Reunion marks victory for conservation!

Nature conservation: In an exciting wildlife rescue operation, a female leopard cub was successfully reunited with its mother after she was found near a sugarcane field in Waghale village, located in the Shirur Forest Range of Maharashtra. The cub, estimated to be almost two months old, was discovered by a vigilant farmer who immediately notified forest rangers, setting off a chain of events that led to the cub’s rescue, treatment and eventual reunion by Wildlife SOS and Junnar forest department.

During the sugarcane harvest season, the meowing of leopard cubs in the fields is a common sound. In a recent incident that occurred in Waghale village on Sunday, a female leopard cub was found in distress in a sugarcane field. The farmer, realizing the need for immediate intervention, contacted the Maharashtra Forest Department, which quickly responded to the call for help.

After being informed by the forest department officials, the teams of Wildlife SOS and Junnar forest division, along with the veterinarians, traveled nearly 70 km to reach the rescue site. After an extensive health assessment, the team identified the cub as a female, almost 2 months old, with minor wounds and scratches on her paws. In addition, she showed signs of dullness and dehydration.

Dr. Sharing insights into the cub’s treatment, Adithyan N, Wildlife SOS Veterinary Officer said: “We focused on providing the cub with the necessary medical care, including fluid therapy to address dehydration and ointments in the form of topical medication for the wounds. After ensuring her good health, we carefully placed the cub in a safe box and immediately started the reunion process.”

Camera traps were strategically deployed in the area to closely monitor the reunification process. To the joy and relief of all involved, the mother leopard appeared that same evening. After assessing the area, she approached the crate, identified her cub and gently lifted her by the scruff of the neck. The heartwarming moment was caught on camera and the pair retreated into the wilderness, marking a successful reunion.

Amit Bhise, Assistant Conservator of Forests, Junnar Division said, “We are happy that the joint efforts resulted in the timely treatment and successful reunion of the cub with its mother. As it is the sugarcane harvesting season, we urge all farmers to inform local forest rangers if they see leopard cubs. This will ensure the well-being of the cub and its return to the wild.”

Kartick Satyanarayan, co-founder and CEO of Wildlife SOS said, “The quick initial response of the local farmer and the subsequent efforts of Wildlife SOS and the forest department show the impact of joint efforts. Each reunion contributes to a healthy leopard population in the wild and plays a crucial role in maintaining the delicate ecological balance in the natural environment of that area.”

Male elephant seals are not known for their paternal instincts. While on the beach during breeding season, these far from gentle giants concentrate on mating with females and fighting other males. As they drive their two tons of mass through the colony in pursuit of these goals, “they will run over pups without hesitation and even crush their own offspring,” says Daniel Costa, an ecologist at the University of California, Santa Cruz.

That made the events of January 27, 2022 all the more striking. Sarah Allen and Matthew Lau, wildlife biologists with the National Park Service, were surveying the northern elephant seal population at Point Reyes National Seashore, about 30 miles (48 kilometers) northwest of San Francisco. As they walked past a colony lying on the beach, they saw a young pup resting with an adult female close to the water.

“It was a hot day,” Dr. Allen recalled, so she thought the two were cooling off on the wet sand.

When Dr. Allen and Mr. Lau passed the colony again on the way back, the situation had changed. The rising tide had pulled the pup out to sea and because he was too young to swim, he struggled to stay afloat. Still on the beach, the female responded to the pup's plaintive cries with her own, which attracted the attention of a nearby male.

“We thought, oh, he's going to try to mate with her,” said Dr. All.

Instead, he sniffed the female and then “charged into the surf,” she added. When he reached the pup, he used his body to gently push him back to the beach – probably saving his life.

Dr. Allen has been observing elephant seals for more than 40 years and had never seen anything like it. “I reached out to some colleagues asking if they had seen anything like this, but no one had,” she said. Dr. Costa agreed: “It's completely unusual.”

Dr. Allen and her colleagues published their observation in January in the journal Marine Mammal Science. Dr. Costa said the article could encourage other seal scientists to be on the lookout for similar behavior.

Northern elephant seals are fast during the breeding season (roughly December to March), so males normally try to conserve their energy for mating and fending off rivals. By running around the beach like David Hasselhoff in “Baywatch,” this lifeguard of a seal not only abandoned his harem of females, but also used up valuable energy.

This brought Dr. Allen to interpret what she saw as potential act of altruismwhen one organism sacrifices part of its own well-being to help another.

“He was so determined and directive when he went out there, and so fast,” she said. “And when he came back in, he was so gentle.”

Although the male clearly intended to push the pup back to shore, it is impossible to fully understand his intentions in doing so. And since this is the first time anyone has seen anything like this in elephant seals, Dr. Costa that it was a rare one-time behavior.

Altruism in the animal kingdom is most common between relatives, and because elephant seals were hunted to near-extinction and then revived in the 19th century, many of them are more closely related than would otherwise be the case. Dr. Allen suspects the male seal and the pup he rescued are related in some way, but without genetic data she can't say for sure.

Elephant seals lead an extreme life. When they're not on the beach fasting, fighting and reproducing, they are spend months at sea continuously diving for food – sometimes as deep as a mile deep. “Elephant seals are complicated,” said Dr. All. “We only see a small part of their lives.” She thinks it's time we look at male elephant seals in a new light.

Dr. Costa had thought that elephant seals generally did not have this brainpower of their sea lion cousins. But the dramatic beach rescue at Point Reyes showed him that there may be more to the story than meets the eye.

“Maybe there's more going on up there than I thought,” he said, laughing.

Leopard cub, mother reunited: In an exciting wildlife rescue operation, a leopard cub was successfully reunited with its mother after being found near a sugarcane field in Nagapur, located in the Manchar Forest Range. The cub, about one and a half months old, was discovered by an alert farmer who immediately reported the sighting to the forest department, setting off a chain of events that led to the cub’s rescue, treatment and eventual reunion.

The incident took place in Nagapur where a female leopard cub was found near a sugarcane field, injured and in distress. The farmer, realizing the need for immediate intervention, contacted the Maharashtra Forest Department, which quickly responded to the call for help. The leopard cub was transported to the Manikdoh Leopard Rescue Center – jointly managed by Wildlife SOS and the Maharashtra Forest Department – for a comprehensive health assessment and treatment.

Wildlife SOS veterinarians at the sanctuary identified the cub as a female, approximately 45 days old, with minor wounds and scratches on her paws. In addition, she showed signs of dullness and dehydration. Laser therapy was also performed on the wounds and ointments were applied to aid the healing process.

After a day of attentive care, the leopard cub, now in improved health, was deemed ready for the crucial step of being reunited with her mother. She was carefully placed in a secure box in the field where she was initially found. Camera traps were strategically deployed in the area to closely monitor the reunification process. To the joy and relief of all involved, the mother leopard appeared within an hour. She approached the crate, looked at her cub and, without hesitation, gently picked her up by the scruff of the neck. The pair retreated into the surrounding wilderness, marking a successful reunion.

Dr. Sharing insights into the treatment process, Akhilesh Dhage, veterinary officer at Wildlife SOS, said: “We focused on providing the cub with the necessary medical care, including fluid therapy to address dehydration and laser therapy for her wounds. In one of the most recent attacks, a homeowner and his dog were injured by a mother bear who was with her cub.

“It’s beyond a nuisance,” former Sierra Madre mayor Glenn Lambdin said in an interview with KTLA.

“And it has already gone into the danger zones. I think we are on a time bomb that is going to explode and we don’t know when,” Lambdin said.
