All-white board at one of Britain’s wealthiest charities quits after race review leads to new diversity drive

The whole white plate in one of the richest charities in Great Britain stopped after an anti-racism diversity drive.

The board of the Tudor Trust, which has £ 288 million assets, was previously dominated by descendants of the founder – Sir Godfrey Mitchell.

However, the members have now been replaced by eight new managers – of whom only one is white, has been reported.

Mitchell's grandson Christopher Graves, who was executive director and worked for 38 years at the charity, has been replaced by a black woman.

Other family managers who have fallen are chairman Matthew Dunwell and his brother Benjamin.

Dunwell, 61, who is also one of Mitchell's descendants, said he hoped that his decision would inspire other family rests to do the same, the Times reported.

He wrote in his final report as chairman: 'Letting go of Power is a messy company, and there is no perfect time or way to do this.

'The role of long -term family involvement in philanthropy or family rests has been rightly examined, in particular in the last five years.

'I hope we have shown at Tudor that changes in long -term ways of working are possible.

The organization, which gives charities about £ 20 million a year, was founded in 1955 by a legacy of Sir Godfrey, founder of building Reus George Wimpey.

In 2023, however, the organization noticed as 'white and privileged' and was accused of undergoing awake make -over.

The charity stopped all subsidies for 20 months, while it 'recaptured' his future and heard the staff about 'racial justice' and 'white supremacy culture'.

It previously supported a wide range of around 500 charities and the decision forced much smaller organizations to look for financing elsewhere.

The forum of Bristol Ouder People received a £ 3,000 subsidy to go to Platform 60, a national website for the elderly who will be launched soon.

“It was really useful to get the subsidy,” a spokesperson said earlier. “It was just a small amount of money, but we still wanted to get a small amount to continue the development of the project.”

However, the Tudor Trust changes meant that they had to rely on a national lottery fair and volunteers who gave time free to complete the work.

Another charity that helps children in northwestern England, but asked not to be mentioned, said that the funds of the Tudor Trust were a 'lifeline' and that they would have applied for subsidies in the future, but that is now uncertain.

The organization now asks groups to request financing and does not accept unsolicited applications.

This week, the Tudor Trust announced its first subsidies since the Freeze 2023 – £ 9.3 million in financing for 11 groups.

Among those who receive the funds, the Black Feminist Fund, the Good Ancestor Movement and the Ubele initiative that supports the African diaspora.

Raji Hunjan, the new Chief Executive said: “This marks a decisive moment for the Tudor Trust with racial justice that is now embedded as the lens, which means we tackle all forms of injustice.”

A statement from the Tudor Trust was previously: 'We acknowledge that we live in a society that is formed by white privilege and racism.

'We also acknowledge that being a family business has given rise to a trustee board that is almost completely white and privileged.

“Although the profile of confidence staff is more diverse, we acknowledge that most of us throughout the organization have no experience with what it means to be discriminated against because of our color.”

MailOnline has contacted the organization for more comments.
