A NEW Yorker has said navigating the city’s dating scene is not for the faint of heart.

She tried it, survived and now has stories about dining out there.

TikTok user Taylor had a strange dating experienceCredit: TikTok/paretay

But her second date with a man turned strange when he had doubts about the bill.

After they finished eating, she put her cash contribution on the table, but his next move just gave her the creeps.

As a result, this romance was doomed and there would be no third date.

Taylor Pare (@paretay) has 63,000 followers on TikTok, where she shares her love for “storytimes and spilling tea NYC.”

She shared her unhappy dating story in her after but was aware that it could be controversial.

“I think I just got the plague from the guy I’m seeing,” she said.

But commenters were divided over who was right in this dating scenario.

After her experience, she said the New York dating scene was not for the faint of heart.

She had already been on a few dates with this man, but when the check arrived, “he was acting very unreliable.”

It didn’t seem like he was splashing the money. Although she was willing to pay her half, she still felt that it was cheap.

‘I’m unemployed, he has a lucrative job. He ordered a lot of things from the menu that I can’t eat,” she complained.

Dear Deidre: Understanding the impact of ghosting

But when the bill came, Taylor said he barely acknowledged it.

However, she put down her half, $20. When it looked like he wasn’t paying his share, she said there was no cash left in her bag.

Only then, she said, did he pull out his Platinum American Express card and give her $20 back.

“He should at least give his half after making me buy the second round on the first date. It’s super bland and unappealing,” she said.

But she worried she was being superficial because she thought it was a “deal breaker.”

There was a huge response to her post with over 3,000 comments.

And it was a very lively comments section.

Dating etiquette

Tradition still plays a role in the dating game that still exists, but the rules are changing. Here are some guidelines

Who pays the bill:

  • The person who initiated the date usually pays for both meals
  • If the date is successful, offer to pay for the next one
  • If it reaches a third date, agree to split the bills down the middle for future meetings
  • If your date insists on always paying, that’s their choice, but let them know you’d like to treat them occasionally as well

‘I don’t want anyone who isn’t generous. Generous with his money, time, everything,” said one.

‘It’s cheap, but so are you. The bill was $40, which isn’t a huge amount,” a second person thought.

“If he knows you’re unemployed and is still trying to get you paid, that’s a huge red mark in my opinion,” a third person wrote.

“From day one, I shared every bill with my friend. Taking money out of the equation allowed me to see my attraction more clearly and deeply,” was one viewer’s experience.

“Deal breaker is the unreliable behavior and zero communication,” wrote another.

An Aussie guy gave his puppy the fright of his life after he let out a huge scream when he discovered he had won $1.7 million.

The man from Quakers Hill, in Sydney’s western suburbs, was the only winning Division 1 entry in Lotto Strike draw 5142 on Saturday.

He told The Lott when he discovered his new millionaire status, he let out a loud scream, which scared his puppy, who had been sleeping in his bed.

The man’s girlfriend, who was away for the weekend, only learned of the win on Wednesday when she arrived at The Lott’s headquarters.

“On Tuesday morning I asked her when she was free to go driving because I wanted to surprise her,” the man explained.

“We got in the car and I took her straight to the Lott prize collection office. She was giving me gas the entire ride and asked me where we were going.

‘As soon as we walked out of the elevator, she immediately burst into tears. She just kept crying, and crying, and crying.”

The man from Quakers Hill, northwest Sydney, was the only winning entry from Division 1 in Lotto Strike draw 5142 on Saturday, winning $1,704,523 (stock image)

The man said the $1.7 million would help his family through a difficult time.

“We were going through a rough ride, so this will really help us financially,” he said.

“It will have such a positive impact on our family.”

The man was sitting alone at the breakfast table when he discovered he had won a total of $1,704,523 after initially thinking he had won $100.

“Then I saw I had three numbers and I said, ‘Wow! Five hundred dollars!'” he recalled.

‘It just kept going, and then I saw the fourth song and started shouting, “You beautiful! You beautiful!”

‘My poor dog jumped out of his bed and ran away – my little pup was so scared, but then he got excited.

‘My dog was the first one I told!’

His winning entry was not registered, meaning The Lott officials had to wait for the man to come forward to claim his prize.

The man added that a “series of fortunate events” had led to the huge prize.

“It’s funny because I don’t normally even buy tickets for Lotto Strike draws, but the guy from the news agency recommended it to me and I said, ‘Why not! Give me eight lucky games,'” he recalled.

‘Normally I don’t visit the news agency on Fridays. I always buy my tickets on Saturdays, so it’s funny how it all turned out.”

Jeff Shen, owner of Quakers Court Newsagency, said his team was overjoyed that his news agency had sold another winning Division 1 ticket.

“We were so excited when we heard we had sold a winning Lotto Strike Division One entry, and we couldn’t be happier for the winning man,” he said.

‘We have already decorated our store with balloons and posters and are sharing this great news with our customers.

‘Congratulations to the winning man and we wish him all the best with his prize.’

The man’s winning numbers were 44, 40, 35 and 17.

There are more chances to win big with Oz Lotto offering $30 million, while Thursday’s Powerball has $4 million up for grabs.

He continued: ‘He has now passed away, so this is my tribute to him.’

Director David Leitch also commented on the adorable costar, explaining, “We wanted to bring this additional character into the mix… adding an animal on set is always great.”

Ryan stars alongside Emily Blunt and Hannah Waddingham in this fun action comedy where Ryan’s character finds himself in quite a complicated situation as he teams up with his ex-director Jody, played by Emily, while also trying to solve a crime.

It comes after Ryan revealed he got useful ‘tips’ from Eva and their two daughters ahead of his Oscar appearance for I’m Just Ken on Sunday.

The star discussed taking the stage while talking People at the SXSW Film Festival while discussing the culmination of the prestigious awards ceremony.

“It was amazing,” Ryan told the outlet as he talked about Eva, 50, and their daughters Esmeralda, nine, and Amada, seven.

“It was so fun because they came to the dress rehearsal the day before so they were in the front row,” Ryan continued, adding, “They gave me some tips and some notes, all great notes.”

“They are such a big part of this for me… it was my girl’s interest in Barbie and disinterest in Ken that got me into this in the first place. It was wonderful to have them there in the end.’

During a Q&A with the Hollywood Reporter, he explained that his four-legged sidekick in the film is a nod to Eva's late dog Hugo (pictured in 2010).

A DATING coach has shown that even she is not immune to dating disasters.

Navigating work relationships can be tricky at the best of times, but hers was certainly a difficult one.

She had been in a relationship with a man at work who insisted that “no one should ever know.”

But she was shocked to find out the real reason after he saw her in the office.

Nowadays Dani Coco (@dani.coco1) says she would not tolerate similar behavior.

But she was younger and less sensible in such areas.

She shared her experience in the hope that it might help someone going through similar dating trauma.

And there were plenty of them in the comments on her video.

San Diego Dani shares “dating advice and stories on her TikTok.

“Possibly my most unhinged dating story,” she gushed after.

“So one time I went out with a guy I worked with. It was just one of those offices, and everyone was dating each other,” she said.

“But he was adamant that no one in the office should know.”

The procedure at her workplace was that every arrangement between employees had to be reported in the interest of openness and transparency.

‘He wasn’t my superior, so it wouldn’t have been a problem. But he said no one should ever know,” she added.

Golden Bachelorette fans claim the new lead role and premiere date will be announced soon after discovering the ‘clue’ on Instagram

“Now that I’m that age, with my life experience, I would have said: OK, bye.

“But at that moment I thought: fine, he’s just a private person.”

He tried to justify his position by saying that any knowledge of the relationship would ruin his chances of promotion.

‘I should have run for the hills. I didn’t know any better,” she said.

Even going out for dinner was fraught with intrigue as he insisted they go in separate cars.

“He made me take my car because he didn’t want us to be seen together, which is ridiculous because people knew we were friends.”

But after a few months of dating, things took a turn for the worse and she didn’t see that coming.

“One day I texted him and said we had to do something this weekend.”

That was it. The end. The end. Kaput. She never heard from him again.

“He just stopped texting,” she said.

Back at the office, he gave no explanation, avoided all eye contact and made excuses and trips to avoid bumping into her.

“He wouldn’t answer questions I sent in our team chat and wouldn’t engage with me,” she wrote.

“I was so stunned I couldn’t even be angry. Eventually he quit and we never spoke again.”

Without a chance conversation with mutual friends, she might never have known the true reason behind his behavior.

“They told me that right before he quit, his long-term, long-distance girlfriend moved in with him.

“That was the part that surprised me. Because it wasn’t just that he was an asshole, it was also how far in advance he thought about it,” she said.

Dani’s post brought back memories of dating hell for commenters.

“My fiancé ghosted me after I found out he had a girlfriend of four years and that he lived in my house and drove my car that was registered in my name,” was a horrible experience for a woman.

“I dated a colleague who moved in with his girlfriend who traveled a lot for work. “I only found out through the mailroom guys because he was collecting boxes,” said another.

“Something similar happened to me until I was hanging out with a girl from work and she told me she was pregnant by him,” was one person’s sad story.

“I once dated a man for six months. He came to my house every weekend until the weekend he didn’t come and found out he was getting married to his long-term fiancée that weekend,” was an equally unfortunate experience from a second person.

In a new ad for his re-election campaign, President Biden tries to turn one of his biggest risks as a candidate, his age, into an advantage.

“Look, I’m not a young guy. That’s no secret,” says a smiling Mr. Biden, speaking directly to the camera. “But here’s the deal: I understand how to get things done for the American people.”

The 81-year-old president then lists the accomplishments of his first term, including his handling of the coronavirus pandemic, capping insulin prices for older consumers and passing infrastructure legislation — while contrasting his record with that of former President Donald J Trump, the likely Republican nominee, whom he accuses of taking away “women’s freedom to choose” in reproductive matters.

With a fiery State of the Union address under his belt, Mr. Biden is entering full campaign mode. The new advertisement is the first in a $30 million blitz that will target key battleground states over the next six weeks. Mr. Biden, Vice President Kamala Harris and their spouses are crisscrossing the country organizing political events. And on Saturday, three Democratic groups representing people of color — the AAPI Victory Fund, the Collective PAC and the Latino Victory Fund — are backing Mr. Biden, promising to spend another $30 million to turn out their voters.

Mr. Biden often jokes about his age in small circles. But Americans are more likely to be familiar with his angry comments about a recent special counsel report, which referred to him as a “well-meaning older man with a bad memory.”

The new ad, titled “For You,” represents a shift in tone. Its prominence could appeal to younger voters, whose support Mr. Biden needs to shore up, and it will play on channels popular with a youth demographic, including ESPN, Adult Swim and Comedy Central.

The spot even includes an outtake. After the standard announcement that Mr. Biden has approved the message, an off-camera voice asks him to take another shot.

‘Look, I’m very young, energetic and handsome. What the hell am I doing this for?” Mr. Biden replies with a mischievous grin before the screen goes black.

DEALING with teenagers is not always the easiest.

But one mom has shared the clever tricks she uses to avoid mood swings and get her child to actually like her.

Hannah, from the UK, homeschools her children and regularly shares parenting advice.

Like most mothers of teenagers, she struggles to know what her daughter’s mood will be like, or whether she will like her mother that day.

That’s why she talked about how she does everything she can to make her daughter like her, even if just a little bit.

Taking to social media, the mother-of-three said: “I am a huge SIMP for my teenager.”

“Okay, I really like to do things to get her to like me, as a preventative measure Nice stuff.”

The term simple means someone who is overly submissive and will do anything for affection.

Hannah explained that if this puts her daughter in a bad mood (which is completely normal for teenagers), it isn’t going too far because she has already put her on a high.

Then she’ll like me for a while.

Hannah

The mother said they decided to order take-out pizza that night, and she already knew her daughter would want to eat it upstairs, alone in her room.

“So one of the things I like to do is room service,” she explained.

“This is literally it: I take it to her room, where she likes to eat alone, and of course, room service.

“And then she’ll like me for a while.”

The clever mom had found an easy way to stop the mood swings before they even started.

I got my baby to sleep through the night in three days using my gentle ‘five minute method’ – it changed my life

The mother was then given a plate of pizza and started walking upstairs to take care of room service.

She added: “I also like to clean and tidy her room for her as a surprise when I have time. She is always so grateful because she finds it difficult and I remember really appreciated it when my mother did it for me.”

The clip was posted to her TikTok account @hannahhome teaches has since gone viral with over 23,000 views and 1,000 likes.

People were quick to share their thoughts in the comments section.

One person wrote: “I love this framing! I feel guilty for making it ‘too easy’ for my daughter, but this is such a beautiful way to look at it!”

Another commented: “I do things like this because I would have loved it as a teenager.”

“Me too. I put myself in their shoes and think of what I would have liked as a teenager,” wrote a third.

Meanwhile, a fourth said: “I like making her room look nice. It helps their mood.”

“I love this. Makes kids feel loved,” claimed a fifth.

Someone else added: “Awww it’s not simplistic, it blooms beautifully.”

Ryan Gosling is fanboyed over an interaction with legendary filmmaker Steven Spielberg.

The 43-year-old actor opened up about meeting the 77-year-old Raiders Of The Lost Ark director in which he praised Gosling’s highly anticipated film The Fall Guy, which dropped a trailer months ago.

The two crossed paths at the Golden Globe Awards in Los Angeles in January, when Ryan described the encounter Variety Wednesday: ‘I saw Steven Spielberg walking towards me.

‘I don’t know Steven Spielberg. I thought there was no way he would come and talk to me. And yet he came closer and closer, and then I thought I knew what was going to happen. I’m going to point at him and he says, “Not you, behind you,” so I’m not going to do that.

“Finally I said, ‘Me?’ and he says, “Yes, you.” I say, “I’m sorry, I didn’t think you would come talk to me.” And I stood up and he gave me a hug and said, “I just saw Fall Guy and I loved it.”

The 43-year-old actor opened up about meeting the 77-year-old Raiders Of The Lost Ark director, praising Gosling’s highly anticipated film The Fall Guy (pictured), which dropped a trailer months ago.

Ryan couldn’t believe the directing legend had received so much praise for his latest project and explained how valuable it was.

The actor explained, “As far as I’m concerned, it doesn’t matter what happens anymore.

“Steven Spielberg liked it. That was an all-time moment for me. I’m really excited for people to see it. I think it is a very special film.’

The Fall stars Guy Ryan as Colt Seavers, a stuntman who left the company a year early to focus on both his physical and mental health. He is called upon again when the star of a mega-budget studio film directed by his ex goes missing.

The film also stars Emily Blunt, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Winston Duke, Hannah Waddingham, Teresa Palmer, Stephanie Hsu and Adam Dunn.

The upcoming feature film is based on the 1980s television series of the same name and is directed by John Wick director David Leitch.

Development of the film adaptation of the program initially began in 2010 and Martin Campbell was eyed as director.

The project was later tossed around and it was announced that McG would direct the feature film three years later.

Dwayne Johnson was in negotiations at the time to star in the feature film.

However, both entertainment industry figures left the project, which was picked up by Leitch in 2020, when it was announced that Gosling had signed on to star.

Guy Ritchie was joined by his good friend David Beckham and his wife Jacqui Ainsley at the premiere of his new series The Gentlemen on Tuesday.

The filmmaker walked the red carpet at Theater Royal Drury Lane in London in support of his new Netflix series, based on the 2019 film of the same name.

The 58-year-old man looked dapper in a navy blue blazer which he paired with a white shirt, tan trousers and brown shoes.

He was accompanied by his friend David Beckham, 48, who looked suave in a black suit with a navy tie and a light blue shirt.

The man’s wife, Jacqui, 42, looked trendy in a black blazer and matching mini skirt and tie, which she teamed with a white shirt.

The model also wore a pair of black heels and completed her look for the star-studded event with matching tights.

Guy and David have been friends for many years and are co-owners of The Walmer Castle pub in Notting Hill, which they bought for £3 million.

They also previously went on a boys’ trip to Iceland together and David appeared in Guy’s 2017 film King Arthur: Legend of the Sword.

Earlier this year, David and his wife Victoria spent the night in one of Guy’s £50,000 BBQ tents in what he called an ‘incredible’ experience.

Speaking about his friendship with David on The Graham Norton Show, Guy said: ‘We’re kind of like friends – our kids go to the same school, we drink in the same pub and we go to the same gym and one thing led to another.

He added: “I love him, he’s on the same frequency as me and it made sense for him to be in the movie [King Arthur: Legend of the Sword].’

In The Gentlemen, Theo James plays Eddie who “inherits his father’s extensive estate only to discover” that it is a “weed empire owned by the legendary Mickey Pearson.”

A host of unsavory characters from Britain’s criminal underworld want a piece of Eddie’s operation.

Determined to free his family from their clutches, Eddie tries to make the gangsters play their own game. But as he gets sucked into the world of crime, he begins to find a taste for it.

Speaking about the new production, Guy said: ‘The world of ‘The Gentlemen’ is a bit mine, I’m very happy that with Netflix, Miramax and Moonage we have this opportunity to inhabit it again.

“We look forward to bringing fans back to that world and introducing new characters and their stories, and I’m excited to do so with this extremely talented cast.”

In addition to creating the TV series adaptation, Guy also directed the first two episodes.

The 2019 film starred Matthew McConaughey, Charlie Hunnam, Michelle Dockery, Colin Farrell, Jeremy Strong, Henry Golding and Hugh Grant.

It proved to be a box office success, grossing just over $115 million against a reported budget of $22 million.

In the film version, Mickey Pearson (played by Matthew) was a drug lord trying to sell his profitable marijuana business to a dynasty of billionaires.

Guy Wildenstein, the international art dealer, was found guilty of massive tax fraud in France on Tuesday, the latest twist after years of legal entanglements that have unraveled the secrecy that once surrounded his powerful family dynasty.

Mr. Wildenstein, 78 years old, the French-American patriarch of the family and president of Wildenstein & Co. in New York, was sentenced by the Court of Appeal in Paris to a prison term of four years, half of which was conditional and the other half conditional. to be served under house arrest with an electronic bracelet. The court also ordered him to pay a fine of one million euros, or approximately $1.08 million.

He was accused of hiding significant portions of his family’s art collection and other assets in a maze of trusts and shell companies when his father, Daniel, died in 2001, and after his brother, Alec, died in 2008.

Prosecutors had said he was trying to avoid hundreds of millions of euros in inheritance taxes. That was the case during the trial, which was held in the fall requested a slightly milder prison sentence for Mr. Wildenstein, but they also asked for a much higher fine of €250 million, or about $270 million.

The Wildensteins, a family of French art dealers spanning five generations, were historically secretive about the exact details of their collection, which included works by Caravaggio, Fragonard, and many other leading artists.

Prosecutors said the family was responsible for “the longest and most sophisticated tax fraud” in modern French history, hiding art and other assets under complex foreign trusts and shielding works of art worth millions of dollars in tax havens. By doing so, prosecutors said, the family grossly underestimated its vast wealth when it came time to pay estate taxes.

The Wildenstein family’s defense was that they did not have to disclose artworks to the tax authorities if they were technically owned by trusts and not by the family itself.

But the court disagreed, saying the family was responsible for a fraud of virtually unprecedented “magnitude” and “sophistication.”

Pascale Cladiere, one of the court’s three judges who read the verdict, said Wildenstein had “knowingly” underestimated his wealth and “systematically opted for opacity.”

“He presented himself as an art dealer who could not understand the legal consequences at stake,” Mr. Cladiere said. “The evidence shows the opposite,” he added.

Mr Wildenstein had previously been acquitted of tax fraud and money laundering in 2017. An acquittal was subsequently upheld by a higher court.

At the time, judges had ruled that the family had shown clear intentions to hide its wealth, but that its actions had either exceeded the statute of limitations or fallen into a legal gray area, before France passed a law in 2011 requiring foreign trusts to be protected. declared to the authorities.

But in 2021, Mr. Wildenstein’s acquittal occurred in a stunning reversal overturned by France’s highest court of appealwhich ordered the latest trial and sought clarification as to whether the family had actually transferred ownership of its assets to the trusts – determining whether or not they should be declared to French tax authorities for inheritance purposes.

Mr Wildenstein was not present at the court hearing on Tuesday. But he testified in September that for years he was unaware of the complexities of trusts and how they function, even as his family used them liberally to structure their wealth.

“I knew there were trusts,” he told the court. “I had absolutely no idea how they worked.”

He also argued that he spent much of his time outside France and did not closely follow tax matters there. The Wildenstein family has galleries in New York and Tokyo, as well as a prestigious research institute in Paris.

When asked in September whether his father, Daniel, had told him about the trusts before his death, Mr. Wildenstein said that “it may be strange, but he didn’t tell me anything.”

“We were not consulted or informed,” Mr Wildenstein told the court.

But prosecutors said the family never actually gave up ownership of the assets placed in the trusts, which were merely a “façade” to hide vast wealth – ranging from masterpiece paintings to luxury real estate and thoroughbred horses – from taxes. authorities.

The Wildenstein family remains a leading authority on Old Masters and Impressionists and has published definitive catalogs on painters, among others Monet And Gauguingiving them almost the final say on some authentication questions.

But repeated legal entanglements since the 2000s have gradually cast a harsh light on their business, often with lawsuits filed by women in the family who were cut out of the vast fortune during messy divorces and inheritance disputes.

Seven other defendants – who had also previously been acquitted – were charged alongside Mr Wildenstein.

Among them were Mr. Wildenstein’s cousin, Alec Jr., and his estranged sister-in-law, Liouba Stoupakova, who had been married to his brother Alec and had also complained that the Wildensteins had cut her off from her share of the family’s wealth . Several Swiss and French legal and financial advisors, as well as foreign trust companies, were also on trial.

Guy Alexandre, a Belgian transplant surgeon who risked professional censure in the 1960s by removing kidneys from brain-dead patients whose hearts were still beating — a procedure that significantly improved organ viability while challenging the medical definition of death itself — died on February 14 at 1 p.m. his house in Brussels. He was 89.

His son, Xavier, confirmed the death.

Dr. Alexandre was only 29 and had just graduated from Harvard Medical School when, in June 1963, a young patient was driven to the hospital where he worked in Leuven, Belgium. She had suffered a traumatic head injury in a traffic accident and despite extensive neurosurgery, doctors declared her brain dead, although her heart continued to beat.

He knew that in another part of the hospital a patient was suffering from kidney failure. He had assisted in kidney transplants at Harvard and understood that the organs began to lose viability shortly after the heart stopped beating.

Dr. Alexandre pulled aside the chief surgeon, Jean Morelle, and made his position clear. Brain death, he said, is death. Machines can keep a heart beating for long periods of time without the hope of reviving a patient.

His argument went against centuries of assumptions about the boundary between life and death, but Dr. Morelle was convinced.

They removed a kidney from the young patient, turned off her ventilator and completed the transplant in a few minutes. The recipient lived for another 87 days – a significant achievement in itself, considering that the science of organ transplants was still developing at the time.

Over the next two years, Dr. Alexandre and Dr. Morelle quietly performs several more kidney transplants using the same procedure. Finally, Dr. Alexandre confessed at a medical conference in London in 1965 what he had done.

“There has never been, and never will be, the practice of taking organs from a dying person who has an ‘unreasonable chance of recovery or regaining consciousness,’” he told the meeting. “It involves taking organs from a dead person. The point is that I do not accept the cessation of the heartbeat as an indication of death.”

Others in the room, including some of the biggest names in organ transplants, were less sure and said as much.

“Any change in the way of diagnosing death to facilitate transplantation will bring the whole procedure into disrepute,” Roy Calne, a pioneering British transplant surgeon, said at the conference. (Dr. Calne died in January.)

Dr. Alexandre remained firm and offered a set of criteria to determine whether a patient was brain dead. In addition to having suffered a traumatic brain injury, the patient must have dilated pupils and drops in blood pressure, no reflexes, no ability to breathe without a machine, and no signs of brain activity.

Within a few years, Dr. Calne and others the arguments of Dr. Alexandre to accept. In 1968, the Harvard Ad Hoc Committee, a group of medical experts, adopted Dr. Alexandre largely over when it stated that an irreversible coma should be understood as the equivalent of death, regardless of whether the heart continues to beat or not.

Today, Dr. Alexandre has been widely shared in the medical community, and organ removal from brain-dead patients has become an accepted practice.

“The greatness of Alexandre’s insight was that he could see the insignificance of the beating heart,” says Robert Berman, an organ donation activist and journalist. wrote in Tablet magazine in 2019.

Guy Pierre Jean Alexandre was born on July 4, 1934 in Uccle, Belgium, a suburb of Brussels. His father, Pierre, was a government administrator and his mother, Marthe (Mourin) Alexandre, was a personal assistant.

He went to the University of Leuven in 1952 to study medicine. After completing his studies in 1959, he remained at university to train as a transplant surgeon.

He married Eliane Moens in 1958. She died in October. Along with their son, Dr.’s survivors include Alexandre their daughters, Anne, Chantal, Brigitte and Pascale; 17 grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

By the late 1950s, the field of transplant surgery was developing rapidly. One of the leading research centers was the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital (now part of Brigham and Women’s Hospital) in Boston, one of Harvard’s teaching facilities, where the first kidney transplant was performed in 1954.

Dr. Alexandre arrived at Brigham in 1962, overlapping with Dr. Calne, who was completing his own fellowship term. Both worked under Joseph E. Murray, who served in 1990 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work in transplant surgery.

Dr. Alexandre noted that before Dr. Murray removed an organ from a brain-dead patient, he turned off the ventilator and waited for the heart to stop beating. This met a conventional definition of death, but at significant cost to the organ.

“They considered their brain-dead patients to be alive, but they had no problem turning off the ventilator to stop the heart from beating before removing the kidneys,” said Dr. Alexandre to Mr. Berman for his Tablet article. “In addition to ‘killing’ the patient, they also gave the recipients damaged kidneys.”

Dr. Alexandre returned to the University of Leuven after a year, with the intention of putting his beliefs into practice.

He made several other contributions to the field of transplant surgery. In the early 1980s, he developed a method to remove certain antibodies from a kidney so that it could be placed into a patient with an otherwise incompatible blood type.

And in 1984, he performed one of the world’s first successful xenotransplantations: the transfer of an organ from one species to another. In this case, he transferred a pig kidney to a baboon.
