Mrs Muscle Cleaning advises its customers during every step of the process

‘We advise our customers during every step of the process. We have two people work with a client to clear out items in their home that they don’t need. Normally we carry out a large-scale emptying and then a deep, industrial cleaning.

‘Another approach is called the ‘get sh*t done’ method. We go in, take out all the trash, remove everything in the house. There is no customer intervention, we just clean until the house shines again.

The one thing Bate always encounters when she's cleaning out houses are spiders

“But the other form of hoarding is when you can’t clear everything out, because it causes additional trauma and can worsen the disease.”

Ms Bate also revealed it is a myth that hidden treasures are often found under piles of belongings.

‘What collectors have usually has no value. They collect cardboard boxes, old newspapers, furniture from the street, empty jars, cans of beans.’

The one thing Bate always encounters when she’s cleaning out houses are spiders.

“There aren’t always cockroaches or other insects or rodents, but there are always hundreds of spiders,” she said.

“We just worked on a house where hundreds of redbacks came running out.

‘We found dozens of nests everywhere, dark and dirty everywhere. On the back of a laundry basket, under the trash on the floor, they were literally everywhere.”

Ms Bate and her team move the spiders when they can, but that is not always possible.

Despite the hard work and difficulties, Bate revealed that she far prefers cleaning collective housing over simple household chores.

“In my opinion, domestic clients are much more demanding and are never satisfied with the work you do,” she said.

‘They are often not grateful for the hard work involved in cleaning, unlike our hoarders.

‘Now I know we provide a service that allows customers to make a huge positive change in their lives. You don’t get the same satisfaction from working as a domestic helper.

‘I like that we provide an environment where clients can move from a life of chaos to a life of peace and tranquility. Hopefully the transition in their home will allow them to incorporate that into the challenges they encounter in their daily lives.”

From second-hand sites to car boot sales, Harriet Cooke looks at the different ways to sell your stuff.

Car boot sale: good for instant cash

THIS is a great way to unload a lot of low value items such as curios, clothes, toys and books in one go.

Find your nearest retail location at carbootjunction.com.

The cost of a pitch starts at a few euros but can go up to £25.

READ MORE MONEY SAVING TIPS

You will need a table, groundsheets, change, carrier bags, a packed lunch and batteries to demonstrate how electrical appliances work.

Make sure goods look as presentable as possible, arrange them by category if possible, and spread them out so buyers can see what’s there.

Antiques expert Antony Charman of vintagecashcow.co.uk estimates that sellers can typically pocket ten to fifteen percent of an item’s original value.

He said: “Remember that regular visitors to car boot sales are prepared to haggle. Start with a slightly higher price than you actually expect, because then they have room to get you down.”

When packing, consider shouting, “50 cents all” if you want all your goods gone.

I’m a car boot sale professional and here are my top tips for getting the best deals. And no, you really don’t have to get up at the crack of dawn
Katie Robertson, left, and son Arthur, right, often set up a stall at their local car boot sale, making deals on the spot and making money straight away

CASE STUDY: Mum Katie Roberton and her son Arthur, from Bournemouth, often set up a stall at their local Ashley Heath car boot sale.

Ceramic artist Katie, whose work is on outlandishcreations.com, said: “The great thing about boot sales is you can make deals on the spot and get money straight away.”

Arthur, 12, said of the sale day: “It’s a lot of fun. I am selling my shoes that no longer fit.

I get between €5 and €30 depending on the condition and brand.

“A new pair of Nikes could fetch £30. My Hot Wheels toy cars and old children’s books sell for 50 cents each.”

Sell Locally: Good for flogging large items

FACEBOOK Marketplace, Gumtree and other selling groups allow you to target local buyers.

It’s easy to create listings. Take some good photos of your item and upload it with as detailed a description as possible.

Interested parties will send you a message and, if you accept their offer, can collect the goods from your home and pay in cash.

Be wary of buyers who want to pay by other means, such as bank transfer or PayPal. Sometimes these can be scammers.

These sites are free to use, while a platform like eBay can take more than ten percent of your sales price.

Common household items such as games consoles, sofas, televisions, books, DVDs and baby clothes are among the most common to be snapped up quickly.

Michael Foote, from money-saving site quotegoat.com, said: “Facebook Marketplace is a great place to sell unwanted furniture and have someone local come and collect it.

“It’s a good idea to include the cost of the amount you originally paid so buyers can see how much of a discount you gave.”

Joanne Swali says it's easy to sell things on Facebook Marketplace, compared to the hassle of sending things to the post office for eBay buyers

CASE STUDY: Mum-of-two Joanne Swali, 42, who lives near Basingstoke, Hants, made £500 last year selling unwanted items on Facebook Marketplace.

The businesswoman, who runs wall sticker company stickerscape.co.uk, said: “I find it a bit of a hassle to sell things on eBay and then send them to the post office.

“It’s easier to sell on Facebook and have the items collected, even if it means occasionally dealing with scam messages or time wasters.

“Branded items seem to be doing very well, especially Ikea or baby toys from Lamaze, LeapFrog and VTech.

“I sell old toys in bundles. A box of my son’s old cars, diggers and construction vehicles sold for around £20.

“It’s faster to sell items in groups than to list them all individually.”

Resale or auction site: Good for designer gear

THERE are many resale sites for selling second-hand goods – and some are better for selling certain items because of the audience they attract.

Vinted is great for unloading clothes and is free for sellers while buyers pay fees plus shipping.

Consider eBay for selling higher value goods that justify seller fees, which are 12.8 percent of total sales, plus a 30 cent surcharge per order.

From April 8, there will also be a new “Regulatory Operating Fee” of 0.35 percent. So if you sold a keyboard for $30, you would pay $4.23.

Depop is great and charges sellers 12.9 percent plus 30 cents.

For designer clothes, try the Vestiaire Collective, which is usually free for sellers.

Please include all relevant details when describing the item, including brand name, dimensions, sizing, condition and materials.

Sarah Jamieson made £1,000 from a clothes clearance and notes that old brands such as Dorothy Perkins are doing particularly well

CASE STUDY: Mum-of-two Sarah Jamieson, 41, from Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland, made £1,000 on Vinted last year after clearing out a wardrobe.

The photographer, who runs pictorialphotography.co.uk, said: “Last year I put about 75 items on Vinted and they each raised about £5 and £35.

“Most were from mid-range brands such as Monsoon, Laura Ashley and Mantaray.

“Boden clothes are selling really well, I had a few of their jumpers selling for £35 each.

“I’ve found that old brands like Dorothy Perkins seem to be popular, perhaps because people remember seeing the stores before they all closed.”

Declaring taxable profits from sales

SECOND-HAND selling can help line your pockets, but if you earn more than £1,000 a year (April to March) from it, you may have to declare it and pay tax.

Platforms including eBay and Vinted now share seller information with HM Revenue & Customs.

If you earn more than the limit, you must complete a tax return yourself. This calculates how much you owe.

You can contact HMRC online at gov.uk with any questions or by calling 0300 200 3300.

FREE FOREIGN EXPENSES FOR HSBC TRAVELERS

HSBC plans to abolish all charges for British spending abroad, starting by making its debit cards free for people going on holiday.

Sources say the change will start with Premier current account customers before trickling down to HSBC cash advances and standard bank account holders.

While plans are in the works, there is no confirmation that the change will happen anytime soon.

Most major banks charge fees when customers use their debit card for spending or cash withdrawals abroad.

Customers of First Direct and Virgin Money already benefit from free spending and withdrawals, alongside customers of online banks Chase, Monzo and Starling.

HSBC currently charges 2.75 percent on all payments or withdrawals abroad, excluding Global Money Account customers.

The costs can quickly add up, as the costs apply per transaction. Two £20 meals will cost you an additional £1.10 in fees.

FAMILIES can apply for extra childcare allowance this spring, ahead of the introduction in September.

The government has confirmed that parents of nine-month-olds can apply for 15 hours of free cover from May 12.

It encourages people to register as early as possible to ensure they get a place.

Parents of two-year-olds will receive 15 hours of free childcare from April.

Meanwhile, working families with children aged nine months to three years will receive 30 hours of free childcare from September 2025.

Currently you can get 30 hours of free childcare for children between three and four years old.

Apply at gov.uk/apply-free-childcare-if-youre-working.

Once the application has been approved, you will receive a code that you can pass on to your childcare organization.

Parents who don’t have Universal Credit or Tax Credit may be eligible for £2,000 a year of tax-free childcare for each of their children.

Those who claim certain benefits may be able to get free childcare for two-year-olds.

You should contact your municipality or local provider for eligibility information.

How do you produce a global sporting event, bringing millions of people to one city, in an era of global warming?

That is the test for the Olympic Games in Paris this summer.

Organizers say they are putting the games on a climate diet. They say these Olympics will generate no more than half the greenhouse gas emissions of the recent Olympics. That means tightening our belts on everything that produces emissions from the planet: electricity, food, buildings and transportation, including the jet fuel that athletes and fans burn as they travel around the world to get there.

An event that attracts 10,500 athletes and an estimated 15 million spectators will by definition take a toll on the environment. And that has led those who love the games but hate the pollution to suggest that the Olympics should be spread around the world, in existing facilities, to eliminate the need for so much new construction and air travel. That’s why Paris is so closely watched.

More space is made for bicycles and less for cars. It does away with the huge diesel generators that are a fixture of major sporting events. It plans guest menus that are less polluting to grow and cook than typical French dishes: more plants, less steak au poivre. Solar panels will temporarily float on the Seine.

But perhaps the most important act of the organizers is what they don’t do: they don’t build. At least, not that much.

Rather than building new showpieces for the Games (which generate a lot of greenhouse gas emissions from the production of concrete and steel), the Paris Olympics are repurposing many of the city’s existing attractions, including the Grand Palais, the square that known as the Concorde and even built a swimming pool for the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris.

It is not without controversy.

In a notable effort to reduce emissions, the decision to forego conventional air conditioning in the athletes’ village has raised concerns. Instead, the buildings will rely on a cooling system that uses water drawn from the subsurface. Several Olympic teams are considering bringing their own air conditioners.

Still, the hope is that experiments like these will provide a template for other Olympic Games in the future, and for other cities around the world. The few new buildings being built, including the athletes’ homes, a swimming complex and an arena, use less cement and more wood. They have solar panels and greenery on their roofs.

The new buildings must also have a life long after the Olympic Games. They are designed to be used by local residents for decades to come and, say leaders of the Paris 2024 organizing committee, to revitalize the city’s outskirts. “We have set ourselves ambitions that have never been set before for any event, let alone of this magnitude,” says Georgina Grenon, who is responsible for the games’ environmental efforts.

Critics counter that while much of what Paris is doing is commendable, especially its restrictions on new construction, truly tackling the climate crisis will require more than just cutting emissions here and there. “We need to fundamentally rethink these massive mega-events,” said Cesar Dugast, co-founder of a climate analysis group called Eclaircies. “Instead of concentrating all events in one city, consider spreading them around the world.”

There is a more immediate risk to the Olympics: climate change itself. Rising global temperatures are making summers dangerously hot in Paris. That has heightened concerns about the protection of athletes and fans in late July and August.

City officials say they have planted thousands of trees in recent years to temper the summer heat. They set up misting towers to spray the air. Wide parasols are being sought under which fans can wait. “We have solutions. We are preparing,” said Dan Lert, the deputy mayor responsible for preparing the city for heat. “It’s a big test.”

One key thing that sets the Paris Games apart from previous Olympics is that there is a limit on the total emissions they will produce. The goal: to generate no more than half of the greenhouse gas emissions from the 2012 Olympic Games, which were held in London.

London was chosen as the benchmark because the organizers also wanted to reduce emissions there and measured them. Estimates like these are based on standard measurements of, for example, how much carbon dioxide is produced by the amount of cement used in new buildings.

Paris organizers say they will offset these emissions by purchasing “carbon credits” to help finance emissions-reducing projects worldwide. The games’ organizers have not said which projects will fund the games and at what price. Either way, the carbon credit market can be murky, with some projects failing to deliver on their promise.

What Paris is doing shows what can be done to redesign an old city for a new global climate. It also shows where the boundaries are.

The Place de la Concorde, an 18th-century square where guillotines were once erected during the French Revolution, will be home to Olympic events such as skateboarding this summer.

The square now also features a modest metal box, designed to stimulate an electricity revolution. It contains a powerful socket connected to the national electricity grid, allowing any major event on the square to throw off the diesel buoys.

Diesel generators are the dirty secret of sporting events. Usually they are transported by truck to provide a stable power source.

The Paris Games also struck a special deal with the electricity company, which stipulates that there must be enough wind and solar energy on the grid to produce all the energy the games consume.

When it comes to emissions, transportation is another issue. Paris has already limited space for cars and made room for bicycles, and is using the games to accelerate that shift.

But the Olympics, with their huge crowds, threaten to cause problems for the way Parisians get around their city, with many making plans to flee for holiday.

Pierre Rabadan, a former professional rugby player and now deputy mayor for sport of Paris, lifted his shoulders into the wind and walked briskly out of the tram stop in front of the city’s new basketball arena at the top of Rue de la Chapelle. He pointed to a nearly finished bike lane along the road, carved into a wide boulevard dedicated to cars.

Since the election of Anne Hidalgo as mayor in 2014, Paris has built around 600 kilometers of cycle paths. About 10 percent have been named Olympistes, a play on “piste,” the French word for number.

“The problem is that we built the city around cars,” Mr. Rabadan said.

Another problem is that the city’s subway system is bursting at the seams. Trains are already overcrowded and workers are rushing to complete new extensions of two lines in time to serve the games.

To make room for Olympic visitors, the city has called on people to stay off the train or work from home.

The key to the organisers’ climate strategy is to build as little as possible, which is why they are using a relic from the 1924 Olympic Games in Paris: the Georges Vallerey swimming pool.

It will have a new air filtration system and a new roof that lets in light but keeps out heat and cold. Old wooden roof beams have been reused as worktops. The wooden stands, installed at least 40 years ago, are still in place. Solid plaster walls reveal the age of the pool.

“We don’t have to throw everything away or destroy everything and throw it in the trash,” Mr. Rabadan said.

The swimming pool contains history. It is the place where Johnny Weissmuller, an American swimmer, won a gold medal in 1924. He went on to play Tarzan in a series of Hollywood films, Mr. Rabadan is keen to point out.

About 95 percent of the venues that will be used for the 2024 Games will be old buildings or temporary structures. For example, several temporary pools will be built for the games, then taken apart and reinstalled in communities with a shortage of public pools.

The Olympics, Ms. Grenon said, provide “a laboratory,” especially when it comes to the buildings designed from scratch.

A new aquatic center, on the edge of a highway in the northern suburb of Saint-Denis, is a showpiece of Douglas fir and pine. The 5,000 square meter roof curves like a wave: the architects designed it to reduce the size of the building, requiring less energy to heat the space.

The pool is only 5 meters deep where necessary to provide more depth for diving, and shallower where not. This also saves water and energy needed to heat the water. Some of that heat will come from a nearby data center. The hall’s 5,000 seats are made of recycled plastic.

The goal, said Cécilia Gross, one of the architects, was “to do better with less.”

The largest new Olympic project is being built nearby: the 128-hectare Athletes Village complex, which will then turn into a mixed-use neighborhood for 6,000 residents. The builders say emissions are at least 30 percent lower than conventional projects of this size.

Wood also plays a leading role here. The village is a cluster of mainly wooden buildings.

Although wood comes with its own environmental costs depending on how it is grown, it is considered much more sustainable than concrete.

In the village, a small section of sidewalk is paved with oyster shells that can be watered from an underground reservoir and cool the sidewalk on hot days. One experimental building will recycle all the water. To cool the site, 9,000 trees have been planted, including local species such as oak and elm that can survive in a warmer future.

Then there is the unconventional air conditioning.

A network of pipes, using water that is first cooled underground, will cool the interior of the buildings using a technology known as a geo-exchange system. In New York City, St. Patrick’s Cathedral uses something similar, but with air instead of water. A small number of American universities are also switching to geo-exchange.

Along with shade trees, insulation and breezes from the river, builders say indoor temperatures can be kept cool enough for Parisian summers of the future. However, Games organizers say Olympic teams are still free to bring their own air conditioners.

The United States, Canada and Norway said they would. Australia And Ireland according to press reports too. The Mayor, Mrs Hidalgo, in an interview with Reutersurged teams to “trust the science.”
