Taylor Swift sent Kelly Clarkson flowers after ‘1989’ re-recording

Kelly Clarkson know that it’s nice to have a friend like that Taylor Swift.

“She just sent me flowers,” Clarkson, 41, said. E! News in an interview published on Thursday, November 9. “She’s so nice. She did. She said, ‘Every time I put something out’ – because that’s just what she did 1989. I also have that really cute cardigan.”

Swift’s kind gesture is likely a thank you of sorts. In 2019, Swift’s masters were infamously sold to Scooter from Braun media company Ithaca Holdings, by the singer’s former label Big Machine Records for $300 million. The deal made Braun, 42, the owner of Swift’s first six albums with Big Machine Records: her self-titled debut, Fearless, Speak Now, Red, 1989 And Reputation. (They were later sold to Shamrock Holdings.)

At the time, Swift publicly condemned the sale, claiming that she had been asking to buy her masters for years but was not given the opportunity. After news of Braun’s sale made headlines, it was Clarkson who took to social media to suggest how Swift could take her music back.

“Just a thought, you should go in and re-record all the songs you don’t own the masters of, exactly the way you did them, but put brand new art and some kind of incentive in them so fans no longer have the old versions will buy,” they wrote via X (formerly Twitter) in July 2019. “I would buy all new versions just to prove my point.”

Four months later, Swift revealed her plans to re-release her music and has since released four of six albums: Fwithout ears (Taylor’s version), Red (Taylor’s version), And Speak Now (Taylor’s Version)fell in April 2021, October 2021 and July 2023 respectively, while 1989 (Taylor’s version) hit the shelves last month.

While you’re talking to E! On Thursday, Clarkson praised Swift’s kindness and intelligence and claimed the Grammy winner might have come up with the idea to re-record on her own.

“She is a very smart businesswoman. So she would have thought about that,” Clarkson said. “But it just sucks when you see artists that you admire and respect really want something and that’s special to them. You know if they find a loophole, you’ll find a loophole. And she did it and is literally the best-selling artist of all time that I feel like.

Clarkson also raved about Swift’s fanbase – known as Swifties – who got behind the project to support her. “She’s known for being an incredible songwriter and the soundtrack to a lot of people’s lives, and that’s her life,” she continued. “So you should have the ability to own that.”

Swift’s re-recordings have certainly seen their fair share of success. She earned the biggest sales week of her career after the release of 1989 (Taylor’s version)which earned 1.653 million equivalent album units in the United States according to its debut week Billboardand 3.5 million worldwide, according to her label, Republic Records. 1989 (Taylor’s version) is also Swift’s thirteenth No. 1 album and her sixth with over one million sales in a single week.

In addition to re-recording her music, Swift has also been busy selling out stadiums for her Eras tour, which started its international leg in Argentina on Thursday. Meanwhile, sales of her concert film, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tourshot her to billionaire status, according to A Bloomberg News analysis last month.
