The category winners and shortlisted entries in the Open competition of the 2024 Sony World Photography Awards have been unveiled – and the images featured are as extraordinary as ever.

The prestigious contest runs several competitions every year, with more than 395,000 photographs from more than 220 countries and territories entered into this year’s overall awards.

Standout images from the Open contest include a scene from New Mexico that could be an alien planet, a moonrise burning across the horizon in Scotland and a curious capybara – the world’s largest rodent – wandering around the kitchen of a house in the Amazon Rainforest.

Other particularly mesmerising photos that wowed the judges include a shot of a jaguar attacking a caiman crocodile, a picture of a lone polar bear wandering past a group of walruses and a spellbinding image of llamas enveloped in freezing fog in the iconic Torres del Paine mountains in southern Chile.

Category winners receive digital imaging equipment from Sony and will go on to compete for the prestigious Open Photographer of the Year title and a $5,000 (£3,897) prize – announced on April 18 at an awards ceremony in London.

Scroll down to see MailOnline Travel’s pick of the bunch – and cast your vote for your favourite image from our selection in our poll at the bottom.

Men hoorde hem zeggen: ‘Meteen! Meteen! Laten we herladen.

The armorer for the Alec Baldwin movie Rust showed little emotion as she was hauled straight to jail after being found guilty in the shooting death of the film’s cinematographer.

A jury found that Hannah Gutierrez-Reed was negligent in allowing a live bullet be placed into the gun that Alec Baldwin used on the set. This resulted in the accidental shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

After two hours of deliberations at the courthouse in Santa Fe, New Mexico, a jury found Gutierrez-Reed guilty on the manslaughter count, but acquitted her on a charge of tampering with evidence. She now faces up to 18 months in jail.

Gutierrez-Reed, 26, removed her jewelry and handed over her phone as she was lead from court on Wednesday.

As she was walked out to start her sentence, her mom could be seen weeping and putting her head in her hands.

Hutchins’ family released statement after the verdict and said they ‘look forward’ to everyone else responsible for her death facing justice – an apparent reference to Baldwin who faces trial for involuntary manslaughter in July.

The actor, 65, will be tried in the same courthouse and faces the same possible sentence if convicted.

‘Halyna’s parents and her sister have always wanted everyone who is responsible for Halyna’s death to be held accountable,’ the family’s lawyers Gloria Allred and John Carpenter said.

‘Today was the first trial and conviction in the criminal justice process. We are satisfied that the jury, based on the evidence, found Hannah Gutierrez-Reed guilty beyond a reasonable doubt for her part in the taking of Halyna’s life.

‘We look forward to the justice system continuing to make sure that everyone else who is responsible for Halyna’s death is required to face the legal consequences for their actions.’

Baldwin was originally charged with involuntary manslaughter but the allegations were dropped in April last year.

He was dramatically charged again last month and pleaded not guilty.

The shooting happened in October 2021 after two weeks of filming while Baldwin was practicing drawing out his gun from the holster.

He opened fire on Hutchins, 42, a married mother-of-one whose son was nine at the time, and the bullet went through her and lodged in the shoulder of director Joel Souza, who survived and testified in court.

While Baldwin was not the defendant in this case at times it felt that he was, with one witness stating as much out loud.

Across more than two dozen witnesses, prosecutors painted a damning portrait of a film that was in a state of ‘rushed chaos.’

The night before the incident, six members of the camera crew quit because of their concerns over safety.

Gutierrez-Reed’s defense was to blame everyone but her, but especially Baldwin.

Her lawyer, Jason Bowles, said  Baldwin was the ‘big boss’ on set that nobody stood up to even though he rushed people and ignored safety checks because Rust, which he was a producer on, had a tight budget.

The jury heard that Baldwin commissioned director Souza to write the script, which he owned the rights to. Baldwin was the lead actor on the movie and was also a producer.

Bowles called Gutierrez-Reed, who was just 24 at the time of the incident, a ‘scapegoat’ for wider failings that led the New Mexico safety regulator to issue a $136,000 fine to the producers for ‘willful and serious’ safety failings.

Bowles told the court that Baldwin himself made the set unsafe by waving his gun like a ‘pointing stick’ at people.

A behind the scenes video from the filming showed Baldwin demanding a second shot immediately after one that just finished.

He was heard saying: ‘Right away! Right away! Let’s reload. Here we go, come on! We should have two guns, both reloading.’

Asked if that kind of conduct was typical, Carpenter said no, adding that it put pressure on the armorer to stand up to him.

Moments later, after the director shouted cut, Baldwin let loose another blank round while standing next to the 12-year-old actor.

Carpenter said that when somebody yells cut, nothing else should be fired and that Baldwin ‘went off script.’

Baldwin could have used a Nerf gun in the scene where he accidentally shot Hutchins dead because it was just a rehearsal known as blocking, the jury heard.

But Baldwin insisted on using the real guns, known as his ‘hero props’, because he preferred them, just like he preferred the most powerful dummies possible because they were more realistic.

FBI firearms expert Bryce Ziegler gave evidence during the trial of Rust armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, 26, on Monday, that challenged Alex Baldwin's version of events

Jurors were told  Baldwin himself made the set unsafe by waving his gun like a ‘pointing stick’ at people and firing rounds after the director said cut

In his opening statement, Bowles said that Baldwin ‘violated basic gun safety’ by pointing the gun at Hutchins because he didn’t intend to shoot at her.

He said: ‘The primary thing here was rush, get this thing so we can get the money and that’s all on production and Mr. Baldwin is one of the primary producers. That’s on them. Miss Gutierrez-Reed had no control over that.’

During cross-examination of Addiego, Bowles asked: ‘Did you ever stand up to Mr Baldwin and say we’re not going to move this fast?’

Addiego said it was ‘not my job’ and he didn’t recall ‘anybody standing up to Mr Baldwin on the set of Rust.’

‘He’s running the show, he’s the big boss, right?’ Bowles said.

‘He’s number one, so yes,’ Addiego said.

Perhaps the most damning evidence against Baldwin undercut his claim that he never pulled the trigger on the gun.

Bryce Ziegler, an agent with the FBI firearms unit who examined the gun Baldwin used, said he had to break the gun with a mallet to get it to fire without using the trigger.

Ziegler said that couldn’t have happened on the set of Rust because the gun was in working order when it came to him.

Speaking to ABC News in December 2021 Baldwin said: ‘I didn’t pull the trigger. I would never point a gun at anyone and pull the trigger at them. Never’.

In her police interview, Gutierrez-Reed pointed the finger at Baldwin as well and claimed that he was distracted during the safety briefing she tried to give him.

She said that the actor was ‘on his phone a lot of that entire thing’ and didn’t pay attention when she was showing him how to use the weapon.

There was powerful testimony from Dave Halls, the first assistant director on the film and the last person to handle the gun before giving it to Baldwin.

Before the trial, Halls had pleaded no contest to a charge of negligent use of a deadly weapon and received six months probation.

Asked why he did so, Halls said: ‘I was negligent in checking the gun properly,’

Halls became emotional as he described what happened next in the chapel on the set of Rust.

He said: ‘Mr Baldwin was pulling it (the gun) out, getting used to that action

‘He was in communication with Miss Hutchins about where to point the gun.

‘The gun went off.

‘It was so many thoughts (in my head). The idea it was a live round of ammunition that went off, it wasn’t computing,’

Hutchins was 3ft away from Halls to his left and he said to her: ‘Are you all right,’

In tears, Halls said that Hutchins replied: ‘I can’t feel my legs,’

Addiego also broke down in tears while being pressed by Bowles on why he was part of a civil lawsuit against Baldwin and the Rust producers for negligence.

He said: ‘I’m hoping for justice, sir. Two people were injured on a film set. That has not only affected me – it’s affected the film industry.’

The criminal case is not the only court proceedings resulting from the shooting of Hutchins.

In 2022 Baldwin settled a civil lawsuit filed against him by Matthew Hutchins, the widow of Hutchins, and the father of their son.

Under the terms Rust continued production at a new location in Montana and Matthew Hutchins, who has called his wife’s death a ‘terrible accident,’ is an executive producer.

No date has yet been set for the film’s release.

From an alien theme to a one-of-a-kind pizza, a foodie has lifted the lid on what the most unique McDonald’s restaurants in America have to offer.

Dylan Huynh from California set of on a McNugget filled adventure to visit five of the country’s wackiest outlets in a bid to rank which one is the ‘coolest McDonald’s ever.’

In a YouTube video documenting his trip, he starts his journey in Roswell, New Mexico, where he checks into a McDonald’s shaped like a UFO with ‘little alien statues’ installed outside.

Inside the restaurant, he says it ‘actually feels like you’re in a UFO’ with ‘metal plated walls’ and even an ‘astronaut Ronald McDonald’ hanging from the ceiling.

US’ MOST UNIQUE MCDONALD’S AS VISITED BY DYLAN

Dylan Huynh from California set of on a McNugget filled adventure to visit five of the country’s wackiest outlets:

  • UFO-themed restaurant in Roswell, New Mexico: ‘Feels like you’re in a UFO’
  • The McMansion in New York state:  ‘Pretty to look at but not fun’
  • World’s largest McDonald’s in Orlando, Florida: ‘Sells McPasta and McPizza’
  • McDonald’s HQ in Chicago: ‘The global menu rotates every three months’
  • CosMc in Illinois: ‘Menu designed to boost your mood into the stratosphere’

In terms of the food, Dylan didn’t find anything unusual, so he opted for a portion of 20 chicken McNuggets and a McFlurry. Both got his seal of approval.

Before leaving, he snapped a photo with a ‘cool alien statue’ and bought something from the gift shop.

Next up, Dylan heads to what he deems the ‘world’s fanciest McDonald’s.’

The colonial era McDonald’s, dubbed the McMansion, is set in a 19th-century former farmhouse in Hyde Park, New York.

The classical building was saved from being knocked down by local activists and it was given landmark status.

In his YouTube video, Dylan reveals that it became a McDonald’s in 1991.

As he opens the ‘fancy door’ and steps inside, he is shocked by the interiors with a ‘grand staircase leading up to the second floor’ and exposed wooden beams in the ceiling.

He adds: ‘It literally feels like I’m inside someone’s house, a very rich person’s house.’

Along with a fancy door, he found ‘fancy lights, fancy windows, fancy plants, even the trash cans were fancy.’

While he was impressed by the regal interiors, Dylan wasn’t so enthused about the ambience. He found the restaurant seemed very empty, with ‘no kids’ and ‘just fancy looking old people.’

As he sits down he says: ‘I don’t know how to explain this but I feel very uncomfortable in this McDonald’s. I feel like I have to whisper.

‘I’m just going to go right out and say it. I am not having that much fun at this McDonald’s.’

After finishing a portion of chicken McNuggets, Dylan leaves the restaurant with the farewell message: ‘Goodbye world’s fanciest McDonald’s you are pretty to look at but very weird.’

The third stop on Dylan’s whirlwind tour is the world’s largest McDonald’s, which is located in Orlando, Florida.

The sprawling restaurant, which opened in 1975, has a floor area of more than 19,000ft and along with a restaurant, it has a 22ft tall play area and an arcade with more than 100 games.

Dylan reveals that it is also ‘the only McDonald’s in the world that sells the McPasta and the McPizza.’

As he walks through the restaurant, he points out some woodfired pizza ovens and he even passes an aquarium.

In terms of his food order, Dylan goes to town and spends $64 on a spread of treats including ‘the usual chicken McNuggets,’ an Oreo McFlurry, the McPasta and the McPizza.

Lastly, he heads to the play area to test out the ‘infamous big yellow slide.’

Summing up the world’s largest McDonald’s he says: ‘This place is the exact opposite from the McMansion. The McMansion was dull, gray and quiet [but] this McDonald’s was very lively, very colorful and definitely not quiet.’

Continuing on his quest, Dylan visits the McDonald’s global headquarters in Chicago where they offer a global menu of their delicacies from around the world.

Some old McDonald’s favorites also made the menu including its popular McMuffins.

As he nears the new concept restaurant Dylan says: ‘It’s technically a drive-thru… but from the pictures it looks very, very exciting.

‘According to the CosMc website their menu is supposed to be otherworldly and it’s designed to boost your mood into the stratosphere. I don’t even know what that means but I’m excited about it.’

He orders a s’mores cold brew which he deems ‘pretty nice,’ a portion of hash browns which he says is ‘nice’ but on the smaller side, and an Oreo McFlurry, which he says always takes him back to his childhood.

Lastly he tests a drink, which he asked the drive-thru attendant to surprise him with.

He tells viewers that it the ‘radioactive red’ drink features ‘popping boba’ beans in it and a lemon and as he tastes it he winces in response to its sour taste.

Following his epic journey across America, Dylan crowns the world’s biggest McDonald’s in Florida as the winning restaurant, with its unique restaurant-style dishes and big yellow slide.

Airbnb changed the vacation game when they emerged 15 years ago and now ambitious hosts are getting creative with their properties to appeal to holiday-makers seeking unique experiences.

From a secluded lighthouse on an Alaskan island, to a sprawling 3,000-sq-ft home inside a cave in Arizona and a 186ft-deep missile silo in New Mexico, home owners are pushing the boundaries to get listed as ‘super hosts’.

The website even has specific categories for ‘earth homes’ – hobbit-style properties – windmills, shepherd’s huts, caves, barns and towers, to cater to the specific demands of tourists.

Here DailyMail.com takes a look at some of the most bizarre and magnificent homes across the States.

Alaska

For $900 a night, you can stay in The Lighthouse, an Airbnb in Alaska that sleeps up to six people and offers 1.5 bathrooms.

The Lighthouse was constructed in 1983 by a local veterinarian called Burgess Bauder – who spent 18 months doing the heavy lifting to build the property by himself.

It sits on the high point of a one-acre private island in Sitka.

The main level has a full kitchen, living room, dining room and a full deck that wraps around the entire property while the bedrooms sit on the second and third floor.

‘It’s an idyllic place to relax, read, do a little yoga or just cast your eyes out for whales and other wildlife,’ the Airbnb page reads.

JOHN RYDER walked into the lion's den the night he fought Canelo Alvarez but still came out roaring.

Canelo returned to Mexico for the first time in more than a decade last May to defend his undisputed super-middleweight crown against Ryder.

And he dominated for more than 12 rounds to mark a successful homecoming.

Ryder needed police protection from the raucous and adoring Canelo faithful, but left after turning the rival fans into new friends.

He told talkSPORT: “I don't think anything can really top that.

“It's going to take some seriously bloodthirsty people to really beat Guadalajara.

“Because we are driven in armored SUVs with a police escort to ensure your safety at weigh-ins and whatever we were doing.

“It was the size of the fight, the size of Canelo, it's just huge.

“The Mexican fans, I got a lot of friends from that fight.

“I'm in contact with a lot of Mexicans now, they love their boxing and support their own boxing.

CASINO SPECIAL – BEST CASINO WELCOME OFFERS

“They are what true fans should be, they just like to see the best fight the best.”

Ryder, 35, returns against Canelo's compatriot, undefeated former light-middleweight world champion Jaime Munguia.

And with 27-year-old Munguia switching coaches from Erik Morales to Freddie Roach, the transition period could be profitable for Ryder.

He said, 'Listen, he hasn't put a foot wrong yet.

“He's been there with some good names; the standout for me would be Liam Smith.

“Listen, he didn't look great against Sergiy Derevyanchenko, but everyone has off nights. It was a fight of the year candidate there.

“He has clearly made changes now [new trainer] Freddie Roach. So it remains to be seen what worked for him and what didn't.

“I feel like I'm getting him at a good time, he'll be in a bit of a transition I think after moving from Erik Morales to Freddie Roach.

“I'm in the twilight of my career and I've learned so much about myself in the last year with the Canelo fight – the fight I wish I had had ten years ago. I feel like this is the best time for me.”

How you say in English… total liability?

Two days after news broke that Alec Baldwin will be re-charged with involuntary manslaughter in the accidental shooting death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, his fake-Spanish wife Hilaria took to the streets of New York, scantily-clad in 30-degree weather.

Truly, there is no indignity that these two won’t exploit. All attention is good attention to the Baldwins, it seems.

And so, with snow still on the ground, Hilaria paraded for the paparazzi, a cohort her husband otherwise hates.

She wore a tiny black mini-skirt, fishnet tights, patent leather stiletto heels, a metallic motorcycle jacket slung over her shoulders, a T-shirt emblazoned with the cartoon superhero ‘She-Ra, Princess of Power’ — clearly how she sees herself — and ridiculous, ski-goggle sized eyewear.

It was a demented, dated replay of early-aughts staged pap strolls.

Here came 40-year-old Hilaria — the one-time Rachel Dolezal of the Hamptons — sauntering slowly, the cameras clicking away as she carried on a suspiciously loud, stilted conversation on her cell.

‘Oh, that’s so nice!’ she exclaimed. ‘I’m so happy to hear that’.

Hear what, exactly?!

That her 65-year-old husband, the father of her seven children, could face prison time? That his legal fees are surely mounting? That they are already on track to becoming the biggest pariahs of 2024?

Reader, I beg of you: Watch the video for yourself.

Hilaria, née Hillary Hayward-Thomas from Boston, still speaks with that phony Spanish accent.

¡Ay caramba!

If there was ever a time to go to ground, to shut up and ensconce yourselves in one of your luxury properties, now would be it.

Instead, these two are courting even more press. They are trailed by a camera crew led by Kennedy scion Rory Kennedy, sister of the very problematic presidential contender Bobby Jr., shooting what looks like a reality series.

Imagine the pitch: What happens when a rage-a-holic actor accidentally kills a colleague, injures another one, denies any and all responsibility, then takes to social media with a delusional esposa who can’t stop slinging babies across her chest?

Working title — ‘Hilaria Ensues’!

All this comes as Baldwin’s lawyers demanded that he is ‘entitled to a fair and speedy disposition of the charges to minimize public vilification’.

Too late for that, Alec.

Take a look at the most damning parts of these new charges, as outlined by New Mexico prosecutors in their statement of probable cause.

Recall, too, that Baldwin wasn’t just an actor, but a producer of the film in question, ‘Rust’.

In other words, he shared responsibility for on-set safety.

‘Statements and evidence show Baldwin was not present for required firearms training prior to the commencement of filming,’ the document reads.

The film’s reportedly inexperienced and deeply inept armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed, who will be tried on charges of involuntary manslaughter and tampering with evidence, told investigators that during safety training Baldwin was preoccupied with his phone:

‘A training session for at least an hour or more in length was scheduled,’ the statement says, ‘but the actual training consisted only of approximately 30 minutes as according to Reed, Baldwin was distracted and talking on his cell phone to family during the training’.

Is he a teenager? How are phones even allowed into mandatory weapons training on a film set? How were they not confiscated until training was over?

Most important: Baldwin has since maintained that the gun which killed Hutchins accidentally went off on its own, a claim two Hollywood firearms experts told me is impossible.

‘I’m not aware of any gun firing itself,’ veteran armorer Steve Wolf said. ‘The trigger still must have been pressed.’

Former FBI agent turned on-set expert Bobby Chacon agreed: ‘Bullets don’t curve. He isn’t in ‘The Matrix’. The trigger would still have to be pulled.’

The New Mexico statement of probable cause records Baldwin as admitting he ‘fired’ the gun.

Yet during a thoroughly repellent, self-pitying interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos in December 2021 — two months after the shooting — Baldwin had the temerity to blame Hutchins.

‘Everything is at her direction,’ Baldwin said. ‘I’m holding the gun where she told me to hold it, which ended up right below her armpit.’

But then Baldwin contradicted himself.

‘I would never point a gun at anyone,’ he said.

Either he did point the gun at Hutchins or he didn’t. There’s no margin for error here.

The film's reportedly inexperienced and deeply inept armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed (pictured), who will be tried on charges of involuntary manslaughter and tampering with evidence, told investigators that during safety training Baldwin was preoccupied with his phone. Is he a teenager?

Such sloppiness extended to the entire ‘Rust’ production. The morning of the accidental shooting, seven crew members walked off set over safety concerns — namely, carelessness when it came to firearms.

One of those crewmembers sent this text to the unit production manager: ‘We’ve now had three accidental discharges. This is super unsafe.’

And finally, the question I keep coming back to: If that scene had called for Alec Baldwin to hold that gun to his head and pull the trigger, wouldn’t he have checked it himself?

This case, these charges and the outcome, really do matter.

Hutchins was a young wife and mother who lost her life due to apparent disregard for regulations. She and her survivors deserve justice.

It will also set a precedent for safety on film and TV sets, and hopefully prove that no one, not even a rich, spoiled actor, is above the law.

That in fact, given a movie star’s influence and authority, given that most crew members may be afraid to say, ‘No’, or ‘Put down your phone and pay attention to this safety meeting’ — there’s all the more reason for the famous and powerful to be held to account.

Some may say it’s enough that Baldwin surely can’t now get hired (truly, who would insure him?). Or that he’s had to price-slash his Hamptons mansion by $10 million and star in a risible promotional video to unload it.

But remember: He and his wife are the same callous people who posted happy-family pictures all over social media in the days after Halyna’s death, seemingly sparing not a thought for her traumatized young son, so bereft he was unable to speak for two days.

Here’s what Hilaria had the gall to write: ‘Parenting through this has been an intense experience, to say the least’.

That line — so heartless, so tone-deaf and foul — never fails to astonish.

Hilaria Baldwin — the ultimate internet troll — shoving her fake-perfect life and soft-core yoga poses in everyone’s faces, including the devastated Hutchins family.

Last April, after the charges against Baldwin were dropped the first time, they again turned to Instagram and posted a super-creepy picture of a barefoot Hilaria in Alec’s lap, her head on his shoulder, his eyes closed in deep satisfaction.

Shameful. Disgusting.

As was Alec’s decision to resume filming on a movie that will be forever stained with this accidental death, a movie no one wants or needs to see.

Alec and Hilaria Baldwin, with their insatiable need for attention and their codependent malignant narcissism, are incredibly well-matched.

These are the same people who, with this terrible cloud hanging over them, prioritize the important things. The day before Hilaria’s birthday last January, Alec went online and begged his fans to get her to one million Instagram followers.

‘It seems like she’s just centimeters shy,’ he said. ‘Would you follow her on Instagram?’

As of writing, Hilaria’s account, publicity-strut and all, remains stubbornly stuck at 995,000.

Alec potentially going to prison if found guilty is one thing. Not being able to crack a million followers on IG — now that’s surely Hilaria’s version of hell.

Or, as she would say: ¡infierno!

Alec Baldwin has been charged with involuntary manslaughter by a New Mexico grand jury, more than two years after he accidentally shot cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of his ill-fated Western film Rust.

The suit was filed Friday and charges Baldwin with involuntary manslaughter based on negligent use of a firearm and disregard for the safety of others.

If convicted, Baldwin faces up to 18 months in prison.

Previous charges filed by New Mexico prosecutors were dismissed last April.

Alec Baldwin (pictured in November) was indicted today by a grand jury in New Mexico for involuntary manslaughter

The grand jury indictment charges Baldwin with involuntary manslaughter on the grounds of negligent use of a firearm and disregard for the safety of others.

The grand jury indictment charges Baldwin with involuntary manslaughter on the grounds of negligent use of a firearm and disregard for the safety of others.

In a statement today, Baldwin's attorneys Alex Spiro and Luke Nikas said, “We look forward to our day in court.”

Gloria Allred, the attorney for Halyna's parents and sister, said in a statement: “Our clients have always sought the truth about what happened on the day Halyna Hutchins was tragically shot and killed on October 21, 2021.

“They continue to seek the truth for them in our civil lawsuit and also want accountability in the criminal justice system.

“The grand jury has determined there is sufficient evidence to indict Alec Baldwin on a charge of involuntary manslaughter.

“We look forward to the criminal trial that will determine whether he should be convicted for Halyna's untimely death.”

Baldwin has always maintained that he complied with gun safety laws, and that the fault lies with the gunsmith or crew who handed him a gun loaded with a live round.

He insists he confirmed the gun was “cold” when he took it to rehearse the scene in question.

Alec Baldwin and Halyna Hutchins, along with other cast, are pictured on the Rust set in October. Baldwin and other producers of the film have been ordered by New Mexico safety regulators to pay $136,793 for mistakes that led to the shooting of the cameraman.

Baldwin was practicing drawing the prop gun from his holster when he claims it spontaneously fired.

He has always maintained that he did not pull the trigger.

But a new report from Lucien Haag of Forensic Science Services in Arizona states that the trigger “had to be pulled or depressed sufficiently to release the fully cocked or retracted hammer of the evidence revolver.”

The lengthy legal fiasco began with Hutchins' death in October.

Baldwin launched a media tour insisting it was a tragic accident and not a murder for which he was responsible.

He was initially charged in January 2023 by New Mexico's first judicial district attorney, Mary Carmack-Altwies, who launched her own media tour shortly after filing charges.

Baldwin's team interpreted her enthusiasm for the cause as a fame-hungry attempt to boost her own career.

After hashing it out with his team in the court of public opinion, Carmack-Altwies withdrew from the case and a special prosecutor was appointed to take over the case.

Last April, that team decided to drop the charges, and Baldwin, who had already settled a wrongful death lawsuit brought by Hutchins' family, breathed a brief sigh of relief.

The scandal – now culminating in the new set of charges – has tarnished the actor's reputation and earning potential.

In a video earlier this week, Baldwin appeared winded on the beach in a real estate video to promote the sale of his Hamptons spread.

He is selling the property for $19 million – $10 million less than he first put it on the market. Many see it as a desperate cash grab to pay his mounting legal bills.

It is also believed that the family is filming a reality TV show.

A disturbing number of suicides are sweeping America's party-obsessed ski towns, raising alarms about why so many residents of vacation hotspots are killing themselves.

Often called the “paradise paradox” by mental health experts, the Rockies' high-altitude party towns are seeing record suicide rates that stand in stark contrast to the picturesque lifestyle they claim to offer.

Factors leading to its rise include the transient way of life on the slopes, financial instability, isolation from the cities and a lack of proper investment in mental health care by tourism-oriented local authorities.

As Victoria Mendoza, a 17-year-old resident of Grand Junction, Colorado, put it NPR in 2018, after seven teenagers committed suicide in her town that year: “It feels like a cloud hangs over our entire valley.”

Picturesque ski resorts like Aspen, Colorado (pictured) have been plagued by a wave of suicides in recent years, as the vacations they offer stand in stark contrast to the lives their residents lead year-round.

Professional snowboarder Ben Lynch committed suicide in 2021, one of the most high-profile suicides in recent years in the Rockies region, which has seen an alarming wave of similar tragedies

For those who choose to live in the mountains, an escape from the hustle and bustle of city life is one of the main attractions; but in recent years there has been increasing calls for action from residents who feel not enough is being done to help those who are struggling.

According to the CDC, four Rockies states made up six of the highest suicide rates in 2021 — with Wyoming's rate more than 4.5 times higher than New Jersey's.

The region, particularly New Mexico, Colorado and Montana, has been nicknamed the 'Suicide Belt', with towns designed for a getaway from the city becoming epicenters of the crisis.

Mendoza said that after seven students committed suicide in her town years earlier, along with her uncle, “it got to the point where we were just waiting for the next one.”

In nearby Telluride, Colorado, about a two-hour drive from Grand Junction, the town made headlines in 2016 after a wave of suicides hit promising skiers in the region.

The story of Tom Slocum, a 57-year-old avid outdoorsman, highlighted the struggles experienced by many in the region that have led to such disturbing suicide rates.

A talented athlete, Slocum moved to Telluride as a young man after college to enjoy the slopes, but over the years found himself forced to eke out a living working primarily in hotels, as described in National Geographic.

As he grew older, he lived in a small caretaker's house behind a multimillion-dollar home for those vacationing on the mountain, while the remoteness meant the town had little publicly funded mental health care.

When Slocum shot himself atop a mountain overlooking the Bear Creek Basin in March 2016, he became the first of three suicides in San Miguel County in just two weeks.

For many, ski towns in the Rockies offer a weeklong escape from the city. For those who live there, the communities offer poor access to mental health care, employment opportunities and a lonely pace of life

Within months, several other suicides occurred in Telluride, making the county's firearm suicide rate more than six times the national average.

The tragic story is certainly not a rarity for people in ski resorts, where life in cold, year-round darkness bears little resemblance to the week-long vacations enjoyed by the wealthy in the same place.

Christina King, a therapist in Aspen, Colorado, where the suicide rate is more than double the national average, said the crisis is the result of a negative cycle in which struggling people still have little access to help.

“When people say, 'We are lucky to live here,' I have a hard time with that statement,” she said Aspen Public Radio.

'A lot of people work really hard to be here. I don't know if it's just luck.'

She argued that there is a distortion between the reality of living in a ski town and vacationing there; Living 24/7 in a holiday hotspot is hardly a constant paradise.

“I think we need to recognize that a walk at the Maroon Bells or a powder day doesn't take away the pain and suffering,” she said.

“It can help to change perspective… but I often think we miss the point of holding space for people and finding compassion and empathy before we jump into that action mode of, 'just go outside, take a deep breath.'

One of the biggest losses to draw national attention to the issue in recent years was professional snowboarder Ben Lynch, who took his own life in 2021.

Lynch's suicide rocked the snowboarding world, but a childhood friend said it was far from an anomaly. “This is much bigger than just Ben,” he said. 'I lost five people to suicide in eighteen months'

Lynch's suicide rocked the snowboarding world, but a childhood friend said it was far from an anomaly. “This is much bigger than just Ben,” he said. 'I lost five people to suicide in eighteen months'

The suicide rocked the snowboarding community and led to a renewed effort to draw attention to the crisis in the Rockies, which filmmaker Brett Rapkin has turned into the upcoming film “The Paradise Paradox.”

“Once we realized some of the statistics in these mountain areas, particularly in the Rockies, where people were calling it the Suicide Belt, it was like, if we do it right, this is something that can help people,” Rapkin told the Denver Post. .

“The problem seems to be everywhere.”

One of those featured in the film, ski director Bob Holme, said he knew Lynch since he was a child and felt his sad decline sums up the struggles of many in the mountains.

“This is much bigger than just Ben,” he said. “I've lost five people to suicide in 18 months.”

'Everyone will talk about how great it is to live in the mountains with all that snow. When people say, 'What is life like in the mountains?' I said, 'It's really hard,' to be honest,” Holme concluded.

'It feels like it's winter nine months a year. You have to be strong to make it here. That toughness is accompanied by an emotional numbness. People will kind of push it aside and say, “No, it's fine. It snows nine months a year, no problem.' But the cold days and the dark days are starting to add up.'

The plane sat abandoned in a New Mexico desert for almost 40 years until it went up for sale, and now Webb has big plans to convert it into a car and take it on tour across the US.

“To say the least, I’ve never done this before, I don’t see what could go wrong,” he says.

Webb, who is known to turn around abandoned planes, purchased the 1962 Lockheed 1329 Jetstar on what would have been the King of Rock and Roll’s 88th birthday on January 8.

He then transported the plane to his work station in Florida in an attempt to turn it into a camper for a cross-country road trip to raise money for charities.

“I knew this was a unique opportunity,” Webb previously told Fox News.

‘It was the largest financial purchase I have ever made other than a house, and ironically this was more expensive than my house. How crazy is that?’

The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll had purchased the plane for $840,000 in December 1976, less than a year before his death in August 1977.

It subsequently changed hands several times before being removed from service by the FAA in 1983. “Because of FAA regulations, that was the reason it was grounded in the first place. They haven’t changed those regulations and the parts for this plane no longer exist. We don’t have them to fly this plan again,” Webb told Spectrum News after purchasing the plane.

The once 60-foot-long plane was originally lipstick red, but after being exposed to extreme weather, Webb says it has more of a “salmon color.”

“We’re going to paint it, repair it and get it all nice and tidy on the outside,” he revealed.

Although refurbishing the nine-seater aircraft can be expensive, the original cassette player, wood paneling of the cabin and 1970s charm have been preserved.

Webb documents the progress of the worn aircraft and has already successfully repaired the lights.

The exterior of the rusted plane is also getting a makeover, but Webb plans to keep the interior velvet seats, deep-pile carpet and wooden cabin panels.

Webb’s vision for the plane is to turn it into an Elvis mobile – a project he believes could either succeed or fail.

“Maybe we’ll take it to Las Vegas, to Graceland,” Webb added.

From the scraps of the plane not used for the camper, such as the wings and gas tanks, Webb will turn the pieces into Elvis souvenirs to make a profit.

This rare aircraft is one of only 204 aircraft manufactured between 1957 and 1978 in a private partnership between Jetstar and Lockheed.

The opening bid for the 1962 Lockheed 1329 Jetstar was $100,000, but bidding slowly increased.

In Webb’s latest YouTube, he shows how he successfully mounted the plane on its new base, with subsequent jobs including installing a steering column, extending the stairs and stripping the interior.
