BBC iPlayer Downloads allows viewers to save their favorite programs to machines so they can watch them later without an internet or Wi-Fi connection.

The feature was especially useful for those traveling abroad with their laptops, as BBC iPlayer is not accessible in other countries.

BBC bosses said they had “made the difficult decision” to close the app due to “the low number of people using it and the costs required to keep it running”.

The measure will not affect downloads on BBC iPlayer’s mobile or tablet apps – and people can continue to stream programs on BBC iPlayer from their PC and Mac devices as normal.

Users condemned the decision when it was announced last month.

“I do NOT want to stare at a small mobile screen with poor sound quality to watch a movie/drama/nature show etc originally produced in HD,” said one.

“What BBC idiot or incompetent committee made this decision? With this withdrawal of features in mind I will certainly support any move to reject an increase in the BBC’s licensing fees.”

Another wrote: ‘What kind of people does the BBC employ to come up with this idiocy?

“Have they actually tried to watch shows on a phone screen or have they looked at those of us who don’t even have a smartphone or tablet?”

The app has already been retired, so new users cannot download it.

From Monday, March 11, anyone who already has the app will no longer be able to download programs on it.

And on April 8, the app will be closed completely.
