New Delhi: At least 19 workers suffered serious injuries on Tuesday after a dangerous gas leaked at the Tata Steel plant at Meramandali in Odisha’s Dhenkanal district, Argus News reported. The injured were rushed to a nearby hospital.

The incident occurred after a steam pipe burst due to gas leakage, OdishaBytes reported citing sources. Those workers and engineers, who were inspecting the blast furnace, were injured after hot water fell on them, the report said. The condition of two people is said to be critical.

“Around 19 persons were injured when the hot water valve was opened,” Dhenkanal SP Gyanaranjan Mohapatra told media, adding that a team from the district administration will also visit the site for an investigation.

“We are saddened to report an accident at BFPP2 power plant due to steam escape at Tata Steel Meramandali Works in Dhenkanal, Odisha. The accident occurred at 1pm today during inspection work and affected some people working at the site. , in the company’s ambulance, accompanied by doctor and paramedics,” Tata Steel said in a statement.

“After the accident, all emergency protocol services were activated and the area was cordoned off. The company is providing all necessary information and support to the families of the affected personnel. We are working closely with the relevant authorities on the ground and have launched an internal investigation to determine the cause of the accident. Safety remains our top priority and we are determined to learn from this incident. We will share updates as more details become available,” the statement said.
