With Easter just around the corner, vets are urging owners to be wary of seemingly harmless household items that could be deadly to dogs.

David Hollinshead at VetsNow in Middlesbrough warns that owners should pay extra attention during celebrations such as Easter, when the risk of accidents is greatest.

“We see a large increase in pet emergencies during holidays and major events, and often this is due to pets eating things they shouldn’t, such as flowers or chocolates,” he said.

Some flowers can be extremely dangerous

One such flower to look out for is the popular spring flower, daffodils, which sources say are highly poisonous to dogs. Blue Cross.

According to the charity, the bulbs are the most dangerous part as this is where the toxins are concentrated, but owners are warned against consuming any part of the flower, including drinking the water from a vase of daffodils.

Symptoms of daffodil poisoning include illness and an upset stomach. If your dog is sleepy and wobbly, these are also telltale signs of daffodil poisoning that you should look out for.

The charity recommends marking out flower spots in the garden and keeping an eye out for daffodils growing in walking areas.

Similarly, a number of other spring flowers, including tulips, buttercups and bluebells, can be fatal. Consuming any part of the plant, especially the bulb, can make dogs sick, and symptoms of stomach upset are often signs of flower poisoning.

Tulips can also cause drooling, nausea and diarrhea, breathing problems and heart palpitations.

Bluebells are one of the most dangerous spring flowering plants and, if consumed in large quantities, can have fatal consequences. The Blue Cross charity is warning owners to be careful when walking through woodland areas where clusters of bluebells can often be found.

Toxic foods to avoid

While preparing the Easter meal can be stressful, it’s vital that owners are also wary of what’s within reach while cooking, pet food company Purina advises. An expensive vet bill will undoubtedly be much more stressful than burnt potatoes.

Pet owners should avoid feeding dogs anything containing sultanas or sultanas, according to Purina, which definitely means hot cruss buns.

Garlic, onions and leeks can also be very dangerous for dogs to consume, with the average vet bill for impending onion poisoning being £339, according to data taken from pet insurance claims.

ManyPets veterinarian Dr. Kirsten Ronngren says this is because onions contain disulfides that can destroy a dog’s red blood cells, leading to a condition called hemolytic anemia.

“Treatment for onion toxicity depends on the size of the pet and how much it has consumed,” she said.

‘In more severe cases, the toxic dose may have been reached, requiring a pet to be treated for anemia.’

Hot cross buns also have the power to result in a hefty vet bill for dog owners. This is because both sultanas and sultanas are poisonous to dogs. It is thought that the tartaric acid in grapes causes the poisoning. Signs of an upset stomach, drooling and loss of appetite are all symptoms of poisoning.

Nutmeg, another common ingredient in hot cross buns, can also be potentially dangerous due to the hallucinogenic toxin myristicin.

Although it is marketed as a healthy alternative, manufacturers tend to put Xylitol, an artificial sweetener, in our food, causing a spike in insulin that can even be fatal for dogs.

Although symptoms often disappear within an hour, the risk of liver failure increases if a lot of Xylitol has been consumed.

Make sure you throw away all chocolate wrappers

While most of us know not to give dogs chocolate, Easter egg packaging can also be harmful to dogs.

Foil packaging can not only pose a choking hazard, but can also lead to a dangerous intestinal obstruction, causing abdominal pain and vomiting.

If you’re trying to make healthier choices for yourself this year, beware that the sweeter one, Xylitol, can be dangerous to dogs.

If you must give them a treat, stick to vegetables

Owners should not only be mindful of what is within the reach of greedy pups, but also be careful about what they feed as leftovers.

Research from Welsh company Burns Pet Nutrition has found that a third of owners overfeed their dogs, with 45 percent even sharing cheese with their dogs.

But founder of vet Burns Pet Nutrition, John Burns MBE, is urging owners to think twice about overfeeding.

‘Dogs don’t necessarily need tasty snacks, only we owners like to give them!’

Don’t let those big puppy eyes pressure you,” he said.

EVERYONE knows there are bargains to be had on Vinted – but did you know you can save up to 70% more?

Tom Church, co-founder of the Money Saving Community Latest offers shares how he finds and negotiates the best prices on used resale sites like eBay and Vinted.

Tom said: “If you’re shopping on a budget, buying from sellers on Vinted and eBay can result in some epic deals.

“If you’re new to resale sites, the number of items available can be overwhelming, but I’ve come up with some top tips to get the best price.

ADD ITEMS TO BASKET

It may seem simple, but one of the easiest ways to get a discount on items is to like them on Vinted or add them to your bag and check them out on eBay, then wait.

Sellers often want to shift items, and if they think you’re interested, they’ll make you an offer. I have received offers up to 30% less than the listed price on eBay.

For example, I recently saw a pair of Timberland boots on eBay. They were listed for £40 and the seller offered me £30. I ended up paying £11 for them so I saved 72%. Even if you don’t accept their initial offer, this gives you more leeway to negotiate since you’re assuming a lower price.

TYPOS

If you deliberately misspell designers’ names in the search bar, you can sometimes find hidden listings that other buyers haven’t seen.

Although most people search for designer brand names, entries with spelling mistakes don’t appear in the results.

So if you purposefully look for a typo, you can find listings that no one else has seen and possibly get a bargain.

BUNDLE OFFERS

Vinted actually has a special bundling feature, which means buyers can get an extra discount on items if they purchase more than one product from the same seller.

Not only do you get the extra discount, you also only have to pay shipping costs once for your order, so you save on that too.

Once you’ve found an item you want to buy, it’s worth taking a look at the seller’s profile to see if anything else catches your eye. Some Vinted sellers have enabled bundle deals and you’ll automatically get a discount. For those who don’t, it’s worth making them an offer.”

AUCTIONS END SOON

Did you know there are websites where you can find eBay auctions that are ending soon?

I recommend using Last minute auction. You can see which eBay auctions will end in an hour with no bids or with less than $1 (excluding delivery). You can drop by at the last minute and pick up a bargain.

In reality it is hit and miss as many items are worth £1 or less. But sometimes there are spelling mistakes or simply items that others have missed. The best deal I got was a pair of like-new Levi jeans for 99 cents.

JUMP ON OLD OFFERS

If you look at the item description on Vinted, you will see the upload date of that listing. Items could have been uploaded a day ago, a month ago, six months ago, a year ago, or even longer.

If an item has been around for a few months or more, it’s worth offering a heavily discounted price. The seller may want to shift the item and be more open to offers.”

OUTLET STORES

eBay isn’t just about individual sellers clearing out their old stuff. Top brands also have outlet pages on the site and many offer free delivery.

I’ve found bargains from Superdry, River Island, Puma, White Stuff and even Calvin Klein. Just type eBay outlet store into Google and the first result should show you all the options.

Items can be up to 70% off, they are brand new and most come with free shipping. It’s definitely worth seeing if you can get a bargain.

If you know where to look, sites like eBay and Vinted can be a treasure trove for bargains. Knowing where to look and what strategies to use to reduce the price of items is crucial, and you can save as much as 70%.

MARTIN Lewis has warned anyone with an eBay account to sell their items now or face a mega price hike.

A post on Money Saving Expert’s Twitter account announced the news to ensure no one gets caught.

The message read: “More fee increases – this time it’s eBay. Starting Monday April 8, selling fees will go up, so sell what you can faster to beat it.

“After the price increase, if you ship a €20 item with €5 shipping costs, you will pay €3.60 in costs instead of €3.50 now.”

Martin Lewis Money saving experts explained that eBay’s fees will increase from 12.8% of the sold price plus shipping to 13.22%. (You still pay an additional 30 cents per transaction.)

According to eBay, the increase is due to “increasing operational costs”.

It comes as Martin Lewis warned first-time buyers that they have just weeks left to claim £1,000 free cash.

The money-saving expert spoke on the Martin Lewis Money Show about the benefits of a Lifetime ISA (LISA).

A LISA is a powerful savings instrument for starters who want to get on the property ladder.

The savings account can save you up to £4,000 per tax year and the state adds 25% per year.

This means you can get up to €1,000 in free cash per year, but if you haven’t already, you need to act quickly.

If you are considering transferring your money to a LISA, you must do so before the end of the tax year, which is April 5.

ICELAND is known for offering good value when it comes to the weekly shop, but is everything worth your money?

We can tell you which items you should avoid buying in Iceland if you want to save some money from your grocery bill.

Iceland is known for its frozen food specialty, but it has much more to offer than just the freezer section.

Customers can get cheap deals on branded food and basic products such as milk, eggs, bread and fresh vegetables.

If you’re not sure where the nearest Iceland is, you can find out using the store locator on the website.

You can also shop Iceland online at The Food Warehouse website, which also lists all the latest deals and multi-buy offers.

Delivery is free if you spend at least €40 online, and if you want home delivery in the store, this is a minimum of €25.

All you have to do is book a delivery time that suits you and wait for your groceries to arrive.

Usually the popular retailer is very competitive on price, but there are some items you may be better off buying elsewhere.

We’ve rounded up all the items you should stop buying in Iceland if you want to cut your grocery costs, and which bargains you should stock up on instead.

Items to stop buying

Pasta

Although Iceland has a good range of branded goods, it does not sell affordable own-brand alternatives.

We spoke to shopping expert Andy Barr, who has worked in the money-saving industry for almost 30 years, to get his thoughts.

He said: ‘I would avoid pantry items such as bread, pasta and tinned food.

“Although there is a good range of products, Iceland doesn’t sell affordable own-brand alternatives like all other supermarkets do, so if you want to try cheaper ranges to save on your weekly shop, you don’t have to, but you will be able to do that here.”

We looked at how Iceland stacks up against other supermarkets’ own-brand offerings when it comes to store cupboard staples.

When it comes to bread, Iceland has brands such as Warbutons, Mothers Pride and Kingsmill.

It also has its own label where an Icelandic 800g thick-cut soft white roll costs £1.

This seems like a pretty good deal when you compare it to a Warbutons toastie loaf for £1.40.

However, we checked out a thick white Village Bakery loaf in Aldi, which cost just 75p for an 850g loaf, saving 25p on the Icelandic loaf.

Fresh fruits and vegetables

Another item you should probably buy elsewhere if you want to get the cheapest price is fresh fruits and vegetables.

Although Iceland has a good range of fresh produce, Andy says other stores may do better.

He said: “Contrary to popular belief, Iceland has a good range of fresh produce at decent prices.

“That said, you can certainly find cheaper deals elsewhere; ASDA, Lidl and Aldi often work out cheaper.”

We checked how much a pack of bananas costs in Iceland at Aldi.

At the time of writing, a pack of five bananas at Aldi costs 78p, while Icelandic bananas cost £1, meaning Aldi is 22p cheaper.

Toiletries

Shop around before purchasing toiletries such as shower gel, toothpaste and deodorant as you may be able to get it cheaper by shopping elsewhere too.

We checked online and while there is a small selection of branded items such as Colgate toothpaste and Radox shower gel, there is no own brand alternative.

Additionally, unlike groceries and frozen items, there didn’t appear to be any multi-purchase deals or offers in the toiletries section of the website at the time we checked.

However, it is important to note that this does not mean that there are no offers on these products.

A 75ml tube of Colgate whitening toothpaste costs £1 in Iceland, while buying the same tube in Aldi costs 99p.

While that’s not a huge saving, other places like Superdrug often have deals for their members that can reduce the price significantly, so it’s worth keeping an eye on.

Items to stock up on

Big brands and dupes

One of the ways you can get a deal in Iceland is through the big dupes in the freezer section.

Andy said: “You can’t go to Iceland without making the most of the huge range of frozen foods.

“The best products available, in my opinion, are the frozen versions of restaurant and food store favorites such as TGI Friday and Greggs.”

“Not only does this give consumers easy access to the food they know and love, it is often cheaper than going to the restaurant itself.”

An example is the savings you can make by buying a pack of Greggs frozen sausage rolls in Iceland instead of fresh from the bakery.

A pack of frozen sausage rolls costs around 75p each, compared to £1.20 if you buy it fresh from the bakery.

That’s why you save 45 cents per sausage roll by buying the frozen package.

Frozen meat

If you want to save a few euros in your shopping cart, it is also worth keeping an eye on the frozen meat department.

Andy said: “The frozen meat section in Iceland can also be great, especially for large families who want to keep everyone well fed on a budget.”

Most frozen meats come with a three-for-£10 multi-buy offer, meaning you can save even more if you buy three items included in the deal.

One of Andy’s examples is a 1.9kg bag of frozen chicken portions for £3.50, which works out to £1.84/kg.

This is significantly less than other retailers such as ASDA, where 1kg of frozen chicken breast costs £4.25.

Ice cream

One of the things Andy recommends looking out for is the huge selection of ice creams on offer.

He said: “The last range I would recommend trying is the ice cream. The variety of brands and flavors in Iceland is unparalleled.

“From high-protein ice cream to Terry’s Chocolate Orange, J2O and even Lotus Biscoff brand products, there is a huge selection of unique flavors to suit everyone’s taste buds.”

We looked at the website and there are 97 types and brands of ice cream on offer.

For example, we found Cadbury, Ben and Jerry’s and their own brand of Rocket and Sprinkle lollipops

Each of the items costs between £2 and a fiver for a box or tub, making it pretty cheap to feed a family.

We priced a jar of Ben & Jerry’s Phish Food (465ml), which cost £3 at the time we checked on Iceland’s website.

We found the same bath in Asda for £5.15, meaning you can make a huge saving of £2.15 by buying this item in Iceland.

MCDONALD’S will be eliminating nine items from its menu within days, including what fans are calling “the best McFlurry ever”.

Fast food lovers should rush to the chain if they want one last taste of its popular dishes, snacks and sweet treats.

The items will leave the McDonald’s menu on Tuesday (March 12), just over a month after joining.

Among those making an exit is the KitKat Ruby Chocolate McFlurry.

The sweet treat combines soft ice cream with Ruby Chocolate-covered KitKat pieces and waffle bites, then is topped with a pink raspberry sauce.

They’re not the only McFlurry fans they’ll be saying goodbye to.

The classic KitKat Milk Chocolate McFlurry, which mixes KitKat pieces with chocolate sauce, is also being axed.

The popular Big Lekker and the Big Lekker with bacon are also going away.

Every time the burgers make a comeback, they are a huge success, with many calling for them to be made permanent.

They include a beef patty, processed cheese made with Emmentaler, tomato, lettuce, onions and the iconic Big Taste sauce.

Many fans have taken to social media to express how much they will miss these items when they are gone.

Someone wrote about the KitKat Ruby Chocolate McFlurry: “The best McFlurry I’ve ever had.”

Another wrote: “They should have the Big Tasty burger all year round.”

While a third Facebook user shouted: “The big treat is my favorite.”

It’s not all bad news though, as from March 13 there will also be an influx of new dishes and treats.

The new items include Galaxy Truffle Bunny McFlurry and the Hot Cross Bun Pie.

While the McCrispy Deluxe, the Cadbury Creme Egg McFlurry and Halloumi Fries are all making a comeback too.

Not only that, but hitting menus for the first time is the Hot Cross Bun Latte.

The Truffle Bunny McFlurry combines soft, fluffy ice cream swirled with pieces of Galaxy Truffle, bunny ears and white and dark chocolate drops.

It is then topped with Galaxy chocolate sauce. You can get the treat for €2.19.

The Hot Cross Bun Pie is also new to menus priced at £1.99.

It consists of a crispy cinnamon pastry, filled with a spiced fruit mix and butter-flavored cream filling.

The drink is a smooth latte mixed with a sweet and spicy hot cross bun flavored syrup, topped with cinnamon cream and a layer of hot cross bun flavor.

For those of you who don’t like change, there are also three recurring menu items.

The much-loved Cadbury Creme Egg McFlurry is back in time for chocolate season.

It swirls soft dairy ice cream with chunks of Cadbury Dairy Milk and is topped with a Creme Egg sauce.

The sweet treat costs £2.19 for a regular and £1.59 for a mini.

Returning for only the second time is the McCrispy Deluxe, which first debuted last summer.

The burger is a chic take on the popular favorite.

It consists of 100% chicken fillet in a crispy jacket with hot and spicy mayonnaise and topped with cheese and bacon.

The burger only costs €5.89 and €7.79 including side dish and drink.

The shake-up will also see the return of the chain’s halloumi fries for the third year in a row – you can get a pack of four cheese sticks covered in a light batter, served with a rich tomato dip.

They cost £2.79 for a pack, or £7.39 for a share box.

Research by The Sun has found that a Big Mac meal can be up to 30p cheaper in restaurants just two miles apart.

Meanwhile, you can buy a Big Mac and fries for just £2.99 by completing a feedback survey found on an old McDonald’s receipt.

The receipt should include a 12-digit code that you can enter on the Food for Thought website alongside your submitted survey.

You will then receive a five-digit code, which is your voucher for the €2.99 offer.

Make sure you check out all the different apps and platforms if you’re also ordering McDonald’s to your home.

Our research has shown that some can charge up to £1.20 more than others.

Starbucks UK has introduced three new drinks: Iced Strawberry Matcha Tea Latte, Iced Caramelised Macadamia Oat Shaken Espresso and Iced Toasted Vanilla Oat Shaken Espresso.

The pink and green matcha tea latte is the coffee chain’s latest beverage innovation – the earthy notes of the tea complemented by the sweet and fruity taste of cold foam with strawberry cream.

Senior Beverage Developer at Starbucks EMEA Roshnee Dattani said: “The strawberry element of the drink makes it more familiar and approachable, encouraging customers who have never tried matcha to do so.

“The drink is made with the finest quality unsweetened matcha powder sourced from Asia… We serve all our Matcha Green Tea Lattes in EMEA with 100% green tea and no added sugar, to ensure that every cup is of the highest standard is.”

Another addition to the Starbucks menu, the Iced Caramelized Macadamia Oat Shaken Espresso combines the buttery and nutty flavors of macadamia with the smooth notes of Starbucks’ Blonde Espresso Roast.

It comes at the perfect time for spring: cool and light, shaken with ice and topped with a splash of oat milk.

The Iced Toasted Vanilla Oat Shaken Espresso, launched last year, is back with the same sweet, toasted vanilla flavor that was already such a hit.

Facebook group Newfoodsuk shared the news of the three additions, exciting caffeine lovers across the UK.

One person commented on the post: “oh stop! I need a trip xxxx.”

Another said: “I need!!!!”

Someone else wrote: “oh hello there caramelized macadamia.”

And another: “finally new matcha.”
