Who is Valdo Calocane?

Valdo Calocane is an ex-University of Nottingham student, 32, who graduated in 2022 with a degree in mechanical engineering.

His former roommates called him 'serial killer'after putting one of them in a headlock after being asked to pick up their dirty laundry.

Nottingham Crown Court was told that Calocane was suffering from an 'extreme' mental illness at the time, including paranoid schizophrenia.

He now risks an indefinite TBS measure or a prison sentence after pleading guilty to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility.

On January 23, 2024, prosecutors accepted his plea – meaning Calocane will not stand trial for murder.

Prosecutor Karim Khalil KC told Nottingham Crown Court: “The plea to each offense of manslaughter is based on diminished responsibility due to the medical condition of paranoid schizophrenia.

In each of the three murders, his victim was brutally stabbed multiple times

Valdo now faces a sentencing hearing expected to last two days.

Tragedy hit first around 4 a.m. on Tuesday, June 13, 2023, with Calocane arrested on suspicion of murder in the hours that followed.

He was admitted Police custody less than two hours after the stabbing.

It is believed to be of Calocane origin West Africa and is not British.

But he is a legal resident of Britain and has lived here since he was a teenager. The Times reported this.

Valdo has no criminal record, but would have been on the radar MI5 after knocking on their door to ask for help.

Who are the victims of the Nottingham attack?

Barnaby Webber, Grace O'Malley-Kumar and Ian Coates were named as the victims.

university students Grace and Barnabyboth 19, were the first two victims named.

The pair were on their way home student housing of a nightclub on the morning they died.

The teenagers were said to have been just five minutes from home when the horror unfolded.

Barnaby was an enthusiast cricketerand his family called him “beautiful, brilliant and smart”.

Grace was one rising English hockey starand had risen through London's Southgate Hockey Club.

Ian, a school caretaker, was mentioned day after he was killed.

The director where Ian worked called him “a much-loved colleague who always went the extra mile for the benefit of our children”.

What happened in the Nottingham attacks?

Police rushed to Ilkeston Road just after 4am on June 13, 2023, after witnesses revealed they had heard “blood-curdling screams“.

Bystanders described the horror moment they claim they saw the stabbing unfold before police stormed the scene.

It was believed that this was when Grace and Barnaby were murdered.

Police were then called to Milton Street, where the The stolen van was used to run over three people – one man is in critical condition, while two others suffer minor injuries.

Detectives – included terror police – believe Valdo stole the van from nearby Magdala Road, where he murdered the vehicle's owner.

This is where Ian is believed to have been stabbed to death.

CCTV footage showed a man trying to break into a homeless shelter at 4.08am.

He was knocked away by one of the home's residents, Trevor Proverb, 59.

Valdo was eventually arrested around 5:30 a.m. after being tasered by police.
