Trump Approved the CIA’s Brazen ‘Ghost Hunter’ Plot to Go Behind Enemy Lines in China and Sow CHAOS with Mass Brainwashing
The CIA launched a brazen plot to undermine Chinese despot Xi Jinping by using social media to spread chaos in Beijing, it has been claimed.
Donald Trump supported the ‘ghost hunting’ initiative to sow paranoia among citizens and top officials in the hope of turning public opinion against China.
The special CIA task force is said to have leaked stories about Chinese leaders making money from contracts with foreign governments.
They also spread claims that top officials in Beijing were hiding their profits abroad, Reuters reports.
In early 2019, the US spy agency launched the Trump-approved plan in the hope of creating paranoia within the upper echelons of China’s ranks.
Former US officials with firsthand knowledge spoke to Reuters about the top-secret operation. One said: “We wanted them to chase ghosts”.
And another revealed: “The feeling was that China was coming at us with steel baseball bats and we were fighting back with wooden bats.”
Three ex-officials said the CIA had assembled a small team of operatives for the initiative, using fake internet identities to spread negative propaganda about Xi’s government.
They also leaked information to the foreign press, portraying China in a bad light.
The initiative was reportedly aimed at blunting China’s global influence, including when it came to US elections.
Trump’s presidency ended in 2020 when Democratic rival Joe Biden took over the White House.
But US intelligence agencies believe cyber hackers from world powers including China and Russia meddled in the first 2016 elections that brought him to power.
Despite his 2016 victory and a sometimes close alliance with Xi, Trump has taken a tougher approach to China during his term than many presidents who came before him.
In 2018, he even gave the CIA more power to conduct its own cyber operations abroad.
The idea was that they could act in retaliation for Chinese and Russian hacking attacks.
And in 2019, Trump endorsed the program that allowed American spies to conduct operations in China and other countries where the U.S. and Beijing compete for influence.
The thinking was mainly focused on countries in Southeast Asia, Africa and the South Pacific – focusing on China’s Belt and Road initiative.
China’s Belt and Road project is a global infrastructure plan that will expand Xi’s international influence and boost his economy.
And especially over the past decade, China has vastly expanded its military pacts, trade agreements, and business deals.
Some claims spread by the CIA on social media suggested that this scheme had been exploited specifically by corrupt Chinese officials to make money.
Reports on the CIA plan did not indicate how effective it was or details about the officials targeted.
The former US officials said the information they spread online was based on facts.
A spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry told Reuters that the bombshell reports show the US is using public opinion platforms as a weapon to spread false information and manipulate international public opinion.
It is unclear whether Biden has moved forward with the initiative.
Tensions between China and the US are escalating as the world finds itself in a moment of intense conflict.
Just a few days ago the US House of Representatives a landmark law passed Beijing-based company ByteDance, TikTok’s platform, has been given six months to sell the social media site or have it blocked completely.
The app’s parent company would have to find a non-Chinese buyer or face a ban in the United States.
Concerns about the Chinese social media app escalated among Western governments last year over its widespread data collection.
One expert even says Britain could follow America’s lead and try to ban the app for its 25 million users here.
