As she slowly made her way down the slipway to Belfast's River Lagan, the RMS Titanic was described as the most luxurious way to cross the Atlantic.

Departing from Southampton on her maiden voyage to New York City in April 1912, some of the elites of American and British society were on board. Among them was John Jacob Astor, the richest man to travel on the Titanic.

Today's super-rich would not tolerate the use of a passenger service. Today's superyachts have some of the luxury amenities found on board the Titanic, such as a swimming pool or sauna.

At 269 meters in length, the Titanic was far larger than any modern superyacht, although these floating luxury palaces were only designed to carry a fraction of the passengers and crew.

At a price of $7.5 million, she was one of the most expensive ships of all time – worth almost $200 million today. Today's multi-billionaires spend much more to support themselves and their closest friends and associates.

Those who have spent more than $500 million on their yacht must set aside approximately 10 percent of the construction price to operate their vessel.

However, on some yachts with larger crew numbers the 10 per cent figure could rise dramatically, to more than £100 million per year.

While sailing, the largest superyachts use at least 500 liters of diesel per hour. The average tank capacity of a family car is between 50 and 80 litres.

Of the top ten superyachts, eight have been built since 2002 and have a length of at least 146.3 meters.

One is made in Britain, another in the UAE, one is from Denmark and the rest are from Denmark.
