A remote area of bushland being searched for the remains of Samantha Murphy is just a stone’s throw from the house where her accused killer was arrested.

Victoria Police launched a new search in the Buninyong Bushland Reserve on Wednesday after saying they had received “new intelligence”.

Despite extensive search efforts by police and volunteers, no trace of the mother-of-three has been found in the six weeks since her disappearance.

The new search area is located along Webbs Hill Road, a one-lane dirt road Two miles from the home in Scotsburn, Patrick Orren Stephenson, 22, was house-sitting with his girlfriend when he was arrested on March 6.

Stephenson was charged with murder the following day, with police claiming he ‘intentionally assaulted’ Mrs Murphy, 51, in Mount Clear on February 4.

The new search area is on Webbs Hill Road, a single-lane unsealed road less than 2km from the Scotsburn home. Patrick Orren Stephenson, 22, (pictured) was house-sitting with his girlfriend Meg Harbor when he was arrested on March 6.

He was taken into custody and police allege he repeatedly refused to cooperate with police in their investigation into Ms Murphy’s remains.

Researchers were originally searching in the vast Woowookarung Regional Park, which is about 10km from the new search area.

The Buningyong Bushland Reserve is a relatively smaller area of bushland with a hidden dam and only a few properties scattered throughout its boundaries.

Police units are stationed in nearby Royal Park as dozens of specialist officers search the reserve.

“The search will focus on an area highlighted by intelligence from a number of sources,” a police statement said.

Members of the public who have been searching for Ms Murphy over the past six weeks have been advised not to take part in the latest search.

All available resources are being used, including missing persons investigators along with specialist officers from the Search and Rescue Unit, Mounted Unit, Dog Brigade, Public Order Response Team and motorcyclists from the Road Policing Command.

Detective Acting Chief Inspector Mark Hatt said police are determined to do ‘everything we can to locate her and return her to her family’.

“Since Samantha’s disappearance, extensive searches have been conducted in the Ballarat area and today we will be focusing on an area of bushland in Buninyong,” he said on Wednesday.

‘We will be using a range of specialist resources, but whilst we search for Samantha’s body we ask that the public do not attempt to take part in today’s search.

‘Hopefully today’s search will aid the investigation or provide further investigative opportunities for police.

“We will also be looking at further searches in the Ballarat area as the investigation progresses.”

The public have been urged to ‘stay away’ as police search for a new location in the hunt for missing mother-of-three Samantha Murphy.

In a major breakthrough for the case, detectives swarmed a Buninyong bush area, just south of Ballarat, on Wednesday to search for Ms Murphy’s body.

Police will allege the 51-year-old mother was murdered by Patrick Stephenson, 22, on February 4 after leaving her Ballarat East home to go for a morning run.

The search is focusing on an area of the Buninyong Bushland Reserve that has been brought to the attention of police from a ‘number of sources’.

‘A range of specialist units will join investigators from the Missing Persons Squad Investigators, including the Search and Rescue Squad, Mounted Branch, Dog Squad, Public Order Response Team and motorcyclists from the Road Policing Command, as well as local police from Western Region,” Victoria Police said.

“As such, police ask that members of the public do not participate in today’s search efforts at this time.”

Ms Murphy’s case has captured the nation’s interest, with hundreds of volunteers organizing and carrying out their own ground surveys in the area over the past six weeks.

The new development comes after extensive searches previously focused on the Canadian Forest, in Ballarat’s south-eastern suburbs.

The search location is just a four-minute drive from the home in Scotsburn where Stephenson was arrested on March 6.

He was in the process of housing the property with his long-term girlfriend at the time.

Stephenson was charged with murder the following day in connection with Ms Murphy’s disappearance.

He was subsequently remanded in custody to appear at the Ballarat Magistrates’ Court on August 8.

MANCHESTER UNITED’S search for a striker has taken a bizarre turn after a surprising new report.

Erik ten Hag’s side spent £72 million on Rasmus Hojlund last summer and the Dane is finally starting to find his feet in front of goal.

Hojlund’s double against Luton in his final appearance extended his scoring streak to six consecutive Premier League games.

That broke a Prem record as he became the youngest player ever to achieve such a feat.

However, that hot streak was cut short when he suffered a knock that ruled him out for three weeks, although he is likely to be back for United’s FA Cup clash with Liverpool on Sunday.

The 21-year-old Dane’s absence has further highlighted the need for reinforcements in attack for the Red Devils, who have been linked with a host of names in recent months.

Now, however, a shocking new player has been thrown into the mix.

According to Index.hrUnited have scouted Dinamo Zagreb’s striker Bruno Petkovic and are eyeing a potential signing for him this summer.

The 29-year-old Croatian international is under contract with Dinamo until 2025, who will reportedly try to cash in on him to avoid losing the ace for nothing in 12 months.

And he could be available for just £4.28m.

The update claims there has been no contact between the two clubs yet, although Dinamo know United scouts were recently on hand to keep an eye on the forward.

Petkovic moved to Dinamo in 2019 after spells at Bologna and Hellas Verona in Italy.

Who could be Man Utd’s next manager after Ten Hag?

Since then, he has scored 45 times in 137 top-flight appearances and has nine goals and three assists domestically this season.

However, he also impressed in the Europa League and is the second top scorer in the competition with seven points.

And he also shone at the 2022 World Cup when he found the net in the quarter-final against Brazil.

Petkovic scored ten goals in 34 appearances for his country.

The alleged killer of Victorian mother Samantha Murphy has not revealed the whereabouts of her body after spending his fourth night behind bars.

Patrick Orren Stephenson, 22, has reserved the right to remain silent since he was charged with Ms Murphy’s murder last Thursday.

It is understood Stephenson has repeatedly refused to co-operate with police and has given no indication of where Ms Murphy’s remains might be, the Sunday Herald Sun reports.

Stephenson was arrested in Scotsburn, about 11 miles from Ms Murphy’s home, last Wednesday and charged with murdering the 51-year-old the following day.

Sunday marks five weeks since Ms Murphy left her Eureka St home for a 7am run on February 4, the same day Stephenson is accused of killing her.

Her family remains desperate for closure, while her husband, Mick Murphy, pleaded with Stephenson on Friday to cooperate with police.

‘We hope that he will change his mind a little and that he will cooperate. That will help bring her home,” he said.

“We’d like some more answers now.”

Victoria Police Chief Constable Shane Patton confirmed on Thursday that Stephenson had not disclosed the location of Ms Murphy’s body.

It is unclear what specific evidence led police to Stephenson’s arrest.

However, it is understood much of Victoria Police’s investigation involved CCTV footage from the East Ballarat area.

Officers recently obtained video of a light industrial and residential area, with homes and businesses on Elsworth, Joseph and Butt streets, showing that police requested their security footage.

Elsworth St leads into bushland managed by Parks Victoria.

It is not known whether the images obtained show Ms. Murphy or other vehicles of interest.

Officers also searched the area, including car detailers, roller doors and gymnasiums.

However, Commissioner Patton revealed that police would not proceed with the planned searches this weekend unless the location of Ms Murphy’s remains was otherwise discovered.

Dedicated volunteers have searched Ballarat bushland for five weeks but have found no trace of the missing mother.

Residents said they saw officers at a house on Yendon No. around 6:30 a.m. Wednesday. 2 Rd, in Scotsburn – the time Stephenson was arrested.

A neighbor claimed officers seized the 22-year-old’s vehicle, a white four-wheel drive.

The car is reportedly being examined by specialist officers.

Shortly after Governor Kathy Hochul announced she would deploy hundreds of National Guard and State Police members to help conduct bag checks on the New York City subway system, questions began to arise about how the plan would work.

How long will the National Guard do this? Is there a violation of rights? What happens if you refuse to have your bag checked?

Here are some answers to those questions:

Yes. Under the Fourth Amendment, which guarantees the right to be protected from unreasonable searches and seizures, a rider can refuse a bag search if police do not have reasonable suspicion that the rider has done something illegal or is carrying a weapon.

On Thursday, Ms. Hochul appeared several times on news shows to explain the initiative. The National Guard and state police, she said, would assist city police officers in checking bags for weapons at the “busiest” stations.

‘This is not a punishment’ she said during an interview on MSNBC. “This is more of a deterrent.”

But she also warned that passengers who refuse to consent to baggage checks would be forced to leave the system.

“Go home,” Ms. Hochul said on Fox 5 New York. ‘We’re not going to search you. You can say no, but you don’t take the subway.”

New York police have been randomly checking bags for nearly two decades, under a program that began after a July 2005 attack in London in which terrorists detonated bombs on three subway trains and a bus, killing 52 people arrived and more than 700 others were injured.

At the Port Authority subway station, police occasionally pull people aside to check their bags, said Tom Harris, a former police inspector and chairman of the Times Square Alliance, a business group.

“I would consider this like any other control on the transportation system,” he said. “Look at the airport. No one is confused about being searched because he or she wants a safe journey.”

But Chris Dunn, the legal director of the New York Civil Liberties Union, said he did not believe it was legal to make submitting to a bag search a condition of riding the subway.

The organization sued the city in 2005 to stop bag checks. A year later, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit ruled that the program was an exception to the Fourth Amendment because it could help prevent terrorist attacks.

However, Ms. Hochul’s plan is not a measure against terrorism, Mr. Dunn said.

Her plan is “a conventional crime-fighting strategy,” he said. “They can’t do these types of searches without probable cause or a search warrant. That is well established.”

Mr. Dunn argued that if the state could cite crime as a reason to conduct such subway searches, it could use the same justification to search the bags of people walking down the street.

He added that if a passenger’s bag was searched and found to contain something illegal, such as drugs, that person could be arrested but could then challenge the arrest on the grounds that he or she felt pressured felt to consent to the search. enter the subway.

“Everyone will make their own decision about how important their principles or their privacy is to them,” Mr Dunn said. “But if we start giving up bits of privacy in this way, it’s a very dangerous slope.”

Some have wondered why the National Guard is being deployed if there is no clear threat of terrorism and if crime on trains is not increasing.

But the troops have previously been used to patrol major transportation hubs in New York City. Security guards regularly patrol Grand Central Terminal, Pennsylvania Station and the Port Authority Bus Terminal. After the October 7 attacks on Israel, they were sent to patrol the subway while officials watched for any threats.

Now, Guard members will be deployed to “key transit hubs” throughout the subway system in an effort to supplement police presence, Ms. Hochul further said. Fox 5 on Thursday. The reinforcements, including additional transit police, will be placed “close to the turnstiles,” she said.

“We are going to take strong action,” she said. ‘There is no search and frisking. There is no stop and frisk. There is no profiling. All this is a deterrent.”

The National Guard — operating in each of the nation’s 50 states, territories and the District of Columbia — is unique within the nation’s military because soldiers typically report to governors.

The New York Army National Guard, with approximately 10,400 soldiers, is a federal reserve force that reports to the governor when not federally mobilized. It is part of the New York State Division of Military and Naval Affairs, which has a total of nearly 20,000 personnel. according to the state.

Guard members can be deployed by governors in many different capacities. At the start of the coronavirus pandemic, National Guard members were deployed across the country to help check temperatures, provide resources to communities devastated by the virus and later to help staff vaccination clinics.

Recently, Ms. Hochul deployed the state National Guard to assist with the city and state response to the migrant crisis. Until September the The state has deployed about 2,000 Guard members to support migrant shelters across the state, including by staffing hotels and emergency response centers in New York City.

The Posse Comitatus Act, passed in 1878, prohibits the use of the army or air force as a domestic police force in most circumstances. However, members of the National Guard are “rarely covered by the Posse Comitatus Act because they usually report to the governor of their state or territory.” according to the Brennan Center for Justicean impartial think tank.

Unless Guard members are called into federal service, they are “free to participate in law enforcement as consistent with state law,” the group said.

In a statement, the governor’s office said the National Guard has no authority to make arrests, but that if there were an “imminent threat,” Guard members could assist law enforcement in detaining a suspect.

Ms Hochul would not say how long the deployment would last.

The aim is to help police prevent violent crime on the subway, where there have been three murders so far this year and several brutal attacks, including the non-fatal stabbing of a conductor last month and an attack Wednesday on a conductor who was hit with a glass bottle as she left a station in the Bronx.

“I’m not going to tell the criminals the day I stop doing this because they’ll be back the next day,” Ms. Hochul said on MSNBC.

Riders Alliance, a public transportation advocacy group, questioned the strategy of placing more armed personnel at stations.

The deployment is part of a five-point plan that would also provide $20 million to fund 10 teams of mental health workers who would help people in crisis in the metro. The perception of danger in the subway system has been inspired in part by several high-profile episodes in which mentally ill homeless people apparently attacked passengers at random.

But Danny Pearlstein, a spokesman for Riders Alliance, asked: What is the standing plan to help homeless people sleeping in subway cars at night?

“People with mental illness and people who are homeless are the most vulnerable in the metro because they are always there,” he said.

Ellen Goldstein, a policy analyst who rides the F train from Brooklyn to Times Square almost every day, said she doesn’t worry much about her personal safety on the train.

Her concerns, she said, are centered on the “disorder” she sees in train cars: beggars, vendors — often migrants — trying to sell candy to passengers, and people sprawled out on the seats, sleeping.

“The subway acts as a shelter,” Ms. Goldstein, 57, said. “I don’t think checking people’s bags is really where we need resources.”

This article is part of our Special Report Women and Leadership which coincides with global events in March celebrating women’s achievements. This conversation has been edited and condensed.

Deborah Julio, 36, has a past that has shaped her role as an advocate for women’s rights and conflict mediator between the southeast African country of Malawi, where she lives, and neighboring Mozambique.

Ms. Julio lost her father when she was 2 years old and dropped out of primary school after losing her mother. She eventually studied to become a minister and now owns a grocery store in her town. Her first husband died in a car accident in 2016 and she has since remarried. Today, she has two stepchildren and three children from her previous marriage. In addition to advocating women’s rights as chairman of the Women’s Movement in Mangochi District, Malawi, and as secretary of the District Peace and Unity Committee (DPUC), Ms. Julio assists in conflict mediation, supported by UN Women Malawi.

Ms. Julio’s work is especially relevant because she lives in an area affected by religious conflict, violence surrounding border disputes, and a high rate of early marriage.

How did you end up becoming a peace mediator?

In 2016 I followed a conflict and peace building training in Mangochi. Then I was selected to become one of the first members of the DPUC, a volunteer group that supports the local council in resolving conflict and building peace. I was chosen as secretary.

UN Women learned about our work and invited me to attend a Women’s Movement training where they provided us with skills to tackle gender-based violence. I was then elected chairman of the Mangochi Women’s Movement group.

What initiatives have you worked on?

They include a row over central government and religious disputes between Muslims and Christians in the district. I also intervened in a possible human trafficking case where a person from Mozambique pretended to have an interest in marrying a community member from Lulanga (in Malawi) but intended to traffic her.

For the Women’s Movement, I have intervened on issues that have the potential to disrupt community peace. For example, in Lulanga there was a case where five boys raped a fourteen-year-old girl. Her parents decided to keep the matter hidden to avoid public embarrassment, but we informed them about the need to take the child to a hospital and also helped them report the matter to the police. The perpetrators are now serving their prison sentences.

There was also a case where a community health worker tried to entice a 14-year-old girl to sleep with him in exchange for a job. The girl needed money to survive. The matter was reported to the chief, who ordered the health worker to leave his area and pay a fine of three goats and 100,000 Malawian Kwacha ($60).

Can you give a specific example where your gender influenced the way you approached conflict mediation?

There was recently an issue in a village in the district where men opposed a woman taking on a leadership role in the community. The village chief led the opposition. I approached him and used my own example as a woman in a leadership role to show him that women can succeed as leaders. A few weeks later I heard that the community had accepted the woman, and that she had now taken over the position.

Can you explain the approach you have taken to prevent tensions from escalating into violence? What role does early warning play in your work?

Historically, some areas have been prone to violence, especially when it comes to land disputes. By monitoring these areas, the Women’s Movement saw undercurrents of tension brewing in a place called Makanjira, along the Mozambican border. We had to intervene when accusations started between two villages around land demarcation.

Before the villagers could mobilize each other to do more damage, we intervened by meeting with leaders from both the Malawian and Mozambican sides. We came up with a solution where communities were given a piece of land. At this time there is no discussion about the boundary for that piece of land. Another positive side is that women and girls are often affected by these border disputes, but in this case, women from both sides are allowed to farm on their designated lands and help support their families.

Tuesday February 6: Mrs. Murphy’s husband, Mick, tells the media that things are “not going that bad under the circumstances.” He was pictured speaking to police as the desperate search continued. A WOMAN who works with the wealthiest university students has revealed she gets the best job perk: dumpster diving.

Britain’s Sally Sparks has taken to social media to show off the mountain of designer items she has rescued from bins, including Gucci bags and designer clothes.

In a recent clip, Sally shared the pieces she saved from the landfill and how she styled them for herself.

Sally revealed that many students simply throw away their belongings when they move – so she always got the first chance at the luxury goods.

A Gucci bag was one of her best finds while rummaging through the bins.

She also found a giant hair bow, an oversized blazer and Li-Ning sneakers worth £180.

Digging through the ‘trash bin’ Sally also found a £200 Armani knitted cardigan, as well as a Acne studio sweater and a fluffy cardigan from Maison Margiela.

The blonde beauty found thousands of pounds worth of designer items to take home for herself, but that’s not all.

Another clamp showed that she also finds some more bizarre (but still expensive) goodies, like full Lego sets and unopened perfumes.

Sally also managed to get a few more designer bags, including Ragged Priest and a Guess weekend bag.

And she found lots of different shoes to take home: from Nike sneakers to cute ballerinas.

The videos posted to her TikTok account @sallysparksx have since gone viral with over 300,000 views.

I went dumpster diving and found an “insane” stash

People were quick to respond in awe of her designer finds.

One person wrote: “THE STUFF IS SOOOO GOOD.”

Dumpster diving in Great Britain

Are you thinking of trying your luck by rummaging through the bins? Here’s what you need to know

Dumpster diving is not illegal in Britain as waste is not considered private property.

You can dumpster dive if the bins are out in the open and on public property and not locked.

However, you may be asked to come along.

Another commented: “Bruh, super jelly, I wish my job had perks like that – the free coffee is too bitter.”

“It seems such a waste! Good thing you saved it,” wrote a third.

Meanwhile, a fourth said: “It’s crazy what the rich just throw away!”

“Love the bag,” claimed a fifth.

Someone else added: “Don’t be shy, drop the locations… which bins are we diving into next one?”

Investigators will look at mobile phone tower data to identify the movements of people in the area where Victorian woman Samantha Murphy disappeared.

The 51-year-old mother of three disappeared on February 4 after leaving her Eureka Street home at 7am to go for a run at Woowookarung Regional Park.

Despite a massive search involving police, SES and numerous volunteers, no trace of the 51-year-old has been found.

Police are to try a new tactic in the search for missing mother-of-three Samantha Murphy.

Detectives are now ready to trace mobile data from the Ballarat area, with particular interest in phones ‘pinging’ from towers covering the area they believe Ms Murphy was in hours after her flight.

The phone records may help investigators identify people of interest and provide new leads as the search for Ms. Murphy continues for 30 days.

However, analyzing cell phone tower data could be challenging in the Murphy case due to the number of people living in the area.

The ‘pinging’ of the phone picks up people traveling in cars on the road and even people cycling or walking on the railway.

Metadata from the phone has been crucial to the investigation after it pinpointed a precise location in the Mount Clear area, about 7km from her home, about an hour into her 14km jog.

Initial reports said Ms Murphy’s phone pinged from Buninyong Tower at 5pm on the day she went missing.

However, that information, which has yet to be confirmed, came within 10 hours of her leaving for her run.

Police said last month that Ms Murphy was unlikely to be found alive while detectives investigate whether her body had been moved.

Detective Acting Chief Inspector Mark Hatt said police were keeping an open mind about Ms Murphy’s disappearance, but said the most likely scenario was that one or more parties were involved.

Police have ruled out any medical episode and there is no indication she left the area on her own.

“Unfortunately, given the time and the fact that we have found no trace of her, we are extremely concerned and highly doubt that she is alive,” Detective Det Supt Hatt said.

Police were also investigating the possibility that Ms Murphy’s body was moved from the spot where she disappeared, he said.

A number of people have been questioned about her disappearance, including family, friends and colleagues, but Detective Hatt is not said to be interested in the number of suspects in the case.

He did clarify that Mrs Murphy’s husband, Mick, is not a suspect ‘at this stage’.

‘Everyone related to Samantha is a person of interest in our investigation. We talk to everyone who was in her life,” he said.

The detective also would not comment on whether police have discovered links to criminal motorcycle gangs or the financial position of the Murphys’ car repair business.

Researchers are reviewing approximately 12,000 hours of CCTV footage and tracking more than 500 separate pieces of information.

Det Supt Hatt sought to reassure Ballarat residents and Victorians more broadly that detectives were doing everything they could to provide answers to Ms Murphy’s family.

‘I would encourage anyone who has information that may be relevant to this investigation, whether it is a person or vehicle seen in the area that day, anything unusual such as a damaged vehicle or property, to come forward and talk to the police or offer assistance. the information through Crime Stoppers,” he said.

Police continue to ask anyone in the Ballarat East and Mount Helen areas to check their CCTV footage for possible sightings over the past three weeks.

Detectives are also urging anyone traveling through the area, especially between 7am and 7pm on Sunday, February 4, who may have dashcam footage, to also check this for possible sightings.

Mrs Murphy is described as mentally and physically fit and was training for an upcoming race by running 15km.
