During Biden’s speech, he asked the graduating students, “What is democracy if you have to be ten times better than anyone else to get a fair chance?”

Discussing Biden’s speech, the comedian said, “One of the more controversial things [Biden] the graduating students were told that you have to be ten times as good to have a fair chance in America.’

Charlamange, who recently announced he would not support Biden for president in 2024, nodded.

Maher then invoked the responses of two prominent black intellectuals — Glenn Loury, an economist, and John McWhorter, a linguist — to Biden’s comment.

The comedian looked at his notes and read the economist’s comments: ‘Loury said, “I thought this was the kind of speech you would have given in 1974, maybe in 1984, but not in 2024.”

Maher then read a statement from McWhorter: “Can we for heaven’s sake admit that time is passing? I remember my mother saying that in the 1970s, when it still made some sense. It’s just not true anymore, and we should celebrate that.”

Maher and Charlamange argued after Maher brought up Biden's speech at HBCU Morehouse College, where the president said graduating students would have to work ten times as hard to succeed in America.

The television host then asked Charlamange, who two months ago dismissed DEI programs as “mostly garbage,” whether he agreed with Biden.

“I don’t know if it’s ten times better, but maybe five,” the radio personality responded.

Maher said, visibly irritated, “Come on…you think you have to be five times [better]?’

“Yes, if you’re black in America, absolutely,” Charlamange insisted.

‘In 2024?’ the comedian reacted in shock.

“If you’re black in America, if you’re a woman in America, if you’re a black woman in America, absolutely.”

Frustrated by Charlamange’s attitude, Maher snapped, “I think this is a zombie lie.”

‘Why?’ asked the host of The Breakfast Club.

“Because I don’t think that’s America anymore,” the comedian joked.

The heated argument between the two personalities took place during an episode of Maher’s HBO show, Real Time with Bill Maher.

In addition to Charlamange Tha God, Maher was joined for Friday’s episode by political strategist Ana Navarro and journalist Joel Stein.

At one point in the show, the comedian made a dire prediction for Democrats, predicting that they would lose in November if they went ahead with the election. continue their current immigration policies.

Maher was pessimistic about President Joe Biden’s re-election chances due to the perception of his age the millions of illegal immigrants crossing the border.

Maher compared last week’s European Union elections, where far-right parties made huge gains, to the upcoming US elections on November 5.

Immigration was not the only reason for the swing to the right, especially in Germany, France, Spain, Poland and Italy, but it was a key campaign issue.

“European Parliament voters once again said we don’t like so much immigration,” Maher said on his show.

Maher noted that Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni was often called a fascist due to some of her far-right views, but he argued that moderate parties enabled her to do so.

“If liberals insist that enforcing borders is a job only fascists can do, then voters will hire fascists to do what liberals don’t want to do,” he said, quoting a 2019 article in The Atlantic Ocean.

“Voters keep saying over and over again that we are not comfortable with this level of immigration. I understand why. Saying that doesn’t make you a racist.’

Maher did not specify why voters were uncomfortable with immigration, other than to say it was not solely due to racism.

He argued that the problem Democrats had with the issue was summed up in Senator Alex Padilla’s response to Biden’s executive order restricting border crossings.

“By reviving Trump’s asylum ban, Biden has undermined American values,” he quoted the California lawmaker as saying.

“And then they all step back and say, ‘We don’t want to be called racist. So we won’t take action on immigration.’

Maher argued This was exactly the wrong response, because it misjudged the current mood of American voters.

“It’ll confuse them on Election Day. It’s happening in Europe right now. It’s proving that in Europe, and it’s going to happen here in America.” he said.

‘It happened with Brexit. It’s going to happen again.’

Brexit, in which Britain voted to leave the European Union, was fought on many fronts, but easier migration from Europe to Britain was a factor.

One of Maher’s guests, Joel Stein, pushed back, arguing that there was a “real moral reason” to admit asylum seekers.

“On any number?” Maher asked, to which Stein agreed that it couldn’t be infinite. But that’s their point!’ Maher exclaimed in response.

Maher then cited a poll in which 64 percent of Hispanics said they supported giving the president the authority to close the border.

Another 64 percent of all registered voters would immediately deport all immigrants.”living in the US illegally‘.

“Yes, people hate immigrants,” Stein said of the survey results, but Maher insisted that wasn’t true — at least not as a sweeping generalization.

Biden’s executive order would halt asylum applications when the average daily number of arrivals reaches 2,500, and keep it closed until dropped to 1,500.

There are concerns that Biden’s order will not be legally valid because stopping asylum seekers would violate international treaties or exceed presidential authority, which is what the poll was about.

Seeking asylum at the border, as the vast majority of recent influxes of immigrants are doing, is not illegal, but sneaking in without seeking asylum is.

Maher made a similar warning on his show last week, when he called Biden’s last-minute executive order a “Hail Mary” that wouldn’t work.

“If Biden loses this election, it will be because of two things: he’s old… and immigration,” he said.

“I mean, just on a political level, I don’t think they could have done a worse job.”
