Jamaica gets an unexpected draw with France.

Despite a successful run in the international game in recent years, France has been in turmoil behind the scenes. In March, the French federation fired its longtime coach, Corinne Diacre, after players complained about a unhealthy atmosphere in the team.

Hervé Renard, a coach well traveled but one who had never managed a women’s team before, has worked to keep the ship stable.

But Jamaica, a team playing in the World Cup for the second time, quelled that run on Sunday to earn its first-ever point in the standings with an improbable draw against France, 0-0. Jamaica had to use crowdfunding websites to raise money for the team’s trip to Australia and New Zealand, losing all three group stage matches in 2019.
