Police in Kansas City, Missouri have revealed further details about the Wednesday, February 14, shooting during the Kansas City Chiefs' Super Bowl parade.
One person was killed and nine more were injured, police said ABC news.
The Chiefs football team paraded through downtown KC on Wednesday to celebrate their Super Bowl LVIII victory. Amid the fanfare, with speeches from Coach Andy Reidquarterback Patrick Mahomestight end Travis Kelce and more, it was reported by police that there were “shots fired [had] fired around Union Station.”
Law enforcement officials noted that shots were fired “west of Union Station” and that “several people were affected.” Two armed attackers were taken into custody as police launched an investigation.
“Agents are in the process of clearing Union Station itself. We will release everyone in the building once that is complete,” said a police statement via X. “We are still trying to determine the number of victims in the shooting. … Everyone in the area should leave the area as quickly and safely as possible to facilitate the treatment of the shooting victims. Please avoid the Union Station parking garage to allow first responders to pass.”
Additional attendees immediately fled the scene due to safety concerns.
“We were getting ready to leave, the meeting had just ended and we were walking back to… where we came from to look for an Uber when we heard screaming,” the visitor said. Dana Bradywho brought her daughter, said a news reporter for the Kansas City star on Wednesday. “There were all these people crying and running towards us. So I just put my arms around my daughter and we made our way through the crowd.”
Brady recalled attendees helping each other climb over the barricades, which were placed during the event to control the crowd.
Both the governors of Missouri and Kansas attended the parade.
“At the end of the Chiefs meeting, shots were fired near Union Station. I have been evacuated and am out of danger.” Laura Kelly the governor of Kansas, wrote in an X statement. “I encourage everyone to follow instructions and updates from @kcpolice. Please stay safe.”
The Governor of Missouri, Mike Parsonattended with his wife and noted that the pair are “safe and secure.”
“While we wait to learn more, our thoughts go out to the victims,” the statement said X.
