After making his Bachelor Nation debut during the battle for Charity Lawson‘s heart during season 20 of The bachelorette, Joey became a fan favorite. During the finale, which aired in August 2023, Charity accepted a proposal from Dotun Olubeko. Despite his heartbreak, finishing the season in second place offered Joey the opportunity to become the Bachelor.

“[It’s] certainly surreal. It’s sinking in very slowly, but I’m doing my best to stay present and enjoy it,” Joey said after being announced as the franchise’s next lead. “But it’s crazy. I’ll be the first to say it. I never expected this at all. [I] Little did I know this was what my life turned into. Crazy stuff! … I put [looking for The One on] put on the back burner for a while, [but] I’m ready to prioritize it again.”

“I am looking for my person. I know for me, especially as I’ve gotten older, there is no type. It’s more about a personality and a type of person,” Joey said on the website Podcast ‘Bachelor Happy Hour’ in August 2023. “I just need someone who is willing to be open to facing life with me. I want someone adventurous. I want someone who will love me every day and who will try to make the best of it.”

Joey noted that he doesn’t know exactly “what that looks like,” but he hopes he’ll just “know” when he finds his perfect match. “I’m just really excited about the idea that I can actually find that person,” he said.
