Dear Jane,

My mother spent years preparing me to become my brother’s “pseudo-mother” after she died, and I find it very difficult to carry the burden of this job – which I never wanted in the first place.

My brother is seven years older than me and has been bullying me for years. As we were growing up, he attacked me physically and verbally, and the insults continued into my 40s, although he stopped the physical torment when we reached our teenage years.

But throughout our childhood, my mother insisted that I had to be a better sister to him. That I had to make sure he was taken care of – and that she let me cook and clean with her, because she said it was our responsibility to take care of the “men of the house.”

As we got older and moved out of our parents’ house, we would go back for dinner once a week and it would be the same. My mother and I cook, my brother and father sit and watch TV.

Dear Jane, My mother made me become my brother’s “pseudo-mother” when she died – and now he expects me to do all his cooking and cleaning and pay his bills

When my father passed away, my mother focused all her energy – and mine – on my brother, insisting that I offer to pick up groceries for him, that I pick up his dry cleaning… and for whatever damn reason I have done .

A few years ago our mother became ill, and it was I who took on all the responsibility of arranging her care, resolving issues with her health insurance, and making sure she had a nurse to care for her when I couldn’t .

When she died, he moved into her house – which she left to both of us in her will. But he refuses to take care of it or maintain it, insisting that that is my job.

It stinks of damp, the floors are filthy, there are leaks in the roof… and he does nothing about it, just tells me to hire professionals to get in. He also told me to make myself available to clean it for him. once a week because “we both own it.”

I told him I will pay 50/50 for the cost of having the more serious damage repaired, but he refused. He has also refused to help clear out our mother’s things, cruelly saying that if he dies, I can clear out her things and his at once, which is just too depressing a thought to manage.

I already take care of paying his utility bills and arranging his insurance, and I’m at my limit with what else I can do.

I feel the weight of this obligation every day – but I would feel so guilty if I just stopped doing all the things I do because I really don’t know if he would succeed?

I don’t know what to do.

By,

My brother’s keeper

Dear guardian of my brother,

We don’t live in the 1950s anymore, and unless your brother has a disability that requires a significant amount of assistance, you should quit your job as your brother’s indentured servant.

I know how hard this is because, as you say, you are trained. But your teaching was wrong, and you have no responsibility to care for and pay for a grown man who—unless something is missing from your letter—is perfectly capable of taking care of himself.

He can tell you he isn’t. You may think he isn’t, but what you do to carry on your mother’s tradition enables him; he can stay a kid, let the women in his life pay for him and do everything for him, as long as you keep doing that.

If he really isn’t able to care for himself, and it’s unclear why that’s the case other than the fact that people have always done it for him, then the two of you can find a part-time caregiver who can help cover the costs. pay. bills and taking care of household things.

Not only are you giving up your life for him, you’re keeping him from living a full life.

Please find a therapist who can work through these issues, to get to the core of this codependency, to give you the tools to live a full life of your own.

IMAGINE being trapped in a highly advanced, ‘sterile and cold’ tin can in Earth’s orbit, 250 miles above home.

That’s the reality of astronauts who embark on missions to the International Space Station (ISS), often for at least six months at a time.

Living in such an artificial environment can weigh heavily on the psyche. Therefore, astronauts are specifically chosen because they do not have mental health problems.

But anyone who works in such a small space, so far from home, is likely to encounter a few.

Fortunately, astronaut Andreas Mogensen had been tasked by the European Space Agency (ESA) to test a new gadget to combat this.

I hear the rustling of the leaves, I hear the birds singing, I can almost feel the warmth of the sun.

Andreas Mogensen, European Space Agency

Mogensen, part of Crew-7 that just returned to Earth, was tasked with conducting two experiments using a virtual reality (VR) headset during his six-month mission to the ISS.

Experiment one

First, the Danish astronaut tested how VR can promote the mental health of astronauts while in space for extended periods of time.

“We astronauts on board the space station live in a very confined, artificial, laboratory-like environment, it’s very sterile, it’s very cold and we don’t have access to nature and that affects our psychological well-being,” Mogensen explains.

“Personally, I really miss going outside and feeling the wind… and even though the virtual reality headset doesn’t allow me to do that, I still get the feeling of being in nature when I wear it.”

The headset comes preloaded with at least four natural scenes, including a sunset, the beach, a mountain path and a river.

“When I put on the virtual reality headset, I hear the rustling of the leaves, I hear the birds singing and I can almost feel the warmth of the sun,” Mogensen describes.

“I have to be honest: I didn’t expect it to make a big difference, but I have found that I enjoy wearing this headset.”

The headset was built by XRHealth, a healthcare spatial computing company, in collaboration with Nord-Space Aps and HTC VIVE to be compatible with microgravity.

The handy gadget flew to the ISS together with Crew-7 in November and was tested during the six-month mission.

“It feels like I’m outside the space station, that I’m away from this artificial environment and it really de-stresses me, it makes me relaxed, it takes away a lot of the daily stress and allows me to calm down again come. get energy… and catch my breath and feel like I’m back on earth,” Mogensen added.

“For long-duration missions it makes a huge difference.”

Experiment two

The second experiment Mogensen conducted was combining the headset with the exercise bike on board the ISS, known as CEVIS.

ISS astronauts spend an average of two hours a day exercising to limit the harmful effects of space on the human body.

When the headset is combined with the exercise bike, astronauts can cycle one of five different routes in Denmark, such as the forest, the beach, the countryside, Copenhagen and the country’s third largest city, Odense.

Routes in the headset are integrated into the bike, so when astronauts go uphill in VR, they have to press harder on the bike for extra realism.

“It’s so motivating,” says Mogensen, adding that “at the same time I feel like I’m in nature and enjoying a nice bike route through the forest or along the beach.”

Mogensen said during the experiments the headset had become “one of my favorite things” to do aboard the ISS.

It’s the first time a virtual reality headset has been sent into space and is being tested for its effectiveness in treating the mental health issues astronauts experience.

Per Lundahl Thomsen, chief technology officer at Nord-Space Aps, said creating a virtual platform will help astronauts combat the negative feelings that come from being so far away from friends and family.

This can be especially difficult for those who miss anniversaries, life milestones, and holidays.

With more support in space, Thomsen believes astronauts will be better able to maintain a healthy lifestyle when they eventually return home.

An influencer has sparked outrage online after apparently using a live crab in a photo shoot.

Images circulating on social media show a crab hanging in the air while being used in a photo shoot.

In the video, shared to Instagram, an apparently live crab can be seen dangling by its claw from a model’s shoe.

A photographer using professional equipment is seen crouching on the side of the road to take pictures of the crustacean hanging from the shoe.

The crab then falls to the ground with its claw stuck to the shoe and scurries away to the side of the sidewalk.

The model is then seen standing upright as the photographer walks over and uses his own foot to loosen the crab’s discarded claw from the shoe.

The influencer can be heard apparently saying “oh my God” repeatedly as the photos are taken, and squeaking after the claw is released.

Crabs can naturally release their own claws in response to stress, danger or injury as a defense mechanism, and can regrow their claws.

The video has sparked outrage on social media, with many labeling the apparent use of a live crab in the photoshoot as “cruel” and “disgusting.”

They accused the pair – whose identities are not known – of ‘animal cruelty’ and angrily said: ‘Humans are disgusting in their disrespect for other beings’.

The mum, who is known online as ‘the midlife mum’ and is from South East London, explained that she would much rather go on a spa holiday but that the cheap hotel room was much more affordable at just £39.

So if parenthood is stressing you out and you never find the time to relax, listen up.

Alison, a freelance writer, author and host of the Not Another Mummy podcast, showed off her hotel stay on Instagram: “I don’t know about you, but every now and then I need a break from mum life.

“But unfortunately at the moment my budget doesn’t extend to a spa holiday so I headed to the local Travelodge.

“Highly recommended for all exhausted parents who need some time for themselves!”

As we saw Alison enter her hotel room, she asked her followers: “Would you judge me if I told you I booked a stay at my local Travelodge just to escape my kids for one night?”

The mum was then seen jumping onto the hotel bed as she added: ‘I mean, I love a spa holiday but unfortunately I can’t afford one.

“So for just £39 I got a quiet evening away watching Netflix and eating snacks without any interruptions.”

Alison was clearly having a good time as she put on a face mask, changed into her pajamas and started reading her book.

She then continued: “I brought along a chic candle, some sleepy tea and a face mask to really pamper myself.

I’m childfree and don’t date people with children – cruel trolls tell me I have no purpose but I’m actually winning in life

“It was the perfect way to recharge my batteries.

“What do you think though? Would you try the same?”

The social media video, which was posted under the username @iamalisonperryhas clearly left many open-mouthed, as at the time of writing the clip had quickly amassed 1,087 likes after being live for just seven hours.

‘Brilliant idea’

Many parents used the comments to share their thoughts, while other busy mums admitted they had thought about it before too.

One person said: “No judgement, just praise, you absolute legend.

“I tried and tested this and I can confirm that I felt ten times better the next day.”

Another added: “I always fantasized about doing this when the kids were little!”

A third commented: “Brilliant idea. Also a great choice of books and candles and I love the PJs.

“Winning at life.”

While another parent admitted: “I’ve thought about doing this so many times!!”

Gangs attacked Haiti’s largest prison on Saturday evening and allowed prisoners to escape, according to local police unions and a lawyer for some of the prisoners. than two years.

While details of the attack remained unclear, at least two of the country’s police unions took to social media on Saturday asking all police officers to report to the national prison in Port-au-Prince, the capital, to get the situation under control help keep and prevent the attack. prisoners cannot escape.

“If we let gangs take over the prison, we are done,” says the national police union SNPH-17 said in a post on X. “No one will be spared in the capital.”

Haiti’s national prison – with almost 4,000 prisoners built to hold just 800 – has several high-profile prisoners, such as the Colombian commandos accused of being part of the group that assassinated Haiti’s president Jovenel Moïse in 2021.

A Haitian lawyer for some of the soldiers accused of the killing, Samuel Madistin, told The New York Times that he had spoken to his clients who said the national prison was nearly empty of inmates. Only those too old or disabled to flee and those accused of Moïse’s murder stayed behind, Mr. Madistin said, for fear of being hunted if they left prison.

Videos circulating on social media on Sunday appeared to show journalists wandering through parts of the national prison where virtually no inmates were present.

Lionel Lazarre, coordinator of the National Union of Haitian Police Officers, told The Times that both the prison and a second prison in Port-au-Prince, the Croix-des-Bouquets Civil Prison, were attacked on Saturday and that some prisoners had escaped. , but it was unclear how much.

Mr Lazarre added that heavy gunfire had broken out in the prison but that police had regained control on Sunday.

“The attack was obvious,” Mr. Lazarre said, adding that gang members did not try to hide their plans to lock down the prison. “There is a lack of concern among police authorities who have not taken these reports seriously or taken enough measures to strengthen security.”

Commissioner Ernst Dorfeuille, a senior police official responsible for operations in Port-au-Prince, said the internet was down and so it was difficult to get a situation assessment. Still, he thought most of the prisoners had escaped: “I don’t think there’s a prisoner down there anymore,” he said, adding: “The gangs came together so the attack force was in their favor.”

The Haitian government has not commented on the episode.

Haiti has entered a state of extreme unrest after Mr Moïse’s murder led to widespread gang violence and a near-complete collapse of security. According to police figures, out of a force of approximately 15,000 officers, almost 3,000 police officers have left their posts in the past two years.

The country has no president or other elected national officials, and gangs – who have taken control of much of Port-au-Prince – terrorize thousands of people every day. At least 5,000 people were murdered in Haiti last year, according to the United Nations.

Violence in the country escalated last week after Prime Minister Ariel Henry traveled to Kenya to finalize a deal under which that country would send a thousand police officers to help restore order in Haiti.

The attack on the prison is part of a wave of attacks carried out by armed gangs in recent days while Haiti’s prime minister was out of the country. The goal, according to Jimmy Chérizier, a gang leader known as Barbecue, is to overthrow what is left of the government.

On Thursday, Mr. Chérizier said in a video message: “With our weapons and with the Haitian people, we will liberate the country.”

It is unclear whether an international police force led by Kenya, which has drawn criticism from human rights groups, could help curb the violence. The recent attacks are a clear show of violence in the gang-ridden country, experts say.

“The gangs seem to be sending a message of intimidation to the troops about to be deployed in Haiti, saying, ‘Well, we’re a united front and we can attack at the same time,’” said Diego Da Rin, a Haiti expert at the International Crisis group.

Romain Le Cour, a security analyst at the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organized Crime, said: “It is, frankly, a situation where you have absolute absence and silence of the state,” adding that some of the violence was likely planned for weeks, while some were spontaneous.

Although authorities in Haiti have been losing ground for years, Mr. Le Cour said, recent days have shown that the armed gangs have achieved a “critical shift” in the balance of power.

“It’s probably one of the first times you’ve had these targeted, targeted attacks. It’s not like it used to be,” he added. “Now they just go for it.”

André Paultre reported from Port-au-Prince, Emiliano Rodriguez Mega from Mexico City and David C Adams from Miami.

Ruthie (@ruthyandthebrain) filmed herself discussing the fiasco in a video on TikTok.

“I literally jumped out of a moving car because I was on a date, okay?” she said.

“When I told you, I didn’t even wait for this man to stop.

“He was over an hour late for our date. Over an hour late, a two hour date. I should have known then to just cancel because you’re not respecting my time,” she added .

She said she “overlooked” the lateness because they had known each other since high school and Los Angeles is known for heavy traffic.

“He picks me up over an hour late, and when I get in the car we hug.

“‘Hey, nice to see you. I haven’t seen you in a while. Good to see you,’ right? And then I let him know, ‘Hey, you’re an hour late. Next time, please don’t.’ Show up so late because I’m not going on a date.’

“I was resolute. I wasn’t ab***h. I wasn’t condescending, I wasn’t shouting. I wasn’t aggressive. None of that.

“I just wanted to let him know that I am a very punctual person. My time is valuable to me,” she added.

She said her date didn’t take too kindly to her honest request.

My date made me go to his doctor’s appointment – his phone activity and ‘sock subscription’ on the drive home made it worse

“This man turned his car around,” she said.

“Like, ‘I’m taking you back home, who do you think you’re telling me I can’t be late to take you to a date? I drove 30 minutes to pick you up and I paid for these tickets ‘,’ she added.

She had a warning for others who were looking for love in the wrong places.

“Never date the person you’ve been chasing, that you’ve wanted for a long time, because they’re usually crazy,” she said.

“I jumped out of a half-moving car tonight because I couldn’t get away from this man fast enough.

“And I left his door fucking wide open,” she added, saying he also “got away” from the scene.

She added her thoughts on why her date behaved the way he did towards her.

“I feel like because he didn’t have access to me for over twenty years, when he finally got the chance, he wanted to show me who’s boss,” okay?

She said he had been trying to date her for 20 years

In November, a 10-year-old boy was mercilessly killed by a monkey after it ripped out his intestines during an attack that took place near a temple in India.

Police said the boy, identified as Dipak Thakor, was killed by a “notorious gang” of monkeys while he and his friends were playing near a temple in Salki, a small village in the western state of Gujarat.

He and his friends were attacked and a monkey managed to dig its claws into him before killing him.

Although he was taken to hospital, he tragically died before doctors could treat him.

'His intestine was torn out during the attack. He rushed to his home and was taken to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead on arrival,” an official told local media.

The official added that this was the monkey gang's third attack that week alone.

In March last year, a 70-year-old woman in southern India died after being attacked by a pack of rampaging monkeys while on her way to the bathroom.

Chataraboina Narsavva was at home in her village in Telangana's Kamareddy state when the aggressive creatures attacked her.

The pensioner, who lived with her daughter in Ramareddy village, was alone at the time of the attack.

Her daughter, who had been away for a wedding, later rushed her mother to hospital, where she died from her injuries.

Instead of being mauled by the animals, police said Narsavva slipped and hit her head on the ground, the Times of India reported.

She suffered the injuries that later killed her when she tried to escape the gang of monkeys, a local police inspector said.

Former President Donald J. Trump continued his aggressive attacks on Nikki Haley on Saturday, insinuating at a rally in South Carolina that her husband, a National Guardsman, left for a mission to escape her.

'What happened to her husband? Where is he?” Mr. Trump told a crowd in Conway, S.C., “He's gone.”

He then paused for a moment before adding suggestively, “He knew. He knew it.”

Mr. Trump's comments, made in Ms. Haley's home state two weeks before the Republican primaries, mark a stark turn in an escalating barrage of attacks on her as he aims to knock her out of contention in the Republican primary. primaries. While he has criticized Ms. Haley's political views for weeks and made vague statements claiming she lacks a presidential temperament, he has refrained from making specific personal smears.

Later in his speech in South Carolina, Mr. Trump — who has called Ms. Haley “birdbrain” for months without offering an explanation — called her “brain dead” as he criticized her standing in the national polls.

Ms. Haley's campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment, but she did posted a response to X that referred to the absence of her husband, Michael, from the campaign trail.

“Michael is being deployed to serve our country, something you know nothing about. Someone who continually disrespects the sacrifices of military families has nothing to do with being commander in chief,” she wrote.

Mrs. Haley's husband is currently serving a voluntary, year-long deployment in Africa, which began last June. He is stationed at Camp Lemonnier, a sprawling military base in Djibouti. Trump's comments followed increased attention to the issue among right-wing media personalities who support the former president.

Although currently abroad, Mr. Haley has been a frequent presence in Ms. Haley's messages in her bid for the nomination. In her stump speech, she describes him as one of her reasons for running, often describing his struggles after returning from a war zone and suggesting that his work has informed her views on foreign policy and immigration.

“The other candidates sit there and say I'm a warmonger,” she said last year at a community center in Treynor, Iowa, where a restored U.S. Army helicopter hangs as a tribute to the 114th Aviation Company in Vinh Long, South Vietnam . “Are you kidding me? My husband is in the military. The last thing I want him to do is go fight. This is about preventing war. We should always strive to prevent war.”

In interviews with voters in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, Mr. Haley has often emerged organically as a reason for their support. Women and mothers with spouses or children in the military tend to connect with the difficult experience of worrying about their loved ones and rarely seeing them. Retired military officers see her as someone who might better understand their plight.

Both Mrs. Haley and Mr. Trump share, to some extent, their spouses' absence from the campaign trail. Melania Trump, the former first lady, has not accompanied Mr. Trump at events nor been at his side during his court appearances.

Mr Trump's attacks on Ms Haley, the former governor of South Carolina, came as his campaign had for weeks pursued a strategy designed to humiliate her in her home state.

On Saturday, Mr. Trump said again that he only appointed her ambassador to the United Nations to pave the way for her successor, Gov. Henry McMaster, who endorsed Mr. Trump shortly after he began his 2024 campaign.

Ms. Haley has also stepped up her criticism of Mr. Trump, especially as her path to the Republican nomination has narrowed and she has become his only major competitor. She recently attacked Mr. Trump in light of the special counsel's report questioning President Biden's mental acuity over his handling of classified documents.

During campaign stops in South Carolina on Saturday, she doubled down on her urgent calls for Republicans not to overlook Trump's own age and mental challenges, warning without evidence that Democrats appeared to be looking to replace Mr. Biden and that Republicans needed to “wake up.” ,” at.

In Newberry, S.C., her campaign staff handed out mock mental competency worksheets with questions the sheets suggested Mr. Trump and Mr. Biden would fail. Ms. Haley told reporters that she had not taken the test but that she would be happy to do so.

The Haley campaign also paid for a mobile billboard to troll the former president around the Myrtle Beach area, including near his event in Conway.

Mr Trump has also called for cognitive tests for presidential candidates as part of his strategy to attack Mr Biden's mental acuity for months.

On Saturday he turned Ms Haley's attack back on her. “I don't think Nikki would pass the test,” he said. “Not really.”

Maggie Haberman contributed reporting from New York.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Banna Gupta said, “Honourable CM is in the hearts of Jharkhand people. He has said that he will answer all ED's queries as per the deadline set by ED, bring on the deadline. I don't want to comment on ED, everything goes to the people's court, they are the head in the case of democracy. People determine the story about what happens to whom, and why it happens…'

No one is above the law, says Jharkhand Governor

Jharkhand Governor CP Radhakrishnan in Ranchi said no one is above the law and the CM must obey the law. “Like you (the media), we are also waiting for the CM's response. No one is above the law. We must work within the Constitution. We want law and order to be maintained,” the governor said.
