Where in Europe the world wants to go most – and it’s Santorini in Greece that’s number 1
A fascinating reworked world map reveals the European holiday destinations that are the most popular globally – and it’s the Greek island of Santorini that is number 1, followed by the Mediterranean island of Ibiza in second place and Spain’s Canary Island of Tenerife in third place.
On the map – generated using Google search data – country names have been supplemented with the most searched European holiday destinations by their inhabitants. Researchers studied Google data in 185 countries over the past 12 months to find out which EU holiday destinations are most frequently Googled using terms such as ‘destination + holiday’ or ‘destination + holiday’.
Santorini tops the list generated by CV Villas thanks to being the most popular European spot in 47 countries around the world, including the US, Finland, Colombia, Bolivia, India, Australia and New Zealand.
CV Villas says, ‘Famous for its golden sunsets, warm temperatures and breathtaking landscapes, it’s no surprise that Santorini ranks so highly as a must-visit hotspot.’
Ibiza comes in second as a total of 29 countries – including Brazil, Argentina, Chile, Kenya, Mexico, Jamaica and Portugal – seem to be looking for a vacation over any other European destination.

CV Villas says, ‘Ibiza has long been a popular tourist destination thanks to its scorching summer weather, exotic landscape and beautiful beaches.’
Tenerife, which ranks third, is described by CV Villas as ‘plenty for tourists to explore, including the infamous volcano Teide’. From there you have an ‘incredible’ view of the island, the largest of the Canary Islands.
CV Villas add that Tenerife is a top winter holiday destination, with temperatures averaging 20C in the colder months.
The Spanish spot is the number 1 European holiday destination for 12 European countries, including Spain, the UK, Germany and Belgium.

Sicily, above, is fourth in the ranking generated by researchers who have studied Google search data for vacations in 185 countries over the past 12 months
Rounding out the top five are the Italian island of Sicily in fourth place and Corfu in Greece in fifth place.
Moving further into the top 10, Greece continues its winning streak with destinations such as Kos, Mykonos and Crete all making the list of most searched European holiday destinations.
CV Villas also produced a series of regional maps to more clearly show the breakdown of results around the world.
A separate map for the US shows how Sicily is the most popular European destination in 29 states, Santorini tops in 16 and Tuscany tops in four states.
