The best part of a vacation is often checking into a chic hotel and making the most of the blissful surroundings you can call home for the week ahead.

But sometimes resorts don’t look quite the same as in the brochure.

Although disappointing, the bizarre things spotted in hotels can often be funny.

In a nice gallery, Bored Panda has collected images of disgruntled vacationers around the world who were unhappy with their less-than-luxury digs.

From bizarrely placed window fixtures to illegible safety signs, these hotels need drastic improvements.

The gallery also includes a photo of a bath filled with brown water and a swimming pool with an eerily small entrance.

Clean water is essential when staying in a hotel, but one guest was unlucky enough to find his bath water turned brown

One holidaymaker booked a room with a balcony, only to find the view completely boarded up.

In another case, a tourist was annoyed because the curtains in their hotel room did not fit the length of the window frame, ruining their chance of a good night’s sleep.

Elsewhere, another tourist opened his curtains to reveal the unglamorous view of the parking lot.

Safety issues were another concern for other holidaymakers after they heard the window opened from downstairs to the outside and their room was eight floors up.

Here, FEMAIL shares some of the shocking discoveries people made while staying in a hotel…

Charles and Camilla knew in advance

The King and Queen were told the news about Kate’s health beforehand and were aware she was preparing to issue her video message.

Experts and charities praised Kate’s decision to speak out, saying it will encourage others to seek help for their own potential cancer symptoms. Here’s the full story:

Breaking: No edits to Kate’s video message

No edits were made to the Princess of Wales’s video message announcing her cancer diagnosis, it is understood.

The PA news agency has told MailOnline it understands BBC Studios made no edits to the recording, had no editorial input into the message and were not involved in the finished film’s distribution.

Kate’s video address to the nation follows days of speculation after a ‘manipulated’ photo of the princess with her children was posted on social media.

BBC Studios said: ‘BBC Studios filmed a message from the Princess of Wales at Windsor this week. We would like to wish Her Royal Highness a speedy recovery.’

It is understood the production team were asked to film the message after working on broadcasts of the King’s coronation and the late Queen’s funeral.

According to its website, BBC Studios, the principal commercial arm of the BBC group, is responsible for generating revenue and profits which are returned to the BBC to support the licence fee.

Giovanna Fletcher’s ‘love from me and mine’

Author and podcast host Giovanna Fletcher has sent the Princess of Wales and her family ‘so much love from me and mine’.

Kate appeared on Fletcher’s parenting podcast, Happy Mum Happy Baby, in 2020.

Commenting on a video posted to The Prince and Princess of Wales’ official Instagram account, Fletcher wrote: ‘Sending you and the family so much love from me and mine. Take all the time you need knowing there’s so much love and respect behind you.’

More politicians send messages to Kate

Other politicians have been sending messages of support to the Princess of Wales this evening.

Home Secretary James Cleverly said: ‘Hoping that she has a speedy and complete recovery and privacy and calm while she does.’

Chancellor Jeremy Hunt added: ‘All my thoughts and prayers are with our courageous Princess of Wales.

‘Such incredibly tough news to break to three young children – let’s give them the space and privacy they need to protect their family and focus on getting better.”

And Commons Speaker Sir Lindsay Hoyle sent well wishes on behalf of the House, saying Kate’s ‘candour will make such a difference to all those facing this dreadful disease’.

The Princess of Wales’s deeply moving message announcing she has cancer is just the latest instance of the royals opening up about health battles since the start of the King’s reign. Read the full story on MailOnline:

Leading oncologist praises ‘brave’ Kate

A leading oncologist has said the Princess of Wales is ‘so brave’ for speaking about her cancer diagnosis ahead of more ‘difficult’ treatment.

Professor Pat Price, chair of Radiotherapy UK, said ‘fear of the unknown’ can be the ‘worst thing’ for those who find out they have the disease.

Speaking to BBC News, she added: ‘She is amazing. She’s got to go through some more treatment which will be difficult.

‘Once (cancer) is caught early, that’s usually when we can cure it.’

The private hospital where Kate was treated offers its own concierge, meat from Smithfields market and fish from Cornish boats, while counting Prince Philip, Liz Taylor and John F Kennedy as former patients.

Love Island’s Dr Alex George praises Kate

Former Love Island contestant Dr Alex George, who campaigns on mental health issues and hosted a panel discussion with The Prince and Princess of Wales last year, was among those wishing Kate a ‘speedy recovery’.

Commenting on a video posted to The Prince and Princess of Wales’ official Instagram account, George said: ‘Sending love and best wishes. You were so amazing when I met you for World Mental Health Day. I wish you a speedy recovery.’

Expert explains preventive chemotherapy

Prof Andrew Beggs, consultant colorectal surgeon at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham, said preventive chemotherapy was “a bit like mopping a floor with bleach when you’ve spilt something on it, chemotherapy kills any spilt cells”.

He said the timeframe for chemotherapy treatment was “hugely variable”, adding that it was given “traditionally between four and six ‘cycles’ (blocks) of chemo, each cycle lasting 21 days and consisting of a day or few days of chemo.”

He added there would then be “time for the body to recover from it, while the chemo keeps damaging the cancer cell. There are also some which are daily, some which are four-weekly, and some which are two-weekly.”

Side-effects of chemotherapy occur because healthy cells are damaged alongside any cancer cells. Treatment can therefore make people feel very tired and nauseous, and cause them to vomit and lose their hair.

Fans of the Princess of Wales have flooded social media with get well messages after her shock announcement that she is battling cancer. Read them in this article on MailOnline:

Buckingham Palace statement from Charles

Buckingham Palace said the King is ‘so proud of Catherine for her courage in speaking as she did’.

Following their time in hospital together, the King has ‘remained in the closest contact with his beloved daughter-in-law throughout the past weeks.’

Both Charles and Camilla ‘will continue to offer their love and support to the whole family through this difficult time’.’

Difficult year for Royal Family continues

The Princess of Wales’s cancer announcement marks the latest blow to the royal family over the past year, including the King also being diagnosed with the disease.

In February, Buckingham Palace confirmed that Charles had been diagnosed with a form of cancer, which is not prostate cancer, that was discovered while the King was being treated at the private London Clinic for an enlarged prostate.

During a visit to Northern Ireland this week (pictured below), the Queen said the King is ‘doing very well’ and sent his ‘very, very best wishes’ to the First and deputy First Minister.

The King has postponed public-facing duties but is said to be continuing to work behind the scenes on his red boxes – his state business and official papers.

Sarah, Duchess of York, became the third royal in quick succession to announce a medical procedure at the beginning of 2024, when she revealed a diagnosis of malignant melanoma, a form of skin cancer.

In late February, tragedy befell Prince Michael’s family when Thomas Kingston, the husband of Michael’s daughter, Lady Gabriella Windsor, died from a ‘catastrophic head injury’ with a gun close to his body.

Why William pulled out of Constanine’s service

The Prince of Wales pulled out of a memorial service for his godfather King Constantine of Greece following his wife’s cancer diagnosis, it is understood.

At the time of the service, Kensington Palace said William’s decision not to attend was due to a ‘personal matter’ but gave no further details.

The palace said the Princess of Wales was recovering from abdominal surgery and continuing to do well ahead of the memorial last month on February 27 (pictured).

William, who was due to deliver a reading, called the Greek royal family who attended the service in St George’s Chapel to let them know he was unable to attend. Constantine’s eldest son Crown Prince Pavlos stepped in to give the reading in his place.

William’s late godfather Constantine died at the age of 82 in January last year, decades after being toppled from the throne in a military coup. Constantine was also godfather to Prince and Princess of Michael of Kent’s daughter Lady Gabriella Kingston.

Latest on the Kate hospital ‘data breach’

The top private hospital where the Princess of Wales was treated before her cancer diagnosis was investigated for a royal data breach this week.

Kate is being treated for cancer after undergoing abdominal surgery at The London Clinic on January 16 this year. Earlier this week the Daily Mirror reported that at least one worker at the clinic had looked at her medical records without authorisation.

A probe was launched into the hospital which has a longstanding history of treating royals, actors and politicians. The London Clinic’s chief executive, Al Russell said “all appropriate investigatory, regulatory and disciplinary steps will be taken”.

The UK’s privacy and data watchdog, the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO), said: “We can confirm that we have received a breach report and are assessing the information provided.”

Kensington Palace declined to comment on the alleged incident, and we await the findings of the ongoing investigations.

When Kate spoke of her ‘always active’ family

The Princess of Wales is known for being fit, sporty and competitive at team games. She enjoys playing tennis and is a fan of cold water swimming.

In an interview last September with former rugby international Mike Tindall, who is married to her husband’s cousin Zara, she said her family were ‘always active’.

‘I suppose as a family we were just very active,’ she said.

‘And I can always remember being physical, using our bodies, whether it’s walking, climbing the lake district in Scotland… swimming from a young age.

‘(My parents) always encouraged us to be physically active and sporty and they always encouraged us into doing team sports and trying things.’

Kate also revealed that she enjoys cold water swimming.

‘Cold swimming – the colder, the better. I absolutely love it,’ she said. ‘Slightly to the point where William’s (saying) ‘You’re crazy’ and it’s dark and it’s raining. I will go and seek out cold water. I love it.’

Catherine Elizabeth Middleton was born to Carole and Michael Middleton at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in Reading on January 9, 1982.

She was christened at the parish church of St Andrew’s Bradfield in Berkshire on June 20 the same year.

Amman in Jordan was home to Kate and her family for a few years in the mid-1980s, where she attended a nursery school from the age of three, before the family returned to Berkshire.

At 13, she went to the exclusive private Marlborough College in Wiltshire, where she part-boarded.

She graduated in 2005 with a 2:1 in history of art from St Andrews University, where she met and began dating William, whom she married at Westminster Abbey in 2011.

NHS chief is sorry to hear ‘shocking news’

The head of the NHS has said she is sorry to hear the ‘shocking news’ of the Princess of Wales’ cancer diagnosis and has praised her bravery.

NHS chief executive, Amanda Pritchard, said ‘speaking out about it is really brave’ and could help other people in a similar situation.

Ms Pritchard said in a statement: ‘On behalf of the NHS, I’m really sorry to hear this shocking news. Our thoughts are with the Princess of Wales and the Royal Family, especially while her treatment continues.

‘We know how difficult a diagnosis and treatment journey can be for patients and their families. Speaking out about it is really brave and it can help others to get worrying signs and symptoms checked.

How does chemotherapy work?

Chemotherapy works by killing existing cancer cells and can help prevent the disease coming back.

There are many different types of chemotherapy, but the most common types are tablets and liquids that are put directly into the vein (intravenous chemotherapy).

Chemotherapy can be given before or after surgery, or on its own. It can also be given in a palliative way, when the cancer has spread and chemotherapy is not being used to cure the disease, but it helps ease symptoms.

Chemotherapy can be used even when surgeons believe they have removed all the cancer, owing to the risk the disease might come back. This can lower the risk of a cancer recurrence or a new cancer.

Royal Family members have put on the bravest of faces in recent days, continuing with their public duty as normal, ahead of Kate’s announcement today.

She said: ‘The Princess of Wales is an amazing patron for Action for Children, always engaging with the children, young people and families she meets at our services.

‘We want her to know we are thinking of her at this very challenging time and send her our love and support.

‘Our staff join me in sending our very best wishes to her and her family and wish her a full recovery.’

It remains to be seen whether Prince Harry will fly back to the UK to be with the Princess of Wales after she announced her shock cancer diagnosis.

The Duke of Sussex, 39, described Kate as the ‘big sister I never had’ when she became engaged to William 11 years ago, but their relationship has fractured following the bitter aftermath of Megxit.

Harry returned almost immediately to London last month when his father King Charles phoned him to inform his son about his own cancer diagnosis, before the pair had a brief meeting at Clarence House. Read the full story on MailOnline:

When will we see Kate again?

The Princess of Wales is expected to remain out of the public eye for the time being.

Kensington Palace said: ‘The Princess will return to official duties when she is cleared to do so by her medical team. She is in good spirits and is focused on making a full recovery.’

It is understood she may be keen to attend events as and when she feels able to, in line with medical advice. Any initial public events will not necessarily signal a return to a regular public schedule.

A source added that she is in good spirits and focused on her recovery. She is hugely grateful to the medical team for the care they are providing to her and now needs to take the time and space to complete her treatment and make a full recovery.

The Princess of Wales has touchingly revealed how she is reassuring her young children amid her battle with cancer after the announcement she is fighting the disease.

The mother-of-three says she and Prince William have explained the situation to their children George, Charlotte and Louis, after the ‘huge shock’ of her diagnosis.

Kate said had told them she is doing ‘well and getting stronger every day’ and that she was ‘focusing on the things that will help me heal’. Read the full story on MailOnline:

The Mail understands that Prince William will carry out engagements when the children return to school after the Easter holidays.

A spokesman said: ‘The Prince will continue to balance supporting his wife and family and maintaining his official duties as he has done since the start of the year. ‘

A source emphasised that this has been a difficult period for the Wales family.

William has been focused on supporting his wife and children, while continuing to undertake engagements and work, and is extremely grateful for the support from the public.

Is Kate being treated by the NHS or privately?

It has not been confirmed whether the princess is being treated on the NHS or privately.

However in selecting healthcare providers for The Princess, a balance of factors would have been considered by her medical team.

These include the most appropriate specialists for the condition, and the potential impact on other patients or on the resources of their healthcare providers and the privacy and security of the princess.

Kensington Palace have said they understand the worldwide interested the princess’s announcement would generate but have stressed that they will only provide an update when there is something significant to say in order to allow her to continue her treatment in private.

Rishi Sunak: Kate has ‘love and support’ of UK

Rishi Sunak praised the Princess of Wales’s ‘tremendous bravery’ after she announced she was undergoing treatment for cancer.

The Prime Minister said Kate had been ‘unfairly treated’ and ‘subjected to intense scrutiny’ in recent weeks and called for her to be given the privacy to focus on her recovery and be with her family. Here is his statement:

The Princess of Wales today said she was ‘going to be OK’ as she bravely opened up about her cancer diagnosis. Here, MailOnline details her health history.

Reasons behind announcement scheduling

It is understood that the Princess wanted the time and space to come to terms with her diagnosis, to recover from her surgery and to then begin her pathway to recovery.

Throughout this period, Kate and William’s three young children have been their priority.

They wanted to be able to tell them at a time that was right for them and to allow them to understand and process the news before it became public, it is understood.

With the children now away from school on their Easter holidays, the couple feel now is the right time to share their update.

King Charles and Queen Camilla have both been informed of their ‘beloved daughter in law’ Kate Middleton’s cancer diagnosis .

The King is continuing his battle with cancer as the Princess of Wales revealed she is also fighting the disease. Read the full story on MailOnline:

Why did Kensington Palace wait until now?

It is understood that the announcement about Kate was not made tonight because of unpleasant social media speculation about her health and whereabouts – although that has been upsetting and unpleasant for the Princess.

The reason given for the scheduling of the announcement was because her children, Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, eight, and Prince Louis, five, broke up from school today, which gave them the opportunity to take them away privately and protect them from the inevitable public shock.

In a brave address to the nation, Kate shared an incredible and inspirational message of hope to fellow cancer sufferers, telling them: ‘Please do not lose faith or hope. You are not alone.’

She thanked the public for their ‘wonderful messages of support’ and said that having her husband William by her side was a ‘great source of comfort and reassurance’.

Kensington Palace say they will not be sharing details of what kind of cancer the Princess of Wales has, or what stage of cancer it is, and has strongly asked people not to speculate.

The Princess of Wales has been diagnosed with cancer after two months of recuperation at home following major abdominal surgery.

Kate’s absence from public life as she convalesced had led to wild theories about her wellbeing, despite her being photographed four times in less than three weeks.

Now, today’s announcement revealed she has had ‘preventative’ chemotherapy – and it comes after King Charles III was diagnosed with cancer last month.

Here, MailOnline looks back at the last few months of royal news that led up to the dramatic news issued by Kensington Palace today:

When was Kate’s cancer discovered?

The Princess of Wales’ cancer was discovered only after she underwent major abdominal surgery at the London Clinic in January.

At the time Kensington Palace said that it was non-cancerous.

They have confirmed again tonight that is the case and that no tests had confirmed the presence of cancer.

However post-operative tests subsequently found that cancer ‘had been present’.

The Princess of Wales has announced she is undergoing chemotherapy treatment for cancer, saying in an emotional video message: ‘I am well and getting stronger every day.’

Here is the full story from MailOnline’s chief reporter Martin Robinson:

Welcome to MailOnline’s liveblog on Kate

The Princess of Wales has just announced that she has been diagnosed with cancer and is undergoing ‘preventative’ chemotherapy.

In a deeply emotional video message, filmed at Windsor on Wednesday, Kate revealed the news had come as a ‘huge shock’.

General Motors said Friday it had stopped sharing details of how people drove their cars with two data brokers that created risk profiles for the insurance industry.

The decision followed a New York Times report this month that GM had been sharing data on drivers’ mileage, braking, acceleration and speed with the insurance industry for years. The drivers were enrolled — some unknowingly, they said — in OnStar Smart Driver, a feature in GM’s Internet-connected cars that collected data about how the car was driven and promised feedback and digital badges for good driving behavior.

Some drivers said their insurance rates increased as a result of the data collected, which GM shared with two brokers, LexisNexis Risk Solutions and Verisk. The companies then sold the data to insurance companies.

As of Wednesday, “OnStar Smart Driver customer data is no longer shared with LexisNexis or Verisk,” GM spokeswoman Malorie Lucich said in an emailed statement. “Customer trust is a priority for us and we are actively reviewing our privacy processes and policies.”

Romeo Chicco, a Florida man whose insurance rates nearly doubled after his Cadillac collected his driving records, filed a complaint this month seeking class-action status against GM, OnStar and LexisNexis.

An internal document reviewed by The Times found that more than eight million vehicles were included in Smart Driver as of 2022. An employee familiar with the program said the company’s annual revenue from Smart Driver was in the low millions of dollars.

Kenn Dahl says he has always been a careful driver. The owner of a software company near Seattle, he drives a leased Chevrolet Bolt. He’s never been responsible for an accident.

So Mr. Dahl, 65, was surprised in 2022 when the cost of his car insurance jumped by 21 percent. Quotes from other insurance companies were also high. One insurance agent told him his LexisNexis report was a factor.

LexisNexis is a New York-based global data broker with a “Risk Solutions” division that caters to the auto insurance industry and has traditionally kept tabs on car accidents and tickets. Upon Mr. Dahl’s request, LexisNexis sent him a 258-page “consumer disclosure report,” which it must provide per the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

What it contained stunned him: more than 130 pages detailing each time he or his wife had driven the Bolt over the previous six months. It included the dates of 640 trips, their start and end times, the distance driven and an accounting of any speeding, hard braking or sharp accelerations. The only thing it didn’t have is where they had driven the car.

On a Thursday morning in June for example, the car had been driven 7.33 miles in 18 minutes; there had been two rapid accelerations and two incidents of hard braking.

According to the report, the trip details had been provided by General Motors — the manufacturer of the Chevy Bolt. LexisNexis analyzed that driving data to create a risk score “for insurers to use as one factor of many to create more personalized insurance coverage,” according to a LexisNexis spokesman, Dean Carney. Eight insurance companies had requested information about Mr. Dahl from LexisNexis over the previous month.

“It felt like a betrayal,” Mr. Dahl said. “They’re taking information that I didn’t realize was going to be shared and screwing with our insurance.”

In recent years, insurance companies have offered incentives to people who install dongles in their cars or download smartphone apps that monitor their driving, including how much they drive, how fast they take corners, how hard they hit the brakes and whether they speed. But “drivers are historically reluctant to participate in these programs,” as Ford Motor put it in a patent application that describes what is happening instead: Car companies are collecting information directly from internet-connected vehicles for use by the insurance industry.

Sometimes this is happening with a driver’s awareness and consent. Car companies have established relationships with insurance companies, so that if drivers want to sign up for what’s called usage-based insurance — where rates are set based on monitoring of their driving habits — it’s easy to collect that data wirelessly from their cars.

But in other instances, something much sneakier has happened. Modern cars are internet-enabled, allowing access to services like navigation, roadside assistance and car apps that drivers can connect to their vehicles to locate them or unlock them remotely. In recent years, automakers, including G.M., Honda, Kia and Hyundai, have started offering optional features in their connected-car apps that rate people’s driving. Some drivers may not realize that, if they turn on these features, the car companies then give information about how they drive to data brokers like LexisNexis.

Automakers and data brokers that have partnered to collect detailed driving data from millions of Americans say they have drivers’ permission to do so. But the existence of these partnerships is nearly invisible to drivers, whose consent is obtained in fine print and murky privacy policies that few read.

Especially troubling is that some drivers with vehicles made by G.M. say they were tracked even when they did not turn on the feature — called OnStar Smart Driver — and that their insurance rates went up as a result.

“GM’s OnStar Smart Driver service is optional to customers,” a G.M. spokeswoman, Malorie Lucich, said. “Customer benefits include learning more about their safe driving behaviors or vehicle performance that, with their consent, may be used to obtain insurance quotes. Customers can also unenroll from Smart Driver at any time.”

Even for those who opt in, the risks are far from clear. I have a G.M. car, a Chevrolet. I went through the enrollment process for Smart Driver; there was no warning or prominent disclosure that any third party would get access to my driving data.

“I am surprised,” said Frank Pasquale, a law professor at Cornell University. “Because it’s not within the reasonable expectation of the average consumer, it should certainly be an industry practice to prominently disclose that is happening.”

Policymakers have expressed concern about the collection of sensitive information from consumers’ cars. California’s privacy regulator is currently investigating automakers’ data collection practices. Last month, Senator Edward Markey of Massachusetts also urged the Federal Trade Commission to investigate.

“The ‘internet of things’ is really intruding into the lives of all Americans,” Senator Markey said in an interview. “If there is now a collusion between automakers and insurance companies using data collected from an unknowing car owner that then raises their insurance rates, that’s, from my perspective, a potential per se violation of Section 5 of the Federal Trade Commission Act.”

That is the federal law that prohibits unfair and deceptive business practices that harm consumers.

Mr. Dahl shared his experience on an online forum for Chevy Bolt enthusiasts, on a thread where other people expressed shock to find that LexisNexis had their driving data. Warnings about the tracking are scattered across online discussion boards dedicated to vehicles manufactured by G.M. — including Corvettes, a sports car designed for racking up “acceleration events.” (One driver lamented having data collected during a “track day,” while testing out the Corvette’s limits on a professional racetrack.)

Numerous people on the forums complained about spiking premiums as a result. A Cadillac driver in Palm Beach County, Fla., who asked not to be named because he is considering a lawsuit against G.M., said he was denied auto insurance by seven companies in December. When he asked an agent why, she advised him to pull his LexisNexis report. He discovered six months of his driving activity, including many instances of hard braking and hard accelerating, as well as some speeding.

“I don’t know the definition of hard brake. My passenger’s head isn’t hitting the dash,” he said. “Same with acceleration. I’m not peeling out. I’m not sure how the car defines that. I don’t feel I’m driving aggressively or dangerously.”

When he finally obtained car insurance, through a private broker, it was double what he had previously been paying.

The Cadillac owner, Mr. Dahl and the drivers on the forums had all been enrolled in OnStar Smart Driver. OnStar is G.M.’s Internet-connected service for its cars and Smart Driver is a free, gamified feature within G.M.’s connected car apps (all part of OnStar, but branded MyChevrolet, MyBuick, MyGMC and MyCadillac).

Smart Driver can “help you become a better driver,” according to a corporate website, by tracking and rating seatbelt use and driving habits. In a recent promotional campaign, an Instagram influencer used Smart Driver in a competition with her husband to find out who could collect the most digital badges, such as “brake genius” and “limit hero.”

In response to questions from The New York Times, G.M. confirmed that it shares “select insights” about hard braking, hard accelerating, speeding over 80 miles an hour and drive time of Smart Driver enrollees with LexisNexis and another data broker that works with the insurance industry called Verisk.

Customers turn on Smart Driver, said Ms. Lucich, the G.M. spokeswoman, “at the time of purchase or through their vehicle mobile app.” It is possible that G.M. drivers who insisted they didn’t opt in were unknowingly signed up at the dealership, where salespeople can receive bonuses for successful enrollment of customers in OnStar services, including Smart Driver, according to a company manual.

The Cadillac owner in Florida said he had not heard of Smart Driver and never noticed it in the MyCadillac app. He reviewed the paperwork he signed at the dealership when he bought his Cadillac in the fall of 2021 and found no mention of signing up for it.

“When a customer accepts the user terms and privacy statement (which are separately reviewed in the enrollment flow), they consent to sharing their data with third parties,” Ms. Lucich wrote in an email, pointing to OnStar’s privacy statement.

But that statement’s section on “third-party business relationships” does not mention Smart Driver. It names SiriusXM as a company G.M. might share data with, not LexisNexis Risk Solutions, which G.M. has partnered with since 2019.

A driver who was surprised to discover that he was enrolled in Smart Driver posted a screenshot of his low score to an online forum for Corvette drivers in 2022.Credit…The New York Times

Jen Caltrider, a researcher at Mozilla who reviewed the privacy policies for more than 25 car brands last year, said that drivers have little idea about what they are consenting to when it comes to data collection. She said it is “impossible for consumers to try and understand” the legalese-filled policies for car companies, their connected services and their apps. She called cars “a privacy nightmare.”

“The car companies are really good at trying to link these features to safety and say they are all about safety,” Ms. Caltrider said. “They’re about making money.”

Neither the car companies nor the data brokers deny that they are engaged in this practice, though automakers say the main purpose of their driver feedback programs is to help people develop safer driving habits.

After LexisNexis and Verisk get data from consumers’ cars, they sell information about how people are driving to insurance companies. To access it, the insurance companies must get consent from the drivers — say, when they go out shopping for car insurance and sign off on boilerplate language that gives insurance companies the right to pull third-party reports. (Insurance companies commonly ask for access to a consumer’s credit or risk reports, though they are barred from doing so in California, Massachusetts, Michigan and Hawaii.)

An employee familiar with G.M.’s Smart Driver said the company’s annual revenue from the program is in the low millions of dollars.

LexisNexis Risk Solutions, which retains consumers’ driving data for six months, has “strict privacy and security policies designed to ensure that data is not accessed or used impermissibly,” the company said in a statement.

Verisk provides insurers with trip data and a risk score “approved by insurance regulators in 46 states and the District of Columbia,” said a spokeswoman, Amy Ebenstein. Automakers that Verisk gets data from “provide their customers notice and obtain appropriate consents,” she said.

Some drivers who had Smart Driver turned on, though, said they did not even realize they were enrolled until they saw warnings on online forums and then checked their app. They quickly unenrolled themselves by turning off Smart Driver in their car app.

Omri Ben-Shahar, a law professor at the University of Chicago, said he was in favor of usage-based insurance — where insurers monitor mileage and driving habits to determine premiums — because people who are knowingly monitored are better drivers. “People drive differently,” he said. “The impact on safety is enormous.”

But he was troubled, he said, by “stealth enrollment” in programs with “surprising and potentially injurious” data collection. There is no public safety benefit if people don’t know that how they drive will affect how much they pay for insurance.

General Motors is not the only automaker sharing driving behavior. Kia, Subaru and Mitsubishi also contribute to the LexisNexis “Telematics Exchange,” a “portal for sharing consumer-approved connected car data with insurers.” As of 2022, the exchange, according to a LexisNexis news release, has “real-world driving behavior” collected “from over 10 million vehicles.”

Verisk also claims to have access to data from millions of vehicles and partnerships with major automakers, including Ford, Honda and Hyundai.

Two of these automakers said they were not sharing data or only limited data. Subaru shares odometer data with LexisNexis for Subaru customers who turn on Starlink and authorize that data be shared “when shopping for auto insurance,” said a spokesman, Dominick Infante.

Ford “does not transmit any connected vehicle data to either partner,” said a spokesman, Alan Hall, but partnered with them “to explore ways to support customers” who want to take part in usage-based insurance programs. Ford will share driving behavior from a car directly with an insurance company, he said, when a customer gives explicit consent via an in-vehicle touch screen.

The other automakers all have optional driver-coaching features in their apps — Kia, Mitsubishi and Hyundai have “Driving Score,” while Honda and Acura have “Driver Feedback” — that, when turned on, collect information about people’s mileage, speed, braking and acceleration that is then shared with LexisNexis or Verisk, the companies said in response to questions from The New York Times.

Honda says driver data will not be shared without consent, but the user needs to read through a 2,000-word “terms and conditions” screen to see that the company is sharing data with Verisk.Credit…Honda

But that would not be evident or obvious to drivers using these features. In fact, before a Honda owner activates Driver Feedback, a screen titled “Respect for your Privacy” assures drivers that “your data will never be shared without your consent.” But it is shared — with Verisk, a fact disclosed in a more than 2,000-word “terms and conditions” screen that a driver needs to click “accept” on. (Kia, by contrast, does highlight its relationship with LexisNexis Risk Solutions on its website, and a spokesman said LexisNexis can’t share driving score data of Kia participants with insurers without additional consent.)

Drivers who have realized what is happening are not happy. The Palm Beach Cadillac owner said he would never buy another car from G.M. He is planning to sell his Cadillac.

Hello everyone, and welcome to our special segment. Today we dive deeper into the recent developments in Odisha’s political landscape,…

Hello everyone, and welcome to our special segment. Today we take a deeper dive into the recent developments in Odisha’s political landscape, where the BJP is hinting at contesting the upcoming Lok Sabha elections on its own as talks of an alliance with the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) face hurdles .”

Before we dig deeper, let’s get some context. Odisha, known for its dynamic political scenario, has seen the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) making strides in recent years and challenging the long-standing dominance of the BJD, led by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik.”

In a surprising turn of events, the BJP has hinted at the possibility of contesting the Lok Sabha elections on its own, signaling a rift in alliance talks with the BJD. This comes as an important development considering the historical context of political alliances in the state.”

So why is the BJP considering going solo? According to party sources, there appear to be disagreements on key issues ranging from seat-sharing arrangements to policy priorities. The BJP may believe that an independent run will give them more autonomy to pursue their agenda and engage directly with voters.”

On the other hand, how has the BJD responded to this development? While official statements are yet to be released, insiders suggest that the BJD is re-evaluating its election strategy and considering alternative alliances or even a solo run in certain constituencies.”

Now let’s look at the potential impact of these developments. A solo move by the BJP could lead to a multi-faceted struggle, which would change the traditional political dynamics in the state. This, in turn, could impact the final outcome of the Lok Sabha elections in Odisha.

As the political drama unfolds in Odisha, it is clear that the alliance talks between the BJP and the BJD have hit a major hurdle. Whether this results in a solo run by the BJP or a re-evaluation of strategies by both parties remains to be seen. Stay tuned for further updates as the political landscape in Odisha continues to evolve.”

She also stood up so fans could get a good look at her entire outfit.

Her leather miniskirt had crossed laces on the sides and an intricate belt.

The TV star pulled a fluffy black fur coat over her shoulders as she placed her hands on her hips boss-style, as if she were a woman in charge.

Meanwhile, her husband Justin Timberlake said she is simply “the best.”

The singer-songwriter and actor made the heartfelt announcement while paying tribute to his wife of more than 11 years on her 42nd birthday on Sunday with a sweet video montage of the actress set to Tina Turner’s classic song The Best.

The clip also shows the couple during some of their most endearing moments together over the years, as well as their two sons Phineas, three, and Silas, eight.

‘There’s no other way to say it. You’re the best. I love you. Happy birthday,” the SexyBack star said of Biel in the caption.

Being a thoughtful husband and father, Timberlake noticed his wife’s birthday post, in which she wore a black leather skirt, matching sweater, sheer stockings, platform heels and a faux fur coat over her shoulders, and he left a heart-eye emoji comment.

As for his own video, it shows Biel playing her many different roles in life as a wife, mother, actress and friend, all while showing off her sense of style.

The first shots of his leading lady show her doing a martial arts spin kick and hitting the weights hard in the gym.

There’s also a sweet moment where she gives one of her boys a big bear hug while in her arms.

In another photo, she struck the perfect modeling pose, while another showed her nailing a balcony walkway.

Towards the end of the clip, the Memphis, Tennessee native added several photos and videos of the couple sharing special moments together and giving each other hugs and kisses.

Biel and Timberlake started dating in January 2007 after meeting at a private club’s surprise party, according to the Economic times.

It wasn’t long before they met again when Biel attended one of Timberlake’s shows.

From there, they started talking over the phone, creating a special bond that led them to the October 2012 wedding ceremony at the Borgo Egnazia resort in Fasano, Italy.

A woman has caused a stir after leaving an obnoxious passenger in the seat – who turned out to be a child – on their daytime flight.

The content creator, Umaymah, who lives in Dubai, posted the 8-second clip on TikTok, showing her controversial response.

In the video, which has been viewed more than 16.3 million times, Umaymah sits in her seat on the plane with the sunshade up and the light coming in.

But as she sits there, a small hand reaches back from behind the front seat and deftly closes the blinds – despite it being the window closest to her seat.

The content creator, Umaymah, who lives in Dubai, posted an 8-second clip on TikTok showing the controversial situation.

From there, a game of tug-of-war was secured in front of the windows, with the young boy reaching back again to close the blinds, only for Umaymah to stop him by putting her hand in the way to stop him.

“It’s my window,” she indignantly captioned the video.

“He had HIS OWN WINDOW,” she added.

Users were divided over her reaction to the child closing the blinds. Some agreed that she had jurisdiction over the window, while others thought she should be more lenient because her seatmate was just a child.

“When I sit next to a window, I want to look out the window,” one TikTok user commented. “Who closes the window on a daytime flight?”

“What if they’re trying to sleep,” another asked.

“You know he’s trying to do that because he’s getting glare on his iPad,” one person joked.

Others felt that Umaymah had no right to decide whether the window was open or closed.

“It’s not your window though,” one user countered.

“Please let brother close the window, he’s probably trying to sleep,” another complained.

Last year, a flight attendant went viral after sharing her annoyances about her work life.

She denounced parents who let their children loose on planes as something that strains her gears especially when she’s at work.

The flight attendant said, “I’m a parent myself, but when people let their kids put stickers on the plane or draw on it or leave a dirty diaper in the back seat pocket, I’m shocked.”

In addition to these pet hates, Natalie says it’s also annoying when people don’t wear headphones while watching or listening to something.

She said: ‘They expect everyone to be subjected to their music or what they watch.

Despite these problems, Natalie loves her job and believes that not all passengers are bad, and that even a simple thank you can make her day.

She said: “Honestly, when people say ‘thank you’ when they get off the plane [it is really great].
