The fire broke out at 6:50 a.m. at the four-story Yongju Coal Industry Joint Building in Shanxi’s main coal-producing center.

The investigation into the cause of the fire was still ongoing.

The recent fire incident in particular has sparked public outrage in the neighboring country. In April, a fire engulfed a hospital in Beijing, killing 29 and prompting criticism of local authorities on social media.

China’s coal producers are under scrutiny following a series of recent mine accidents. This has affected production as mines suspend operations due to safety inspections.
