Huge blaze engulfs London recycling centre with 70 firefighters scrambled to tackle inferno – as locals are warned to stay inside their homes

A massive fire has engulfed a major waste recycling center in the north London with dozens of firefighters rushing to tackle the inferno.

About 500 tonnes of mixed waste caught fire early this morning on Nobel Road, Edmonton.

The London Fire Brigade said 10 fire engines and around 70 firefighters had been dispatched to help control the inferno.

Huge plumes of black smoke were sent high into the sky. One person posted a dramatic video of a large column of smoke coming from the North Circular.

Residents in the area have been advised to keep doors and windows closed due to the huge amounts of smoke being released.

Firefighters used one of the brigade’s 32-metre ladders to battle the fire from above. The brigade’s drone team was also deployed to the incident and provided the incident commander with an aerial view of the scene. Crews also used a nearby creek as a water source and supplied additional water to fire trucks as they responded.

Nobel Road remains closed between Thornton Road and Kynoch Road, with traffic along the A1055 affected while we remain on site.

The brigade was first called about the incident at 3.33am and the fire was under control by 7.51am. Crews from Edmonton, Enfield, Chingford and surrounding fire stations responded to the scene.

The cause of the fire is not yet known.
