Taylor Swift was welcomed to Brazil on Thursday by a projection that made Rio de Janeiro’s world-famous Christ the Redeemer statue appear as if it were dressed in a T-shirt similar to the one she carried inside her The music video “You Belong to Me” was decorated with symbols from her songs.

But that warm welcome was followed by tragedy and trouble.

A fan died in the sweltering heat at Friday night’s show in Rio de Janeiro. At 11 a.m., Ms. Swift postponed her Saturday show until Monday, much to the dismay of thousands of fans who had already begun to fill the stadium. Military police said a fan who was in Rio de Janeiro earlier that morning for Sunday’s regular concert was stabbed to death.

The fatal accident and other issues were a departure from Ms.’s triumphant first leg. Swift’s Eras Tour, a career-spanning production that broke records in North America. As the tour’s second show in Rio de Janeiro approached on Sunday night, fans struggled with failed travel plans, extreme heat and disappointment.

Anne Di Motta, 30, a psychologist in São Paulo, Brazil, was scheduled to attend the Saturday night show and said she would return home before the rescheduled concert on Monday because she had to work.

“I have been waiting for the last 17 years for the chance to go, to fulfill my teenage dream of meeting someone I have known since her first single,” Ms Di Motta said. “And to sit in a chair for three hours, completely drenched in sweat, having to overcome several personal challenges to be there all alone, to receive the news that it had been canceled – it was completely devastating.”

The Saturday night show was postponed because of the extreme temperatures, Ms. Swift said in an Instagram post hours before the concert was scheduled to start at an outdoor soccer stadium. “The safety and well-being of my fans, fellow artists and crew must and will always come first,” she said.

At that point, thousands of fans had traveled to see Ms. Swift, enduring the day’s peak heat, which reached 93 degrees Fahrenheit, or 33 degrees Celsius, before being asked to leave the venue.

A representative for Ms. Swift did not immediately respond to emailed questions about the Saturday show’s postponement.

Julia Alvarenga, a social media influencer, was at the stage when the concert was postponed and said in a video widely shared online that she had arrived for the show at 11am. “Taylor Swift, I’m wearing a geriatric diaper that won’t even close me,” Ms. Alvarenga said.

“I bought water, I bought a fan, everyone is crying and screaming, so you come on this stage!” Mrs. Alvarenga said.

As the crowd left the stadium, there were reports of unrest related to gang activity near the venue, a military police official said Saturday evening.

After Matheus Duarte, 24, a warehouse worker, left the stadium and went to a nearby shopping center, he saw people shouting that there was a raid.

“I don’t really know if it really happened, but I saw desperate people running,” Mr Duarte said. “And as soon as I saw it, I started running and hid in a parking lot.”

On Sunday, military police said there had been no reports of robberies or robberies the night before. But before the concert on Sunday, a fan was stabbed to death in Rio de Janeiro before the concert after an attempted robbery in Copacabana, the city’s famous beach strip, military police said. Two men have been arrested, they said.

During Friday’s show, Ana Clara Benevides, 23, died after losing consciousness, officials said. She was pronounced dead of cardiac arrest after being taken to a hospital hospital, according to city officials and the Brazilian company that organized Ms. Swift’s show, Time for Fun.

Ms. Benevides, a psychology student, had traveled from Rondonópolis, about 900 miles northwest of Rio de Janeiro, for the concert. O Globo reported. Her friend Emiliane Félix, 22, told O Globo that Ms Benevides had been sending her friends photos of her outfits for the concert “for more than a month”.

On X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, Ms. Benevides shared and wrote about her excitement about the concert November 7th “I don’t know what my purpose in life will be after seeing Taylor.”

Fans complained about a lack of water and extreme heat at the concert on Friday. The heat index, a measure of how warm the air feels due to humidity, reached 139 degrees Fahrenheit, a record for Rio.

In an online post, Ms Swift said she was “devastated” by her fan’s death. “I won’t be able to talk about this from the stage because I feel overwhelmed with sadness if I even try to talk about it,” she said.

Luiza Guimarães, 33, an economist, said she was disappointed it took so long for Saturday’s show to be canceled because some fans were already unsure whether the show would go ahead after Ms. Benevides’ death and were concerned about the heat. “Really, the production of the show was very reckless and everything was very poorly managed,” she said.

Ms. Guimarães said she did not blame Ms. Swift for the problems and that she thought the musician must be “very, very discouraged.”
