Flight hell hits Australia again as Virgin Australia cancels five return flights as Sydney Airport crowds swell after days of chaos

  • Five Virgin flights from Sydney Airport cancelled

Virgin Australia has canceled five flights as passengers face travel delays and massive congestion at Sydney Airport for the sixth day in a row.

The airline canceled scheduled flights from Sydney Airport on Tuesday due to operational reasons.

Affected travelers were notified of the cancellations at 4am on Tuesday and were put on the next available flight.

Passengers can request a travel credit if the next available service is not an option for them.

“We apologize to anyone affected by delayed or canceled services and we continue to work hard to ensure our guests reach their destination,” a Virgin Australia spokesperson told Daily Mail Australia.

“We will continue to communicate with guests whose flight is disrupted and ensure they are accommodated on the next available services.”

Sydney Airport has since been overwhelmed with passengers trying to board a flight after several days of persistent cancellations and delays.

On Monday, 18 domestic flights landed at Sydney Airport – Melbourne, Canberra, Brisbane, Adelaide, Hobart, the Gold Coast and Griffith, among others, were all cancelled.

A further 13 scheduled flights from Sydney were cancelled, with destinations including Canberra, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Hobart and the Gold Coast affected.

An airport spokesperson said the cancellations are a knock-on effect of the weather-related disruptions that occurred over the weekend.

A severe shortage of air traffic controllers – due to staff illness in Brisbane – has also contributed to widespread chaos in flights along the country’s east coast since Thursday.

The ongoing outages coincide with the start of the NSW school holidays.

A distraught traveler burst into tears after arriving at the airport on Monday to learn her flight had been cancelled, throwing her holiday into disarray.

“I had a 7:30 am flight and my ticket now says it is 5:00 pm,” she told the ABC.

“I didn’t get an email or anything.

“I’m devastated, I’m sad, I want to travel and it’s not working out for me.

“I am very stressed right now and there is no solution. We’re all confused.’
