NYT Connections Today (Contest #431) – The Answers
The answers to today’s Connections game, #431, are…
- YELLOW: WIDTH SCOPE, RANGE, RANGE, SCOPE
- GREEN: OTHER HALF COMPLEMENT, MATCH, SIZE, PARTNER
- BLUE: BEERS, FAMILY BUD, NATTY, SIERRA, STELLA
- PURPLE: WORDS AFTER “PAY” CONTROL, DIRTY, FRIEND, PHONE
- My rating: Moderate
- My score: 1 error
Deception is a constant threat in Connections, which is one reason I always shuffle the answers when I start the game. The NYT often puts words together at the beginning so they seem like they belong together, but they don’t.
Today I guessed MATE, BUD, PAL, PARTNER as a group and was quite shocked when they didn’t form one answer. But coincidentally MATE and PARTNER were in the ‘Other half’ group instead (with COMPLEMENT and MATCH), while BUD went into ‘Beers’ and PAL went into the final ‘Words after “Pay”‘ group.
Still, you’re allowed three mistakes in Connections (the fourth is a loss), so I still had plenty of guesses left to solve this relatively tricky part of the game. I don’t think I would have gotten the blue group if it hadn’t been standard – I’ve never heard of NATTY or SIERRA as beers – but the purple wasn’t as bad as it sometimes is, so I got there eventually.
How was your day? Send me an email and let me know.

What is NYT Connections?
NYT Connections is one of the increasingly popular word games from the New York Times. It challenges you to find groups of four items that have something in common, and each group has a different difficulty level: green is easy, yellow a bit harder, blue is often quite difficult, and purple is usually very difficult.
On the plus side, you don’t technically have to solve the last question, because you can answer it by elimination. Plus, you can make a maximum of four mistakes, which gives you some breathing room.
It is a bit more complicated than something like Wordle, however, and there are plenty of opportunities for the game to trip you up with tricks. For example, watch out for homophones and other wordplay that can obscure the answers.
It is free to play via the NYT Games site on desktop or mobile.
