The bears Ayo Edebiri isn’t actually Irish, but many fans think she still is because of a running joke.

In March 2022, Edebiri, 28, joked that she was living in Ireland to prepare for her role as “Jenny the Donkey” in The Banshees of InisherinHowever, the role never existed.

“I lived in Ireland for about four months and I really got into character and I was on my hands and knees for four months and it was really painful, but also beautiful,” the actress explained in an red carpet interview with Letterboxd while feigning an Irish accent. “And it was probably the most satisfying part of my career and I’m so happy that everyone’s going to the Oscars, even though I deserved the nomination more than anyone else because I was obviously an ass for four months.”

Since the interview, Edebiri has continued with the joke, with fans joining in as well.

Following the announcement that Edebiri had been nominated for the 2024 BAFTA Rising Star Award, the X bill, Film in Dublincongratulated the actress and called her ‘own Ireland’.

Thanking Ireland at Critics Choice Awards

On January 14, 2024, Edebiri took home the award for Best Actress in a Comedy Series for her role in The bear. The actress nodded slightly to Ireland in her acceptance speech.

“I want to thank my real family, I don’t know if they have CW abroad,” she said. “To everyone in Boston, Barbados, Nigeria, Ireland, in many ways. Thank you so much, I love you all.”

On January 15, 2024, Edebiri kept the joke going as she showered her love on Ireland while walking the red carpet at the Emmy Awards, where she won Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her role in The bear.

“Shout-out to my people! Shout-out to Derry! Shout-out to Cork! Shout out to Killarney! Shout-out to Dublin!” Edebiri said as he spoke to Entertainment tonight at the pre-show.

Edebiri added that she appreciates Dublin City messaging her on X (formerly Twitter) despite no longer having the social media platform. “I am generally aware of my connection with Ireland. I am aware of it,” she said.

A subtle ‘SNL’ shout-out

While hosting Saturday Night Live on February 3, 2024, Edebiri wore a white T-shirt that read “Ayo” above a four-leaf clover as she musical guest introduced Jennifer Lopez.
