upload stars Robbie Amel And Andy Allo look back at how far the relationship between their characters has evolved over three seasons.

“Season 1, [Nathan and Nora] have a great relationship, but [Nora] goes home at the end of the day and it’s like dating someone but there’s no risk of you moving in together or spending too much time together,” Amell, 35, told exclusively We weekly as we discuss season 3 of the Prime Video series. “In season 2 you see us trying to get to the point [Nathan] downloads and then season 3, it’s almost like we’ve moved in together and we’re experiencing more of each other than ever before.

Amell noted that after a long three-season journey together, the fan-favorite couple is in a place where they can’t always be “perfect” with each other — but that’s not exactly a bad thing.

“It can be a little scary at first, but you also learn to love those things and see something even more in that other person,” he continued, noting that it is the show’s creator. Greg Daniels – and the rest of the writers room – we have to thank for building such grounded relationships in an otherwise offbeat comedy.

“They’re so good at finding it [moments] in a sci-fi satire,” he said. “They still find these real truthful moments between people and it makes our job a lot easier. So we can play.”

upload, which premiered in 2020, follows Nathan (Amell) in the afterlife as his consciousness is uploaded to a virtual world. As he adjusts to his new plane of existence, he befriends his angel (Nora) and the pair eventually fall in love.

Despite Nathan not being able to remember his relationship with Nora, there are clearly feelings between the pair – something Allo, 34, said was important for the characters to explore.

“New Nathan and I recognized that there will always be something, but he consciously chooses to be with Ingrid,” she said. Us. While she joked that Nathan’s “heart” will always be with Nora, she added that “old” Nathan’s “growth” is what makes their relationship so special.

“Yes, there is still a bit of it [Nathan] he wants his body fat to be a certain level and all that stuff – but it’s less about that,” she joked. “It’s less about the looks and more about what’s inside.”

In memory, only six months separate Nathan’s. Creating two unique characters from a series of clones can be a challenge for any actor, but the “incredible writing” made Amell’s job “easier” – even if filming scenes occasionally got “pretty wild.”

“We had an acting double come in and I read both sides to him to show him how I was going to say it,” Amell said. Us. “And then he read to the camera and then I changed clothes and put in earphones. And I didn’t do the dialogue for anyone, but I heard my old dialogue so I had time to go back and forth. from my own words. So it was really weird and I was like, ‘Well, I hope this works.’”

According to Amell, the process was “a lot of fun,” despite the challenges. That included Edwards, 36, who fell in love with the ‘new’ Nathan – while also reconnecting with her former flame.

“It had the feeling of being with an old friend, which I think in a way it was new for Allegra with Robbie, playing it together,” Edwards said of scenes between the ex-fiancées. “Ingrid and Nathan hadn’t had the deepest relationship up to that point, but it also felt different for both of them to be a little sloppy with each other, just physically and then emotionally.”
