Delhi accident: A low-floor electric bus of Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) rammed into more than a dozen vehicles in Rohini South here on Saturday, killing a man, police said. Police further added that there was no passenger in the bus when the accident took place near Vishram Chowk in Awantika around 2.45 pm. The bus rammed into a car, then an e-rickshaw and two-wheelers parked on the side of the road.

Police said the bus driver, Sandeep Kumar, was detained from the spot. He told police he was suffering from a seizure due to epilepsy, a brain disease. Police have access to multiple CCTV footage of the accident, which shows the bus hitting vehicles one by one. Some parked two-wheelers were completely damaged under the bus.

One man died at the scene while another was injured, police said, adding that it appears the bus driver lost control of the vehicle. The deceased was yet to be identified but the injured, Ram Sharma, a resident of Rohini Sector 3, was admitted to hospital.

Sharma suffered head injuries. After dropping off passengers in Rohini, Kumar was on his way to the depot when the accident occurred, police said. “He told us he suffered from epilepsy. We have conducted his medical examination,” said a police officer.

Meanwhile, the Delhi government’s Transport Department termed the incident “unfortunate” in a statement. The Delhi government stands firmly with the grieving family, the report said.

“The driver suddenly became unconscious, lost control of the bus and crashed into the vehicles parked on the left on the road. The PCR was called by the conductor and helped police take the injured to hospital for medical treatment,” the statement said.

A senior officer arrived at the scene and also visited the Dr. BR Ambedkar Hospital to inquire about the injured, the report said.

“As far as machine breakdowns are concerned, the Delhi government has a set of standard operating procedures to ensure safe and hassle-free travel in the city,” the Transport Ministry said.

Police believe this is the first fatal accident involving the low-floor electric DTC bus since its introduction into the public transport fleet.

The bus driver’s statement was recorded to confirm the sequence of events, police said. They said local intelligence assistance has been sought to identify the deceased.

At the time of the accident, the victim, believed to be a ragpicker, was crossing the road, police said. A case has been registered at Rohini South police station and further investigation is underway, they added.
