The Alabama Chief Justice Who Invoked God in Deciding the Embryo Case

In an Alabama Supreme Court decision that has rattled reproductive medicine across the country, a majority of the justices said the law was clear that frozen embryos should be considered children: “Unborn children are ‘children.’”

But the court’s chief justice, Tom Parker, drew on more than the Constitution and legal precedent to explain his determination.

“Human life cannot be wrongfully destroyed without incurring the wrath of a holy God,” he wrote in a concurring opinion that invoked the Book of Genesis and the prophet Jeremiah and quoted at length from the writings of 16th- and 17th-century theologians.

“Even before birth,” he added, “all human beings have the image of God, and their lives cannot be destroyed without effacing his glory.”

Just as the case, which centers on wrongful-death claims for frozen embryos that were destroyed in a mishap at a fertility clinic, has reverberated beyond Alabama, so has Justice Parker’s opinion.

His theological digressions showed why he has long been revered by conservative legal groups and anti-abortion activists, and also why he has inspired apprehension among critics who regard him as guided more by religious doctrine than the law.

In a post on social media, Tony Perkins, the president of the conservative Family Research Council, described the opinion as a “beautiful defense of life and the Alabama Constitution.” But critics viewed it as dangerous and deviating from the US Constitution. “Welcome to the theocracy,” wrote a columnist for The Washington Post.

Either way, the opinion was true to form for Justice Parker.

Since he was first elected to the nine-member court in 2004, and in his legal career before it, he has shown no reticence about expressing how his Christian beliefs have profoundly shaped his understanding of the law and his approach to it as a lawyer and judge.

Those beliefs also informed a vision that, his supporters say, made him a dogged and brilliant architect for laying the groundwork that contributed to the US Supreme Court’s decision in 2022 to overturn a federal right to abortion with Dobbs v. Jackson.

In 2022, Matt Clark, the president of the Alabama Center for Law and Liberty, a conservative legal advocacy group, praised Justice Parker for his “courage and relentlessness.” He cited Justice Parker’s writing in past cases as scaffolding for the arguments that successfully challenged Roe v. Wade, which established a constitutional right to abortion and blocks states from banning the procedure before fetal viability, which most experts estimate at about 23 or 24 weeks.

“He picked apart Roe’s logic when it came to viability,” Mr. Clark wrote in an essay published by 1819 News, a conservative digital outlet in Alabama, referring to a concurring opinion in a case related to a wrongful-death lawsuit involving a fetus that was lost before it had reached the point of viability outside the womb.

“Fast-forward nine years later,” Mr. Clark, who later joined Justice Parker’s staff, wrote. “When Mississippi asked the Supreme Court to take Dobbs, one of its major points was how Roe’s viability standard didn’t make any sense. And whose writing did Mississippi draw on multiple times to make that point?”

His sharpest critics have not denied his influence. “What Justice Parker has done is explicitly lay out the road map for overturning Roe v. Wade,” said Lynn Paltrow, the founder and former executive director of the nonprofit Pregnancy Justice, according to an extensive investigation of Justice Parker’s role in the so-called personality movement that was published by ProPublica and The New Republic in 2014.

Before joining the court, Justice Parker was the founding executive director of the Alabama Family Alliance, a conservative advocacy group now called the Alabama Policy Institute. He had also served as an assistant state attorney general to Jeff Sessions, who later became a US senator and former President Donald J. Trump’s attorney general.

He was also a close aide and ally of Roy Moore, the former chief justice of the State Supreme Court who was twice removed from the job — first for dismissing a federal court order to remove an enormous granite monument of the Ten Commandments he had installed in the state judicial building, and then for ordering state judges to defy the US Supreme Court’s decision affirming gay marriage.

Justice Parker, who became chief justice in 2019, is now in his final term on the Supreme Court, having reached the court’s mandatory retirement age of 70.

The 8-to-1 decision last week by the justices, all of whom are Republicans, overturned a lower court’s ruling that frozen embryos were not considered children. The justices found that the couples could pursue a wrongful-death lawsuit against a Mobile fertility clinic over a 2020 episode in which a hospital patient removed frozen embryos from tanks of liquid nitrogen and dropped them on the floor.

Critics argued that the decision stood to have far-reaching consequences. “Justices have crossed a critical boundary to assign personhood to something created in a lab that exists outside of a human body,” the American Civil Liberties Union of Alabama said in a statement.

The majority, in its opinion, cited a 1872 statute that allows parents to sue over the wrongful death of a child and found that “unborn children,” including “extrauterine children,” were included in that.

In his concurring opinion, Justice Parker reached further back, citing Genesis: “The principle itself — that human life is fundamentally distinct from other forms of life and cannot be taken intentionally without justification — has deep roots that reach back to the creation of man ‘ in the image of God.’”

It underscored the philosophy that has guided him through two decades on the court.

“When judges don’t rule in the fear of the Lord, everything’s falling apart,” he once wrote, citing the Book of Psalms, according to the ProPublica investigation. “The whole world is coming unglued.”

Ice ages have not lasted that long.

Kylian Mbappé to Real Madrid… it's been a thing for at least a decade.

The Athletics didn't even exist when the couple started courting each other. Twitter was still fun (and called Twitter), Taylor Swift had never heard of American football, and the closest we came to a global pandemic was watching Contagion.

It has been an unrelentingly long saga, in fact the worst transmission saga of all, with endless posturing, incessant lies and distortions and thousands upon thousands of stories claiming that it is finally happening.

Well, once and for all it certainly is. Mbappe is leaving PSG and you should assume that he will be at the Bernabeu next season (assuming another club doesn't have a chance to beat them and he ends up at Osasuna for example) and the football world can concentrate on other things, such as football matches.

Believe it or not, the best player in the world will not languish in PSG's reserves. He also does not get garden leave. Instead, he will play forever for the club he wanted to play for and Real Madrid will sign the player they wanted to sign forever. Imagine that.

If you think we've had it bad here, try living in Spain, where the coverage is comparable to the kind of coverage we would get for the death of a member of the royal family in Britain.

Since Mbappe did not exercise the option to extend his contract until 2025, things have gotten wild in recent months. There is even talk of a saga within the saga, with Madrid feeling betrayed by Mbappe when he chose to sign his latest extension with PSG. Madrid fans said they would not forgive Mbappe because he wanted to stay with his current employers. To grow up.

A group of ‘Brits’ who serenaded Prince Harry and Meghan Markle by singing ‘God Save The King’ were captured on film as the royal couple put on a united front in their first public appearance since their royal rebrand.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are in the stunning Whistler Blackcomb ski resort in British Columbia for a two-day trip from California to promote next year’s Invictus Games, the first time it will involve winter sports.

The couple, who arrived hand-in-hand yesterday, looked thrilled to be spending Valentine’s Day in Canada – the country where they fell in love – as they ventured out to the mountains followed by a film crew.

As the couple joined an Invictus Games training session to mark a year until the global sporting event, Harry even tried his hand at sit-skiing and quipped before he set off: ‘Do I need to sign a waiver?’

Footage has now emerged of members of the crowd breaking out into a rendition of Britain’s national anthem as Harry, 39, and Meghan, 42, prepared to leave Whistler yesterday afternoon.

As a group of teenagers started bellowing out ‘Long live our noble King! God save the King!’, members of the crowd can be seen chuckling.

Sharing the clip to her Instagram, New York Times best-selling author Elizabeth Holmes wrote: ‘Did not get a clear shot of them getting in the car but I did catch these young Brits singing God Save the King’.

In another clip, the Sussexes smiled and waved before getting into a Jeep, while it appears Harry may have charmed some of the gathering crowds. One skier said: ‘He was very nice’. The prince also poked his head out the window and gave the crowd a final wave which was met with cheers.

Harry and Meghan’s trip comes days after the couple faced a backlash over their new Sussex.com website, while it is also the couple’s first public appearance since the shock news that King Charles is undergoing treatment for cancer.

Just over a week ago, the duke travelled on a ten-hour flight from Los Angeles to London to spend just half an hour with his father in the wake of the monarch’s cancer diagnosis – but Meghan stayed at home with their children Archie and Lilibet.

Archie four, and Lilibet, two, also appear to have stayed at home in Montecito while the Sussexes are away in Whistler.

Harry could not resist trying some of the sports the disabled athletes – who have all served in the military – will be taking part in, with the father-of-two filmed as he had a go at sit-skiing.

Meghan could also not contain her laughter as she snapped a photo of Prince Harry trying the sport out.

In a candid moment, a giddy Meghan is seen borrowing a phone from a friend to film her husband’s attempts. Laughing, the former Suits star then turns to a friend and says ‘oh you have to show them’ as she hands the phone back.

They did not appear affected by the row over their website row – and criticism over their use of the royal links despite their rift with the Windsors and an agreement with the Queen not to use their HRH titles for business purposes or trade off their royal connections.

Yesterday, Meghan praised the ‘talented team’ behind her new Sussex.com website after it was claimed the couple did not consult palace officials in advance.

The Duchess wrote: ‘There is a reason I have worked with Ryan and the talented team at Article for a decade: their attention to detail, their creativity and care, and the thoughtful approach to design as well as to the user experience.

‘They’re not just designers; they are collaborators who elevate your ideas into visual identities. They’re a very special company. Plus they’re Canadian, so I’m a fan.’

Meghan was all smiles and glamour in skinny white jeans and a sweater topped with a beige quilted coat. She was flashing her £140,000 engagement ring. The Duchess has not been seen publicly wearing the glittering band, comprising one huge Botswana diamond and two from Princess Diana ‘s collection, since May 2023.

Harry and Meghan made their way out of the gondola on Whistler’s Blackcomb Mountain shortly after 2.30pm local time and were introduced to three groups of adaptive skiers: one Alpine sit-ski, one standing ski and one group of visually impaired athletes.

Alex Cairns, a sit-skier from Canada, was the first to meet the Sussexes and gave a demonstration of the sport – arriving at the base of the slope to cheers from Harry.

The Whistler games will be the first time that Invictus has featured winter sports.

The couple arrived in Canada on Tuesday and were pictured by DailyMail.com touching down in Vancouver just after noon Pacific time following a two-hour flight from Santa Barbara – the closest airport to their home in Montecito.

Their arrival came on the same day that Meghan announced she had signed a new podcast deal with Lemonada Media after she and Harry parted ways with Spotify.

A convoy of cars collected the famous duo and whisked them away to Whistler where they are due to be on Wednesday and Thursday before they return to Vancouver for an event in the City of Glass on Friday.

The pair are then expected to travel home to California on Friday afternoon to be reunited with their children.

The Duke and Dutchess are currently embroiled in an ongoing row over their rebranded ‘royal’ website Sussex.com – complete with Meghan’s coat of arms – which critics claim is a breach of their promise to the late Queen when they acrimoniously quit front-line royal duties.

Sources now saying the couple did not consult palace officials about using their Sussex titles.

A source close to the couple defended the use of their royal titles, saying: ‘Prince Harry and Meghan are the Duke and Duchess of Sussex. That is a fact. It is their surname and family name.’

Yesterday, Meghan, 42, was forced to put out a statement defending the graphic design company that created the couple’s new website . Harry has also faced criticism over the short amount of time he spent in the UK following his father’s cancer diagnosis.

Experts have said the great Sussex relaunch is underway after poor PR caused by Spare and their Netflix documentary.

Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams told MailOnline: ‘Lemonada isn’t a household name as Spotify, which terminated the Sussexes contract, undoubtedly is.

‘Bill Simmons, Spotify’s head of podcast innovation and monetization, labelled them ‘F*****g Grifters’ and that contract was worth $20million.

‘Lemonada received $8million in ‘Series A funding’ in 2022 and this contract with the Sussexes company Archewell is likely to be worth only a fraction of that with Spotify.

‘Meghan’s sole podcast for Spotify, the 12-episode Archetypes, which examines how women are held back, will be distributed and she will launch a new podcast, though it is unclear when or what she will earn or if Harry will have a role.

‘In 2021 Harry and Meghan made the Time 100 most influential people. It had been expected that their next move would be something spectacular.

‘Would Meghan sign with Dior? Would they have a major coup and join with a top brand? Would she go into politics?

‘Lemonada has been called ‘D-list’. It is small, having been founded in 2019 by two women during the pandemic. Both had lost brothers in tragic circumstances.

‘Meghan signed with the prestigious William Morris Agency in April of last year. Nearly a year later, they’ve produced little more than a lemon.

‘Is this the only result of yesterday’s rebrand when they launched a controversial website? With polls showing their popularity in the States low, Hollywood won’t hold its breath.’

PR expert Sean O’Meara, managing director of Manchester-based agency Essential Content, told MailOnline today: ‘Lemonada doesn’t have anything close to the brand recognition that Spotify has, and Archewell, the couple’s content production brand, had to put in a bit of work to help them move past the Spotify relationship.

‘I think it’s a good partnership for both parties nonetheless. Lemonada gets a high-profile partner, Meghan gets a new platform and a fresh start.

‘What Lemonada lacks in instant name recognition and category leadership, it makes up for in other ways.

‘It’s female-founded, gives a platform to a diverse range of perspectives and from a branding point of view, it’s far more closely aligned with how Meghan wants to be perceived.

‘Lemonada has produced podcasts with the likes of Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Samantha Bee and SuChin Pak, so they’re established with certain audiences already.

‘This includes: The Archewell Foundation, Archewell Productions, patronages, ventures, and organizations which receive the support of the couple, individually and/or together.’

The new-look Sussex.com also made much of Harry’s Invictus Games initiative which returns next year with a snow sports edition in Whistler.

During the trip, the couple will meet competitors from the US, Canada, France, Ukraine and Nigeria, among others, at a training camp in the resort.

One said: ‘They are going to have real trouble with the use of Sussex. It is a royal title and if there is any hint of commercialism about this it will be shut down. It’s just staggering they cannot see how gauche it is.’

Meanwhile, The Daily Mirror reported that the couple did not consult palace officials before launching the new site.

The Sun newspaper also said that Harry faced claims that the crest used was out of date, after he became son of the monarch last year.

Mail columnists Sarah Vine and Andrew Pierce believe the couple should be stripped of their titles to stop them shamelessly profiting off the Royal family.

Without the Royal family, Ms Vine said, Harry would simply be a ‘slightly thick, balding ex-soldier’ while Meghan would be a ‘moderately attractive, not very successful ex-actress’.

GAMERS are thrilled when they discover a genius trick to instantly free up valuable storage space on their PlayStation consoles.

If you have a PS5, there's a simple trick to save huge amounts of storage space.

Typically a PlayStation 5 functions an 825 GB (gigabyte) SSD drive, of which only 667 GB is actually usable.

But that storage space can disappear quickly, especially if you install large games.

In a tips thread posted to Reddit's PlayStation subreddit, a space-saving trick caught the attention of gamers.

One user posted: “Disable auto-recording for trophies – all clips/recordings may blow up internal storage.”

A video is saved every time you earn a PlayStation Trophy (the console's official name for achievements).

This means you can waste storage space on Trophy videos that you will never watch again.

In fact, you may not even realize they are being saved.

A delighted PS5 owner replied: “Bro, I just dumped 21 GB by deleting all my trophy footage. And I turned off auto-capture. You're a god for this one.”

Another said: “I didn't know this was a setting, thanks!”

And someone added: “Holy s***. I used to get them manually deleted every month. Just saved some time!!”

How to save trophy storage space on PS5

It is extremely easy to solve your trophy storage problems.

First go to Settings > Recordings & broadcasts and then choose Automatic recordings.

Go to Trophies and then look under the Video Clips heading.

Change the setting to None and you can prevent clips from being saved.

If you want the best trophies to still be included, you can opt for platinum-only inclusions instead.

Changing this setting will stop you future Trophies are not saved as videos on your console.

But that won't delete existing videos that are already taking up your storage space.

Go to your PlayStation's media and then manually delete the files to free up storage space wasted on trophies.

Pastor accused of cryptocurrency fraud says God told him to do it

A Denver pastor who said God told him to sell cryptocurrency that could not be cashed in is facing criminal charges along with his wife for marketing a digital currency that prosecutors said was “practically worthless” and using the proceeds to support a “lavish organization.” lifestyle.”

The pastor, Eligio Regalado, and his wife, Kaitlyn Regalado, were charged Thursday in a civil complaint filed in Denver District Court by the Colorado Attorney General's Office, Colorado Division of Securities. said in a statement. The agency said the couple created, marketed and sold a cryptocurrency they called INDXcoin through a cryptocurrency exchange, which they also operated.

Prosecutors said the couple, who had no experience exchanging cryptocurrency, marketed INDXcoin to Christians in Denver and raised nearly $3.2 million from more than 300 people who bought it between June 2022 and April 2023. Mr. Regalado and his wife then used the money for themselves, the Colorado Division of Securities said.

Mr. Regalado and Ms. Regalado did not immediately respond to requests for comment on Tuesday. It was unclear whether they had an attorney.

In a video in which the complaint is addressed last week, Mr. Regalado said he did not want investors to get “angry” with prosecutors.

“They have to do this,” he said. “I mean, if you think about this, we sold a cryptocurrency with no clear exit. We did. We took God at his word and sold a cryptocurrency with no clear way out.”

Mr Regalado said investors were unable to withdraw their funds due to issues with the cryptocurrency exchange.

Mr. Regalado also said in the video that he went into the cryptocurrency business because “the Lord” told him to. He said God once came to him in a dream and asked him to do so, and he accepted that he and his wife had spent the money on “a renovation of the house that the Lord had commanded us to do.”

Mr. Regalado said he still hoped investors would get their money back, and that he believed “God is going to work a miracle in the financial industry.”

Commissioner Tung Chan of the Colorado Division of Securities said in a statement that “Mr. Regalado benefited from the trust and faith of his own Christian community.”

“He made them bizarre promises of riches as he sold them essentially worthless cryptocurrencies,” Ms Chan said.

The Colorado attorney general's office declined to comment, citing ongoing litigation.

According to records, Mr. Regalado led Victorious Grace Church. A church website was taken offline on Tuesday. Mr. Regalado also said in the video that “the Lord” told him and his wife in 2021 that they needed to step away from a marketing company they were running to start something “new.”

Of the more than $3 million the couple raised through INDXcoin, Mr. Regalado said he and his wife pocketed about $1.4 million. About $500,000 of the money went to the Internal Revenue Service, and “a few hundred thousand dollars” went to renovate the house.

About nine months ago, Mr. Regalado said, the business “began to fall apart,” adding that he didn't know what he was doing.

“One of two things has happened,” Mr. Regalado said, “One, either I misunderstood God and each of you who prayed and came in, you too, or two, God is still not done with this project and he is about doing something new.”

Prosecutors said they were seeking damages to restore losses to investors. Mr. Regalado said in the video that the couple planned to plead their case, and that their “goal” was for investors to get some of the money back.

“We were glued to our screens and saw children being pulled from the rubble day after day. We are heartbroken by these images,” said the Rev. Munther Isaac, the pastor of the Evangelical Lutheran Christmas Church that founded the daycare. “God is under the rubble in Gaza, this is where we find God now.”

The war began on October 7 in response to Hamas’ surprise attack on Israel, which left about 1,200 dead. As the conflict enters its third month, some of the most ubiquitous images of death and destruction are of dead Palestinian children being pulled from the ruins of Israeli airstrikes. Almost half of Gaza’s 2.2 million residents are children, and about 70 percent of those killed are women and children, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry and the United Nations.

The ministry says about 20,000 Palestinians have been killed since the war began.

Although Gaza is some 70 kilometers from Bethlehem, in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, Palestinians in the city feel this acutely. They worry about family and friends in Gaza and find their own lives restricted – whether it is Israel’s more draconian borders since the start of the war, traffic in and out of the city, the economic fallout of the war, or canceling Christmas celebrations.

Normally Mahmoud Abbas, the president of the Palestinian Authority, and other dignitaries attend the mass, but it is unclear whether that will happen this year.

Within the sacred arches of the church on the edge of Bethlehem’s ancient city are some signs of the holiday; wreaths and red-and-gold ornaments decorate the columns and some church entrances.

“We will avoid music, external ceremonies and outdoor decorations,” said the Rev. Rami Asakrieh, pastor of the Latin Church of St. Catherine of the Nativity. But he added that decorations in the church were important.

The horror of war should not bury the spirit of Jesus, he said recently, as church workers set up a small Christmas tree along one of the hallways. “Despite the circumstances, we must still show that Jesus is the source of happiness and peace in the church.”

For the residents of Bethlehem, the war also had economic resonance.

Tourism represents a significant portion of the area’s revenue, Bethlehem Mayor Hanna Hanania said, especially during the holidays. And no people are coming now.

On average, 1.5 million to two million foreign tourists visit the city of Bethlehem every year. But since the start of the war, the tourism industry has come to a complete standstill, and, Mr Hanania said, “economic life is now paralyzed.”

Rony Fakhouri, a 27-year-old social worker and manager of the Dar Al Majus guest house, said the establishment had lost about 100,000 shekels, or about $27,000, in revenue since the war began.

He said the guesthouse typically sees at least 200 guests between October and mid-January. “Between October 7 and today we have had exactly 12 individuals,” he said.

Mr Fakhouri also works as a night shift manager at another hotel, but he has now lost that job.

“Even during the Covid-19 pandemic, they let me keep my job,” he said. “But this time, because of the war, they let me go.”

“Even if the war ends,” he added, “tourism will not recover immediately.”

For Yousef Al Zuluf, a 22-year-old accountant and fashion designer from Bethlehem, the war in Gaza has hit particularly close to home. His maternal grandparents and aunt lived there.

His grandfather was reluctant to leave his home even after the fighting started because he had been displaced once before. He was about six years old when he moved to Gaza at the time of the Nakba – as Palestinians refer to the displacement of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians during Israel’s declaration of independence in 1948.

“He is about 82 years old,” said Mr Zuluf, “he does not want to start a new life somewhere else.”

The family members eventually left Gaza with their foreign passports, but only after living for weeks with little food and water and barely a place to sleep.

For Pastor Isaac, whose Lutheran church has gained some fame with its rubble-themed manger scene, the focus during this holy season should be on the Israeli bombardment of Gaza, not the cancellation of Christmas festivities.

“We do not see this as a war against Hamas,” he said. “It is a war against the Palestinians.”

He came up with the idea of the altered manger scene as a way to not only mark the birth of Jesus, but also acknowledge the deaths of so many children.

“This is what Christmas looks like now in Palestine: children are killed, homes destroyed and families displaced,” he said of his daycare. “We see the image of Jesus in every child killed in Gaza.”
